He said "Silicon Graphics" a couple times when he meant "Silicon Knights." I understand, as the two companies are from the same era and sound similar. As much as I have been a lifelong fan of this series since playing Soul Reaver as a child, after seeing what they were doing with Dead Sun, i'm happy it was cancelled. For a start, it was set in a part of the timeline that was canonically destroyed, set in the original Soul Reaver 1 timeline, but after the events of the game...which would be impossible as the world would have already decayed. Aside from showing whoever was in charge did not know about the lore of the franchise enough, they also wanted to make it pointlessly "gritty and mature" and what they meant by that was no more shakesperian level dialogue, it was a load of modern swearing with random boobs on display...if Dead Sun was released, it would have been the only new entry in the franchise as that game would have killed the IP completely. It's best to be left with Defiance's unknown finale than it was to have butchered the legacy with what Dead Sun was going to be.
I agree, it had all the halmarks of different devs working on an IP they probably had no initial love for and wanting to mix it up and "improve" it by doing it their way with no regards to what elements were enjoyed by fans. A Shakespearean play-style game right now would be so refreshing, considering every single game is gritty and realistic and everyone has this samey "naturalistic" voice acting style that feels so over-acted.

Finally got round to watching this awesome Complete History of! Amazing job 👏👏👏👏 I’ve got such fond memories of Soul Reaver. The story and lore felt so unbelievably dense and intricate. I was 13 in 1999 and that first Soul Reaver game on PS1 along with Metal Gear Solid totally and redefined what I thought a video game could be.
I am so happy you found the time to watch this video this video took a very long time to finish as is the one on working on right now I really appreciate the support
As someone who has bought every legacy of kain game, Blood Omen 2 has to be my fav. Really hoping they release a remaster or sequel. I loved being able to use your abilities to solve puzzles like mind controlling people to distract enemies in order to get into a certain room. The variety in new armors and upgrades were what really made the game great.
So dope, thanks for bringing back this awesome serious ! I was so young that I was drawn fully in another world when a older friend and me played it. Maybe there wasn’t that much, and I appreciate the effort on the research, but I was wishing for more in game lore and story !
So glad you decided to do this series! I'm glad most of these are still available on PC, and Soul Reaver and Blood Omen are available digitally on PS3 and Vita in their original PlayStation versions
I don't know about Soul Reaver remasters, but I do know that Denis Dyack started a new dev company called Apocalypse Studios, and the first thing they're working on is the spiritual successor to Blood Omen. It's called Deadhaus Sonata, I recommend looking it up.
I got excited and looked it up. I’m sorry to plainly say that it looks awful.. Besides the gameplay itself, immediately I was disappointed with the art direction (very generic over-designed-gamey-Blizzard-mobile-fantasy instead of down to earth medieval fantasy). Not to mention it’s F2P, has co-op and advertises built in Twitch support as a touted feature. If that character model didn’t look like a redone Kain I would have no idea this was meant to be a spiritual successor.
@@RoseSailor did you see more recent images? The game seems to have suffered a complete aesthetic overhaul and no longer looks like a cartoony fantasy blizzard game. Looks much moodier and down to earth.
Thank you so much! Was absolutely stoked to see this posted! And seeing The Complete History: ShadowMan at the end... OMFG! YES! YES YES YES! FINALLY! A thorough, deep dive into a truly strange and insanely unique gaming experience?! Sign me up!
Aaayo, there was no Soul Reaver 2 for the Dreamcast, it was cancelled when they pulled the plug on the DC. The DC got a greatly upgraded port of the PS1 version.
Soul Reaver on PS1 is a favorite game. Michael Bell as Raziel was awesome along with the other voice actors. Amazing musical score by Information Society, challenging puzzles and gameplay and cool Nosgoth to explore. Sadly, a reboot of the series doesn't seem to be happening any time soon.
First time I saw the Soul Reaver opening cinematic on a demo disc, I became a fan for life. Although it was a cancelled series, I do think Defiance serves as a fitting finale for Legacy of Kain, considering the tone of the series. And I was glad Dead Sun got the axe. Did not look in keeping with the other stories.
@Slopes this was always one of my most favorite childhood games. rooted me in my own conscious culture lol like i became more aware of things id eventually fall deeply in love with like short stories, dark lore, gothic bleak realities. uggggh dude you blew my mind with the CHAKAN ref, seriously also one of my favorite childhood games id play on SEGA in between that, 32x, Master console plug in, & CHANNEL lol, the fact they have a connection and not a semblance in style made my year dude. dying for a new adventure into Soul Reaver. still praying to the ps5 gods that itll happen one day, loved the video, so vv appreciated Slopes
Well congratulations peoples!! Embracer group bought a shit ton of IPs for the cheap, and they have announced that they will indeed make a new Legacy of Kain.
