This is because he is using a technique called voice leading. This is when the highest notes that he is playing are the melody. This makes the melody stand out and you recognize it and your brain goes back to listening to the nickelback version.

How do I know about the emotions he puts into his music? Simple. I sit back, close my eyes, clear my mind, and let the music speak. I'm a lover of music, and an artist myself, and as such, music speaks to me in a different way than what normal speech is. I have learned to concentrate on more than just the sounds. I'm not saying I'm any different than you, or anyone else, I have simply learned to "listen" differently, and with more than just my ears. ^^

i've been playin for like 9 years, and i have to agree- i've been trying to learn his version of love in this club. IT AIN'T EASY!!
that being said, i'm almost halfway through and have only been trying to learn it for about 4 hrs.
The amazing part to me is that he makes THAT out of what he hears- combining the guitar, drums, piano, bass, etc. into his own music.
