  • KAFOs- knee ankle foot orthosis- are leg braces that aid paraplegics to walk after sustaining their spinal cord injury. Although leg braces cannot be worn all day, they help retrain the spinal cord how to walk and can aid in SCI recovery that way. There’s many other health benefits with consistent use of leg braces, including increasing bone density and muscle, and preventing skin, bone, and joint issues, as well as decreasing blood pooling in our lower limbs. Overall, it’s beneficial to use leg braces shortly after sustaining a spinal cord injury, as recovery can be somewhat time sensitive. But be sure to avoid the mistakes I made when making my KAFOs, such as choosing the wrong lock and not designing them to fit inside my shoes.
As a disclaimer, I am not a doctor. I am just speaking from my own personal experiences as a complete T11 and T12 paraplegic who has been using leg braces to walk for about 2 months now. I also don’t want to oversimplify walking after SCI because recovery in general is very complicated. There’s not a simple answer of “how to walk as a paraplegic,” but this is a valid option!
Thank you for being patient with me as I am learning how to use youtube and this new paralyzed body at the same time! :)
If you have any questions, don’t be afraid to leave them in the comments. I’m mostly an open book, just be respectful.

Priority of being able to walk really depends on the person, for a lot of people like yourself after the reality of the injury sets in and you realize what you can adapt to in the wheel chair and most of the activities you like to do are still possible, then priorities change and you adapt. For others that have activities or passions in their life that require that recovery of mobility, the priorities never change, although realistic expectations do

    Billy footwear is amazing

I also wear kafo leg braces that are very thick and bulky around my foot and ankles. Billy shoes in there widest shoe weren’t even close to fitting over my braces.
I finally had to ask my orthopedist to order me shoes. He ordered me Mt.Emey Apis Answer2 shoes that are made specifically for afo and kafo leg braces.
Granted they are very “medical” looking velcro shoes but there the only shoes that I am able to wear with my kafo’s. I actually have a RUclips channel describing the different shoes I have found over the years that fit comfortably with my braces. Hope this helps!! Also don’t know if you know about kafo socks ?

Well I’m pretty new to using leg braces so it’s still super hard and doesn’t look the best but it’s still exciting! I don’t have much sensation below my injury but I’d probably say over the past week I’ve actually gained more sensation in regard to my bladder and some other places. I’ll probably make some sort of other video explaining exactly what’s been going on 😂 I’m good thank you! I might be starting college in the fall!

@@marcus6186 yeah so it’s been busy around here! I don’t think I have foot drop and I’m not sure why so many are curious about it but when I’m walking with the braces, it holds my ankle in a 90 degree position so it doesn’t have the opportunity to drag 😂

What’s the price range for these braces? Are they covered thru insurance or does your doctor have to give consent for your to try these braces ?

@@bossent.9575 I'm not a technical guy, Ive seen it in my cousin who had an accident and got paralyzed neck down! after couple of surgeries and a lot of physical therapy, he got control of his two hands, (1 hand completely, and another one around 70%, he cant move his fingers in that hand) he also got some improvements in his leg. sadly they stopped, had they not stopped and continued to do physical therapy after the accident, he might have gained control of his legs. what ever you do, do not stop, do not lose your hope. I hope your son does a full recovery. God bless you