Those are my most favorite game on the PlayStation I played blood Omen first excellent and the other two were just as excellent great video bro!!!! Thank you!!!!!
Blood Omen was my favorite in the series but I don't think people who weren't around at the time realize how awesome soul reaver was when it first came out. There was so much stuff you could do in it that you couldn't do in any other game
My favorite series ever and is responsible for getting me into multi verse theory and expanding my vocabulary immensely. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who had to look up the meaning of more than a fair share of words they used. Thanks for doing this video Dj Slope. Vae Victus!
I played every one of the games only because the storytelling was second to none. If you like vampires, gothic settings, time travelling or across dimensions and ultimately complex storytelling with twists and all the elements of a detective story eg vengeance, murder, betrayal and add a great musical score and cut scenes, then this is the franchise for you. After playing the game you will be so drawn in you'd probably do what most fans did and that's scour the internet to fill in the gaps in the time line, explanation of the time elements and plot holes and will be left wanting more. Remastering or a remake of the series would revive the franchise and gather a bigger fan base, which ultimately could push for another title in the series, personally I would like to see some kind of TV series similar to The Witcher as it really has the potential in the fantasy genre post Game Of Thrones. After all there's massive vampire, zombie and post apocalyptic fans out there that would definitely take a punt at the story line.
I will forever have the jewel case of Blood Omen etched in my memory.. When I was very young and we’d visit my Uncle’s family, his sons had a Playstation and they’d show us all their games. I pulled out Blood Omen and asked what it was; He stated that I couldn’t see that game because it was too grisly and scary, explaining that you played as a villainous vampire but that he would show my cousin and older brother after I went to bed.. I was 8 and very annoyed cause I played DooM and Mortal Kombat religiously (or perhaps sacrilegiously during those days of video game controversy). So I would just stare at it during that week there, especially the skull with it’s eyeball and the screen grab of Malek. I wouldn’t get a chance to play it proper until I got a Playstation 2, having played Soul Reaver on Dreamcast first. To this day I play Blood Omen almost every Fall to get in the Halloween spirit :)
I have to agree with everyone here. This series is absolutely my favorite, and will always be fondly loved in my heart. A remake would be great, or at least a continuation from where defiance ended. Seeing how the “god” Kain gave “the business “ to vowed revenge. Also, I didn’t realize The first Blood Omen was that hard to find. Really happy that I found the director’s cut version at a flea market. Lol
The only ppl who find the excellent timeline confusing are those who don't understand temporal paradoxes or alternate timeliness. Or those who haven't played the whole series... lol
My first one of these was Soul Reaver. I loved it! I didn't know everything was going on but the world felt big. I wondered what the giant skull was but it didn't matter. And the light Metroidvania was cool. The rune puzzles were fun but sadly most of the magic was pointless. The puzzles were a bit too blocky, but the ones involving timing were great. And the soundtrack kicked ass... and NO LOADING! And the lock-on mechanic made 3D combat easy! You can get Blood Omen on the PS Store for £4.99 right now. I had it on PlayStation and enjoyed it. Finished it too, cheated a lot but I really enjoyed the exploring and the fighting and the story and the way it made you feel clever for remembering you could go back and open a section. Good soundtrack in sections; the bits in Nupraptor's Skull Castle stick in my mind. I enjoyed Soul Reaver 2 with the improved combat that could be brutally hard. Very linear, no real exploring, but fun. And great story! Blood Omen 2... was OK. I finished it, sort of... in that I defeated the end boss and the bastard thing crashed. I really liked Deliverance, it was clever and fun! What could have been...
No surprise the multiplayer one nosgoth was cancelled and lets not talk about the dead sun one....the really sad part is that we are almost 20 since lok defiance was released.and if they were to reboot the series like they wanted with dead sun,we better remain with the classic ones.
32:10 looks like Eddie from Iron Maiden ! Love this game series one of my favourites... to be honest I enjoyed every single one played though them all about 10 years ago in order took about 5 weeks. Brilliant story line.
I played Soul Reaver when I was 13, was sleeping over at a friends house who had it and I stayed up all night playing it and loved it, never played it ever again for some reason though
I began from defiance and boy it was hard to understand who and why. but the vibes the voice the story just amazing to tears at the end. who knows, the coin is still turning ... maybe we will get our sequel.

This is dropping right when I'm getting in to a serious LoK obsession.
It happens to us all
If you want more, look up Deadhaus Sonata. Denis Dyack's back at the head of a new company, and they're making the spiritual successor to Blood Omen.
So glad you decided to do this series! I'm glad most of these are still available on PC, and Soul Reaver and Blood Omen are available digitally on PS3 and Vita in their original PlayStation versions
Soul Reaver is awesome now that I illegally acquired the first two on my laptop.
