This is all true, but somehow i think saving 3 $ on coffee you are going to spend it on something else. I am working 8/7 and still my money goes for rent, food, family. Sometimes cooking in home is more expensive than eating in restourant. Also i think this depends on the country you are living, but yeah your point is spot on.

Absolutely loved this video Matti! There is so much valuable information here and I'm sure everybody appreciates you sharing wisdom you've gained through your own personal life experiences. Although I am only 24 years old, I would love to contribute to your message and share a few strategies that I have picked up over the last few years being a young entrepreneur:
    1. I never buy things I can't afford. As obvious as it sounds, I make a point of never swiping my credit card to buy something I don't have enough money for. If I can't pay for it in cash (if I wanted to), I don't buy it. Having any debt, and paying interest (even if it's small) can lead to huge sets backs in the future and you can end up playing a game of catch-up for years trying to pay those debts as they accumulate. If you have debt, your priority should be paying it off, before you spend money on things you don't technically "need".
    2. If you can't afford to buy certain gear, rent it. Instead of buying that $2000 lens or $1000 light, rent gear for specific shoots and work that into the budget of the video. This will up the production value of your work, improve your portfolio, lead to bigger jobs, without setting you back a whole bunch of cash, or putting you in debt. Once you have saved enough money to invest in gear, buy high quality gear that will hold it's value and not ultra-cheap stuff that'll break and ultimately waste your money. This is best for your business in the long run.
    3. Understand that it is important to invest in yourself. Although it can be scary, you have to spend money to make money. A couple years back I sold my Sony A6300 so I could buy an A6500 simply for the in-body image stabilization. Although it might seem insignificant, I truly believe this upgrade was a huge stepping stone in my business. That little detail was enough to make my videos better, particularly if I didn't want to use a gimbal. Getting smooth footage became easier, more convenient, and ultimately had a positive impact on my growth as a freelancer.
Thanks for making this video Matti! 👊

I really liked this video and this “lifestyle” can be used for others things you want in life. Like traveling a lot etc.
I wanted to add some good tips I’ve learned being a young/ broke filmmaker (if you wanna call me that lol)
    1) you can make a great video with a cheap camera if learn how to use it properly. Example: watch Christian Mate Grab new video shot all with a DJI Osmo
    2) used camera gear holds its value fairly well. If you buy it for the right price and sell it a year later, you probably won’t lose much/any money. I started with a cheap $200 camera and a year later (a year of saving) sold the camera and bought a $600 camera/ lense and then saved up for awhile to but some nice lenses and then eventually switched to a full frame. So on and so forth. You can start honing your skills now with a cheap camera while saving for the next upgrade. I avoid buying any camera gear new unless I know I’m going to keep it for a long time.
Thanks for the great vid Matti

I think a lot of people overlook diminishing returns. It goes with just about everything(I see it in computers a lot) people want the biggest & the best, when in reality, they only use a small percentage of that... For example, if you are pursuing RUclips, you don't need a full frame camera(I have 3 cameras, all APS-C & under $1000, took a year of saving), but most people see everyone else with that, get envious, go into debt, then barely use it...

Love the video and tips! Managing our finances is an essential habit to have in our life and maybe business (for some). I’m only 23 and one main lesson I learned growing up is to stop comparing yourself with others. We can get so caught up with gear and watching other people’s video that we tell ourselves I “need” this gear, etc. and we might emotionally make bad decisions/purchases (I’m guilty of this) and then you don’t really use it as much.
Just like what Matti said, work hard and save up. If you can’t afford it then don’t buy it. Save up for it or rent the gear.
In my opinion, ask yourself this question- what problem will this purchase solve? If you think a particular purchase will help solve a problem with your workflow then ask yourself the financial question- can I afford it or should I just rent it because it is a temporary problem I need to overcome.
At the end of the day, if you are making videos/taking pictures as a job or business then you really should run the numbers, research, what is the best investment and do I really need it.
If you are doing it as a hobby then I would say just save up and buy it when you can. No need to put yourself in debt for something you’re doing as a hobby and not making money from (yet 😉)

i think the best way is to buy cheap and sell at normal price, so you can work with your gear, but your gear value is working for you. i'm in the photo industry for big part of my life, tried few buying strategies and never experienced that kind of grow in my gear case. I never buy gear that's more expensive than 2-3 shoots i make, and i rather invest in glass first, then cameras. I've made soooo many photos with my old 1Ds mark III and with good glass the results was fantastic.

