Brass sousaphones will resonate better than fiberglass for obvious reasons. Yes, lower octaves on a sousaphone are much more difficult to be heard than higher octaves. Fiberglass or not, it will take a lot of air to be heard on the lower octaves at the same power as the upper octaves. Which is why most sousaphone/tuba sections split the octaves among each other in a 2:1 (low:high) ratio.
I remember we had 4 FiberBrass Jupiters at my high school. I played one my senior year and it just paled in comparison to the old Conns and Holtons we had. My first year there I played a Holton, the next year I played a Conn 14K, and my senior year I played a Jupiter. The brass horns are superior (more resonance), but different strokes for different folks as they say.
Im glad I finally found a video of just you guys playing. Ya'll got some sound. But I would really love to here you guys on some silver or brass horns. Man, I can only imagine cause i know thats never gonna happen. Be ups though. Yall should have more video of just yall. B phi B 05'
Sousaphones hold the band together. I played a fiberglass and it played really awesome. There is nothing wrong with fiberglass. BTW we got a superior on the mpa that year.
Actually fiberglass sousaphones are about the same in price as the brass ones depending on the brand that is purchased. If I was Southern's Director and we were in line for some new tubas, I would get the new FiberBrass Sousaphones by Jupiter. They have the look and weight of fiberglass but the sound of regular brass. They can be seen on the SamAsh website
@finneyboy50 VSU uses Conn 20K sousas, and those are 6/4 size sousaphones. So naturally they're going to be bassy and loud. I've played King brass and fiberglass sousas, they put out the same volume and they're both 4/4 size sousaphones. The bigger the tuba/sousa, the darker and louder it's going to be. The smaller the tuba/sousa, the brighter and thinner it's going to be. Valve bore is of small importance when compared to the bugle size.
It is. For our homecoming game, one of my schools alumni from Cookman brought one of their old, not silver, horns and I got to try it out. It was sexy. Nice fat loud sound. hehe
@Rilo12 I must agree fiberglass horns sound hollow because sound is created by vibrations since they are so stiff fiberglass will never resonant the same as brass but them boys sound descent though...
@sousa07ful the big thing about fiberglass sousaphones is they produce a nice tone on high notes (it's really crisp) but brass sousaphones are much "warmer" in tone
@3knurcbct yes the tone is more raspy and doesnt sound as full as a brass i've played both and if i want that blasting raspy tone i'd use a fiberglass but if i want the more full and to me louder tone brass
man i personally like SU tubas and i met some of them when they came to my school (TnSU) in 2008 but to the people that say they need brass horns......i say if it ain't broke don't fix it!!!!
Why is it that the left side is turned to where they can't even see, the conductor seems too close for anyone but the center to see, and he's not paying attention half of the time anyway?
@wilshawn91 straight up bruh, I love The Human Jukebox to death. It just kills me when people come on SU videos criticizing. If you think they are so horrible, then don't leave a comment. Now I respect BCU a lot for the simple fact that it's a HBCU and SU deserves the same respect. And to the people talking about "their plastic tubas", you're not the one playing on them so don't worry about them. "S"
@Rilo12 man SWAC would mess over any other Conference with Tubas, T-pets, horms, and everything else. JSU & UAPB not the only ones with nice Tuba secttions
Interesting comments on here. The main reason why any school uses fiber glass sousaphones is because they are cheap as shit. They are also super easy to blast on which I guess is why it fits SU's style.
Consider the camera, this is 2008, I was using a 2005 Model Samsung DV camcorder Unlike Today's High Def Video and Audio devices, the Mic is internal and directional. The camera catches what's directly in front of it more than any other sound. I'm less than 6 feet away from the tuba players at a Low angle, the sound changes as I move backward. The Audio is as standard as it gets for that era. Also, consider those guys are on fiberglass horns. They don't give off the rattling brass effect and as they do now with the Hybrids.
if you want clean, go drum and bugle, this is about power, pure and simple. if you don't care for the methodology that's probably because you're not part of the demographic it was designed for. the folks that are supposed to enjoy it do, everyone else, find another channel, trust me, we won't miss you
I've been playing tuba for about 2 years, and the only sousaphone i played was a fiberglass one. It was harder to get a single sound out of that thing compared to my normal brass tuba. Was the fact it was fiberglass the cause, or do i just suck?
This is 9 years ago but I have the same issue today… I can play much louder on a concert tuba, We only have 4 fiberglass sousas and they are old so. I tried someone else’s Sousa and had to hold the mouthpiece then I could play loud but I guess they each have problems
i apologize for that comment. CoolJoshBaby your right everyone has their time to shine...SU do your thing. im sure Su is loud as fuck on brass. fiber glass does hold back.. but its all good..RESPECT
Every time someone post a vid of SU, a SU hater always talk about the fiberglass Tubas when they can't find anything else wrong with SU. (And fiberglass is perfectly fine)
When it’s 2022 but this video pops into your head lol
Exactly why im here
Wow they're able to get an amazing sound out of those fiberglass Tubas!
And they JUST switched to brass 2 weeks ago!

