I legit spent hours doing updates, patches, trying tutorials to get LotRO to play on my new laptop... and finally found your video. Yours is the ONLY tutorial that has solved all of my issues...thank you EVER so much for the play-by-play tutorial. :) ~Shande
Thank You THIS was an awesome detailed guide that actually WORKED for me! Been struggling with this for days so I was so relieved to find your video 👍👍👍
Great guide! Here is another tip for those like me who got an error when the launcher was attempting to install DirectX9 when you already have the correct .dll files installed on your computer: Just delete the files listed in the error message, and the launcher will successfully download those files. In my case it was the files d3dx9_42.dll, d3dx10_42.dll and d3dx11_42.dll located in the SysWOW64 and System32 folders inside the main Windows folder. Now I can finally play with DX11 enabled :)
Man, my sides went into orbit after reading "LotRO Tech Tips". I deleted LoTRO after realizing it required me to change a text file and other stuff to run on a modern system. I'm not completely alien to config files and such, but I find this kind of lack care by the developers absurd. But I may give it another try. I'm in the middle of "The Two Towers" book right now and I'd like to play as I read.
my monitor( 2k ultra wide 175 hz( game mode) ) does not support lotr, my whole screen goes blue and discconects with the pc, it says: this mode is not supported, the resolution is not supported
Thanks for the great guide. Unfortunately my game still crashed after following the steps in your video. The thing that eventually fixed the problem was to change the value of "DisplayAdapter=0" to 1 in the "UserPreferences.ini" file, found in "documents/the lord of the rings". Nothing else would let me change any graphics settings and DX9 would be greyed out. After changing this value, I could change to DX11 and adjust my resolution without the game crashing.

I'm still running into the same issue of having only a DirectX 9 option for graphics. DX11 isn't available regardless of the multiple troubleshoots I've seen in the forums, like the Display Adapter change, etc. I have a new build, Windows 11 with a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 GPU. After installing, then uninstalling and reinstalling, I'm simply not getting this fixed. In my Preferences, I have this showing: D3DVersionPromptedForAtStartup=11 so I'm assuming it THINKS I'm running DX11. The dropdown menu on the launcher under Repair shows the Display Adapter in use as the 3060. Advice appreciated because I'm six hours into this one problem and getting frustrated.
Hello, I need help! I've done all the steps carefully and the game doesn't detect the directX, the message at minute 23:44 doesn't pop... Any idea? I really want to play this game.. Thank you so much.
Try opening Documents\The Lord of the Rings Online\UserPreferences.ini in notepad and changing DisplayAdapter=0 to DisplayAdapter=1 or vice-versa. I used to recommend this in edge cases on the forums long ago but it seems like it's becoming more necessary lately.
A question for you my friend, If i already had Lotro installed prior to this, would simply using the repair tool work in the place of a full reinstall? also, would this fix the issue of the game crashing because it can't find and initialize your direct x?
Hey buddy i need uh help i actually download the game from steam and got run for 15 mins then a glitch happened and now on reinstall its getting procduct check as failed

I can't say for sure! So my recommendation is nearly always: When in doubt, go the extra mile and reinstall from scratch. Sorry!