Love your content Matti! and agree on saving and grinding it out, no drinking coffee or eating out.. however I have to disagree on a few points.. Getting a house/condo with a mortgage (mind you a low mortgage you can afford ) earlier on in life is much better than renting for years so you can buy gear. This is due to the appreciation and not throwing money away for rent every month, which in one year would add up to at least $18 000 in the Toronto or even Newmarket area where you are based (This is on $1500 rent/month for 1 bedroom apt) . FOR EXAMPLE. If you and a friend/brother/spouse buy a house in partnership for $500 000 when you are 22 years old, right out of college - you each take a $250 000 mortgage at 3% interest rate, this equals to a payment of $650 per month plus $500 misc utilities or condo fees. Your monthly living payments would be $1150 (30% of which goes to your principle) vs $1500 rent which is paid to landlord or rent. If your home or condo appreciated in value which all property does even at a 5% annually, you would on paper also earn $25 000 in appreciation every year (which is split between your partner at $12 500 annually compounded). All this you can cash out through refinancing at anytime, so if in a year you want to buy all your equipment at once, you could with that money, just increase your mortgage slightly until you earned money from your gigs to repay it if you wanted to. To anyone who doesn't know about real estate investing in North America, you can buy a house with 0% down payment as long as your credit is reasonable, if you are paying rent , save for a year living at home, till you have 5% down payment if you choose to and then do the above on your own.
As a home owner you also have a studio, extra space and well you learn more things that you already know, like tax sheltering, business write-offs. Anyway, fundamentals are important and I like what you're saying and the message you're spreading. Anyway keep making awesome videos, I've learned alot thus far in filming. I would love to pick your brain sometime, I'm in the GTA also.

Well said. I took your approach to saving to afford what I wanted/needed. I purchased a iMac Pro this summer as I was planning to start working with 4K video more often. I am now looking for a camera. I am hoping for something like a EOS R Pro, of 5d mark v. Essentially what I 1D can do but in a modern package. I have the budget. My budget came from tax returns, garage sales, doing some odd work like web sites and teaching English over the past six years. I can spend the money and not feel guilty of taking money away from family activities and my wife does not mind as it can from other activities. She in fact encourages this. But as you said, this all starts when we are young. Don't move out when you are young. Don't buy a car. DOn't spend $20 a day on coffee and food. It all adds up pretty quick.

Really appreciate this video. Since I was born I’ve never really bought coffee or new clothes that often. Being able to not be a spender has allowed me to save money.
Also, had no debt too! So grateful for that!
The only thing that’s different between us is that I’ve lost that drive to work hard that I’ve had most of my life, been kind of just apathetic lately :(

I have always wanted to share this thought with many people who see other people with expensive gears and feel, oh, wow, he must be really rich. No, most are just veryyy hardworking and learnt to save save save and save. Learnt to deny themselves of many things so that they can save for the greater good. And the problem some other people have again is, when you are trying to raise capital, don't rush it. Sometimes I find myself rushing. I want to start saving and I want the saving to end in one month and then head to the market to just buy the gear but it doesnt work that way. It takes time. I am glad you mentioned yours is almost 10years. This is exactly how life works. Work veryyy hard, and saveeeee very hard. And don't envy people you see with expensive gear. Not all of them came from wealthy homes. Many of them started really poor and just learnt to save and work hard.

I'm in a developing country. Where income is less, yet the expenses like those you mentioned, are not so expensive either. Like average monthly salary here is some 250 dollars. And we can have DAILY home food at average 1.5 dollars total for a family of 3/4. rest all expenses might go to additional 2.5 dollars per day TO THE MAX if you're from a middle class bg. that means 4 dollars a day gone, multiplied by 30 we get 120 dollars, we can still save 130 dollars equivalent money per month. Though very less, but still, If I have a chance to do this in my developing country, you all can do that in your developed countries with high average income either.

It’s so true. I hardly make much at my job... but if it’s something I really want, I always save up for... I’ve been able to buy 4 different camera bodies in the last 3 years and have a decent collection of lenses. Half of them are second hand. So everything doesn’t have to be band spankin new. Now I’m saving for my 5th camera body but stuck on which one I want to get.

Solid advice. Delivered through something not so widely used in society like pro cinema/video gear, but still solid. I've always followed the principle of not buying a single thing, if I cannot pay it 100% from the day 1. As a result, I owе no money for my car, my TV, my full frame camera, my smartphone... you get the idea. The "I want this now" approach is harmful and results in you getting less things and creating yourself needless worries for payments and restrictions. Save your money, be patient, at the end you will probably end up buying the next generation of the same thing, which is going to be even better and actually yours.

Correct about spending the same or less each year, I work a job which pays fortnightly and am lucky to have that. I haven't saved up for anything in a while because I just buy new kit (or used) whenever I have the money to afford it and not go broke for that couple of weeks or rest of the month. I see gear as an investment but also always want a new lens or light or camera.. it is tough living in London because everyday you are drained financially.