Good Memories

Nah I can assure u they would have preferred conns lol
Im glad I finally found a video of just you guys playing. Ya'll got some sound. But I would really love to here you guys on some silver or brass horns. Man, I can only imagine cause i know thats never gonna happen. Be ups though. Yall should have more video of just yall. B phi B 05'
that didn’t age well
they crank that shit at the end.... TURN UP!!!
Sousaphones hold the band together. I played a fiberglass and it played really awesome. There is nothing wrong with fiberglass. BTW we got a superior on the mpa that year.
Definitely something wrong with fg brass when playing at such force
all dislikes came from Gram Fam. Lol maybe a few J-Stanks
Horsepower had the best tubas ever...watch the old vidz
Believe me when I say this, I do love Southern tuba section but there was something...missing from this.
yeah they had most of them them since the 1970's

those chords though

Still think about this video in 2024
HP owns this!!!!Best I've ever heard.
It is. For our homecoming game, one of my schools alumni from Cookman brought one of their old, not silver, horns and I got to try it out. It was sexy. Nice fat loud sound. hehe
the juke has always had fiberglass its part of there field show as well it catches the eye better
Morehouse has been doing those harmony splits on Transformers since the year 2000
tubas go in i love em
I love when ppl hate on tha best but I guess thats tha price U have to pay to be on TOP!
@Rilo12 I must agree fiberglass horns sound hollow because sound is created by vibrations since they are so stiff fiberglass will never resonant the same as brass but them boys sound descent though...
That's What I Call laying pipe!!!
@TheKidAdge Fiberglass fits their style and music more. There is probably various other reasons too for them having fiber glass.
Tubas com o bocal de saída de som de plástico, nunca tinha visto antes, até eu ver esse vídeo...
@sousa07ful the big thing about fiberglass sousaphones is they produce a nice tone on high notes (it's really crisp) but brass sousaphones are much "warmer" in tone
i will be down there in the N.O. for classic, so whats good lil homie lol
i apologize for that comment. CoolJoshBaby your right everyone has their time to shine...SU do your thing.
i sound lik shit wen i play on fiber but wen i go bac on too Silva KIng aint no stopin lol
@3knurcbct yes the tone is more raspy and doesnt sound as full as a brass i've played both and if i want that blasting raspy tone i'd use a fiberglass but if i want the more full and to me louder tone brass
@71196jmg,its their style..noone else is using white tubas.....this is their form of originality.
conn20k is the caddy of sousaphones
man i personally like SU tubas and i met some of them when they came to my school (TnSU) in 2008 but to the people that say they need brass horns......i say if it ain't broke don't fix it!!!!
as far as i know southern's sousaphones are fiberglass because of the sound the directors want. but then again i may be wrong.
my high scool has two conns we dont use them we have fiberglass yahmas and we can put out just as much sound as a brass sousaphone
]
god dame!!!!! thats hott
They would sound way better on brass not fiberglass
The Mayeux Productions also you can't do the fun moves on them
The Mayeux Productions lies they have them now and sound the same
Andy Mayeux Productions p
The fibreglass Tubas sound just as good.. Also they don’t get all of those dents in them from carelessness in just 2 yrs..
oh u knew what i meant. I stand corrected
Why is it that the left side is turned to where they can't even see, the conductor seems too close for anyone but the center to see, and he's not paying attention half of the time anyway?
@MrKomKast u must not have any taste because this was just amazing.
@MrGuitar144 I completely agree. I have a 20k of my own. It's a beast.
@NinjaMusicDude fiberglass horns shows how much of a beast you are, if you can play on fiberglass, WTF can you do on a brass horn?
Why us it that the left side is turned away from the conductor and the conductor isn't paying attention half the time?
