I’m concerned if she still has N’zoth hat on her head…like technically, is that a piece of N’zoth? Well I guess her whole body is kinda linked to N’zoth considering how he made it to reborn her as a naga. I’m pointing out cos I have this inkling that Blizz would do a surprise return or body-takeover thing with N’zoth. I still refuse to believe he knew and started the quest line of getting Xal out of the blade, then tortured Azshara but let her keep the blade in her pocket somewhere, which she then conveniently passed to the player; all this without some plan to use the blade (which we don’t know where it is) to do something.
So my theory of why she needs the Darkheart: The Darkheart absorbs arcane energy and stores it. The arcane is the magic of the titans. My guess is that the Titans have injected Azeroth with arcane to counteract the void in her. She is going to use the darkheart to suck the arcane out of Azeroth and allow the void to overpower her.

I've been thinking it would be cool if it turned out that Xalatath is a sort of evil rebel who stole power from perhaps the old gods. Old gods don't like that, and have been hunting her. Now that her cards are on the table, they know where she is and send their most powerful minion, Azshara, to get Xalatath. Obs Azshara wins bc although Xal is cool, ultimately she is 'we have Azshara at home', and I bet a bit of an Albatross for the story team that just needs to be dealt with in a way players approve of. Then if Midnight+ was meant to be a story largely about Xalatath, it could just be about Azshara instead, which I think would be a win.
Tbh that would be kinda boring imo. Shes not that scary of a bad guy and shes already been proven to be “weaker” than other villains. We need a new baddie, whos truly terrifying. Perhaps A lovecraftian void lord with terrible and yet still understandable motivations.
I think that would be lame. But your excitement over them meeting is shared by me. It could be a cool dynamic. The two are extremely powerful and very similarly cunning and ruthless.

It absorbs all types of magic, and converts it to shadow
I presume to flip the sunwell to void and summon azshara and void lords etc