I'll never stop fighting for a RELEASED Soul Reaver sequel or remake or reboot or remaster. Whatever, jst wanna see Raziel back in 4K!!
Rumors are they're being remastered, reason why the game's were pulled out from steam recently
I'd realy love to see a SR remake with all the deleted content!
@@RoseSailor did you see more recent images? The game seems to have suffered a complete aesthetic overhaul and no longer looks like a cartoony fantasy blizzard game. Looks much moodier and down to earth.
The fact its 2022 and we still don't have a VTM Bloodlines sequel and Blood omen has been abandoned is just...so puzzling and frustrating.
The quality. Wow dude. God tier
Oh, I see you're doing the Lord's work today.
The original Blood Omen might be still available on PSN for the PS3. That’s how I got it many moons ago.
Thank you so much! Was absolutely stoked to see this posted! And seeing The Complete History: ShadowMan at the end... OMFG! YES! YES YES YES! FINALLY! A thorough, deep dive into a truly strange and insanely unique gaming experience?! Sign me up!
Just finished the video. Will be up within a week or so :D
I LOVE Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain 1. It is SUCH a great game.
Thanks for this. This series deserves a remake. Absolutely loved Soul Reaver 1 and 2
I loved this series with the high watermark going to Soul Reaver 2 for the Sega Dreamcast. At the time that was one of my all time favorite games.
Don't be sad, Deadhaus Sonata is coming. Denis Dyack's making it for us. Nice of him, right?
Those Soul Reaver commercials were mint.
Video starts at 4:21
Legacy of Kain gets the Slope treatment! As always, a great and in-depth, well researched video.
Legacy of Kain is a classic. Such a bleak, dark series but also very unique and engrossing and atmospheric.
As a massive fan of LOK and being from Toronto a fan by default of Silicon Knights, this was amazing to watch. Very well done Daniel! Cheers buddy!
More than welcome. Glad you enjoyed it mate
Lovely, I miss this series!!
just got a Legacy of Kain tattoo
WOW! REALLY! Then this video is dedicated to you!
*Sees the trapezoid Soul Reaver PC box*
_Yeah, that's the stuff_
It seriously stands out
@@slopesgameroom It does. Soul Reaver, Tomb Raider and Thief look very unique in these boxes.
Honestly, I think Dead Sun would have been amazing. Whether or not it deserved to be 'Legacy of Kain' is a different story.
As good as Dead Sun could have been, I'm more looking forward to what Deadhaus Sonata is going to be. Check it out, Denis Dyack's new game.
Verok's patch is the definitive way to play Blood Omen 1, not wrace's.
@Mike will Sure am.
Well chuffed you enjoyed it mate... Many thanks
Well congratulations peoples!! Embracer group bought a shit ton of IPs for the cheap, and they have announced that they will indeed make a new Legacy of Kain.
One of the best stories ever legacy of Kaia had it all.
"I know you, Raziel".
Man, I love these games. I still own a PS1 just so I can play Blood Omen and Soul Reaver.
Oh wow legend. Loved This series.
Awesome video, thank you.
You are more than welcome
Thanks RUclips for not notifying me on a video on one of the greatest series in History
Absolutely awesome stuff brilliant video dude!😎🤘
Glad you liked it mate
What an opening! I was scared and impressed!
Great video too thanks so much.
Lol
WOOOOO THANK YOU!
More than welcome
@@slopesgameroom i never knew you replied. so cool!
Thank you! I knew you'd get around to this! You stud, you.
Oooooh behave
Really enjoyed the lore of this ip back in the day
I love this GAME they should make a HOLLYWOOD Movie of this GAME!!!
The only ppl who find the excellent timeline confusing are those who don't understand temporal paradoxes or alternate timeliness. Or those who haven't played the whole series... lol
That Dead Sun looks like it has real potential.
Those Soul Reaver TV adds are PURE GOLD 😂😂😂. Talk about non-sequiturs and kitsch 90s TV
A great look at a great series. I loved the LOK games and loved this look at them. Cheers, Slope!
Huge thanks mate, appreciate the support
Still got my copy of the first one..still love and adore it...i even have the offical strategy guide for it
Gotta love those 90s commercials.
I played Soul Reaver when I was 13, was sleeping over at a friends house who had it and I stayed up all night playing it and loved it, never played it ever again for some reason though
Excellent retrospective
I love how the health bar in all the games is the Dreamcast Spiral
...it's thinking!
I began from defiance and boy it was hard to understand who and why.
but the vibes the voice the story just amazing to tears at the end.
who knows, the coin is still turning ... maybe we will get our sequel.
I just recently replayed soul reaver 1 and 2, just in time DJ Slope lol
I have never played any of these games. But really want to try them after seeing this.