@wilshawn91 straight up bruh, I love The Human Jukebox to death. It just kills me when people come on SU videos criticizing. If you think they are so horrible, then don't leave a comment. "S"
fiberglass sousaphones ar alot lighter too you can do more with them
Why do people come on here talking about the fiberglass, like it's going to change something?
@Rilo12 O I get it now. Ur saying we would be beastin if we had some brass
@trentsmith14738 coming from a tuba/sousaphone player i would like to say that we can be just as good as all the other instrument
They are actually fiberglass tubas
It sucks because its on fiber glass horn.
i love my fiberglass cuz i know mi school cant get the brass
my school has 1 fiberglass and 3 silver tubas we only use 2 of them
FHS silver Hornets p
they need to paint their tubas brown so it doesnt stick out so much.
@finneyboy50 oh yes i have and let me tell u, they are one of the best tuba sections.
Only if you knew how old those dam horns are
Set those sousa to stun!
Hell. If southern had brass tubas they'd cover the whole band up..
SU came a long long way from fiberglass tubas they came a very long way most improved section of the swac in 2022 goin into 2023
blat- blat -blat-blat
what's up with his audio or don't sound right I know it wasn't the tubas😂😂
Consider the camera, this is 2008, I was using a 2005 Model Samsung DV camcorder Unlike Today's High Def Video and Audio devices, the Mic is internal and directional. Book Multimedia tbh it was just the type of company there's was made by but some are good
How do you not pass out?
I can play both but fiberglass just doesn't have that ringing sound that brass does...fiberglass has an empty sound...
@MrKomKast whoever said that wouldve caught hell if he was in the program LMAO!!!!
Wow. It's alot of Grade "A" hate in here.
@TheKidAdge nothings wrong with fiberglass tubas
if you want clean, go drum and bugle, this is about power, pure and simple. if you don't care for the methodology that's probably because you're not part of the demographic it was designed for. the folks that are supposed to enjoy it do, everyone else, find another channel, trust me, we won't miss you
@guyvascm Fiberglass sounds THINNER on the high notes..If you think that good tone....
It's about weight. Nothing more.
@Rilo12 hey I'm A Southern Fan so I like White horse and not other
I've been playing tuba for about 2 years, and the only sousaphone i played was a fiberglass one. It was harder to get a single sound out of that thing compared to my normal brass tuba. Was the fact it was fiberglass the cause, or do i just suck?

i apologize for that comment. CoolJoshBaby your right everyone has their time to shine...SU do your thing. im sure Su is loud as fuck on brass. fiber glass does hold back.. but its all good..RESPECT
@falloutboy7778 I agree they sound good but muffled and it's not the players it's the Tubas this would sound a lot better
They sound tight, but they need some new horns, I don't care that its paper, i'm talking bout how old them horns are.
@bdoggwith2gz That's understandable for a high school but a college organization gets a lot more money for everything...
like the vid i have a brass tuba not sousaphone, why so many haters on fiber glass??
Obviously they have fiberglass! Very few schools could afford 15+ sousaphones!
Every time someone post a vid of SU, a SU hater always talk about the fiberglass Tubas when they can't find anything else wrong with SU. (And fiberglass is perfectly fine)
Hey, look at me I can breathe after every note! Oh, and blast! Yay for paying 20,000 dollar tuition to do this!
I need these notes
@martelbandheadsmith u right tho...
Anyone Got Sheet Music 2 This
Lol, it was. :P
The dude already explained why they have fiberglass... It won't fit there music , they would have to re-write all there music for the basses
tell me more about how much better u are than they because u have a brass sousaphone
in my opinion B-PHI-B have the best non sliver 20kz this side of the mississippi lol and cookman just got some sexy ass conns lol