Hey, Matti! I just wanted to take a minute to let you know just how much you hit home with this one. As a Venezuelan, I know exactly just how real it is to yearn for gear which is just beyond your wildest dreams and not just that but fear for your camera whenever you take it out in public. I can also say after a year in Chile that when in a decent economy, you can manage your money in a way to make those goals attainable by living simply and with your eye on the prize down the road. It's funny, since I had no idea we shared this frugal approach to gear and I saw so much of myself in your words. I also wanted to thank you, since I had let photos and video go as a way of making a living when still in Venezuela and just months ago, I took it up again after being inspired by creators/youtubers such as yourself. I really appreciate your work, channel and words.

my story: i started off 2+ years ago with just a fuji xt2 that I had received from my parents as a graduation present. I went back to college and graduated in my 30's. They couldn't afford a $3k sony and I wanted a good hybrid (photography and video camera) and at the time the fuji xt2 was the best out for our budget.
I saved my money and bought my 1st prograde lens. The fuji 90mm f2. I wanted a really good portrait lens and as it was voted as one of fujis best lenses ever and was WR I was sold. Shot my 1st wedding a week later and made $500 to pay half of that lens off right then and there.
Fast forward a few months bought my 2nd lens the fuji 23 1.4. Got a great deal on ebay a like new lens for 50% off. Really wanted this for something decent at low light much better than the 18-55 kit lens (although fuji has the best kit lens of all time) Fast forward a few more months to christmas I asked for micro extension tubes. Much cheaper than a true macro lens but it was good enough to do the job.
Fast foward another year I had done enough projects I could buy the very professional 16-55mm 2.8 fuji zoom. This with my 23 1.4 and 90 f2 meant I had a very powerful lens kit now. Also bought the rokinon 12mm f2 for astrophotography for $200. Great deal on that.
Fast foward another few months got the zhiyun crane v2 on sale at b&h over 50% off. I realized I didn't need a newer gimbal like the crane 2 or the ronin s at the time b/c their main advantage over the v2 was how much weight it could hold and with my ligth weight setup i didn't need it. So saved even more money not getting the latest gimbals when honestly they wouldn't do much more for me.
Recently now 2 & 1/2 years down the road my side business is starting to finally pick up. Doing a lot less free gigs and more paid gigs. I also discovered there's a lot less competition for wedding videographers than for wedding photographers in my area. Where before especially on social media finding clients was almost impossible bc there were 200+ other people also messaging them with video I have tons of clients messaging me now. Wish i started video seriously a lot earlier. Recently been decking my gimbal out, got the dual handle bars, an external montior (feelworld master a5, same specs as small hd just not touch screen for $150 instead of 1k) got a decent mic, got some variable nd filters, and got an on camera light and some small rig clamps to put them on my gimbal.
About to buy a drone soon (probably the fimi x8 se, maybe the zino or evo) The fimi is the same sony camera/gimbal as the mavic pro 1 just w/out the front forward sensors, but $500 less who cares. Probably getting the xt3 or xh1 as my next camera too. The xt3 being the overall better camera and one of tlhe best mirrorless cameras out there especially for the price. But the xh1 being super tempting especially with its ibis, combo that with my 16-55 and 90 both being amazing lenses but their 1 flaw not having ois, ibis would make them legendary.
I'm always looking for deals. Always saving money, using money I get from jobs to reinvest back into the company. Always saving any tiny bit I can (i deliver pizza so I don't make a lot)
Speaking of deals, if you can swing 2k... b&h currently has the fuji xh1 and the 8-16mm f2.8 on sale for $2,300. Not bad at all. But the 8-16mm lens is worth $2,000 by itself. So one can sell it and get a xh1 for $300 brand new currently. That's a crazy good deal. Best $300 camera one could buy in 2019 by far. I maybe selling a few video games and other stuff to be able to swing this myself. Seeing how the camera is now on sale for $999 and was $1,800 a year ago this is crazy. Point is always be on the lookout for great deals they can save you hundreds and over time thousands of dollars.
I don't know how I got to this point but I currently have over $5,000 in camera gear. That maybe not a lot to some people but that was a lot to me. And I had to work really hard to get all of it and reinvest everything but its just now getting to a point where its really starting to take off finally. From what i've heard from others this is pretty common, usually takes about 2 years in this business, especially wedding photography & video where so much is word of mouth. Not to mention me getting married and moving to a whole new state where I don't know anyone. At the rate I am growing i'm hoping to raise my prices in 2020 a little bit, keep getting more and more clients, and eventually buy a medium format fuji camera, either the gfx 50 R or S or the 100mp one. A few years ago I could never see myself owning a $5k or $10k camera but now its a very real opportunity 3-5 years down the line or less.
Just want to thank my parents who bought me my 1st camera. My wife who's been with me on this journey the last 2 years, fujifilm for making great cameras and lenses. B&H for great deals, and my clients who've helped me pay the bills and build my portfolio this far.
Moral of the story, long story short, save money, reinvest money you make working, look for deals, and you too can eventually own a lot of nice camera gear too.

This has pretty much been how I've been able to afford gear... and avoid hurting too bad when life hits hard. I manually keep track of every penny I spend or move, which keeps me aware of my finances. I keep a set amount in my main account each week, 10% of my net goes in to savings, and anything extra goes into a gear fund. This also means any extra income also gets split between savings and my gear fund, and it doesn't see my main account ever.
EDIT: That also doesn't account for the part of my gross income that goes into retirement funds. Save, save save!
