    I'm a hairdresser, and I recommend to clients to also wet hair at home with regular waterbefore going to the pool and apply conditioner, leaving it in. If its long enough, braid it. That way when you get in the water you have at least a little bit of a barrier first and it doesn't absorb quite so much chlorine. Is this good advice, or pointless?

      Yes, my hairdresser told me the same thing, I would wet my hair, use a little conditioner and then a swim cap. Had to be careful not to use too much, otherwise I'd get a conehead! But it worked, also wet my whole body in the shower with my suit on before entering the pool. The night before I would use a body lotion on my skin also. It would be absorbed in my skin and would not come off in the pool. I could tell the difference in my skin and hair if I didn't take these steps.

      As a competitive swimmer and having to swim everyday my hair gets so dry but when I use leave-in conditioner the night before my swim cap slips off every time, so it’s hard to keep my hair healthy☹️

    • @CuddlyPuddles
      @CuddlyPuddles 3 года назад +46

      Hi! This is an old comment but I'm going to reply anyways. Yes absolutely wet your hair and tie it up so it doesn't soak up a bunch of pool water, but please don't apply a bunch of conditioner before jumping into a pool. I say this as a former competetive swimmer that tried shit like this before and as a former lifeguard who got to clean up the mess afterwards. You are leaving behind a gross oily film on the water and, especially if it's an indoor pool, you are literally making the air condition worse for your health and the health of everyone around you. Just get your hair completely soaked with normal water, wear a cap, and wash it as soon as your done. Theres shampoos and conditioners specifically made for swimming that designed to pull out the chlorine and metals and whatnot, there's deep conditioning treatments, I personally found apple cider vinegar rinses to be pretty effective when I was swimming with bleached hair. You have plenty of effective options that don't make things worse for the people around you.

I use an eczema lotion on my body, (I dont have eczema) and wear a longsleeve rashguard, long swim leggings, gloves, a full coverage hat and sunnies and/or uv goggles. I keep hydrated have a portable shower, dry off after each session, keep my hair up and ears out of the water when possible. I keep sunscreen on me at all times, stay in shade when possible and after work, shower with a vit c shampoo/body wash, and slug my skin with eucerin. I'd love to see a similar video on swimming in the sea. Where I live it is very common for people to get jelly fish burns and I'd love to know your expert opinion on how to treat them. The general consensus is that the best solution is to apply vinegar to the burn as soon as you get out of the water, but I can't imagine that's good for the skin. What would be the best way to treat a wound like that?

    Wished this video existed years ago, and I had seen it, when I used to swim a lot. Hell! I wish I had found your channel earlier. Another tip is to apply oil and soak up the hair with tap water before putting on the cap. Wearing a cap won't prevent hair from taking up water from the pool, but, in theory, if it's already wet it won't take up that much.

      Years ago I read that the green is not caused by chlorine but the fact that the pool chemicals cause oxidation of the copper plumbing pipes and the oxidized copper (which is a greenish blue) dilute into the pool water. Lightened hair can be very porous so it will absorb the copper more readily. Very light natural blonds will also show the green more readily.

A couple of years ago she developed a severe reaction to chlorine due to a daycare provider who didn’t have the kids wash chlorine off after swimming all day. Now her skin gets chemical burns when in chlorine. Are there any products that actually work to prevent the burns and hyperpigmentation? It took 8 months to go away! Are there any pool alternatives so that she can still learn how to swim without fear of burning? Any advice?

    • @noodle3218
      @noodle3218 2 года назад

      I'm no expert and my situation isn't identical to your daughter's, but my skin used to react to chlorine (painful red bumps/rashes, not burns so again my situation is slightly different), but for me it worked to cover myself with a thick "waterproof" sunscreen [and if I was gonna be in too long, I'd have to rinse off, dry off, and reapply]. And I do mean a thick sunscreen, sprays never worked, even if they claimed to be waterproof. And beware of bathing suits rubbing off areas of the sunscreen (especially legs and arms). Oh and has she tried salt water pools? They are supposed to be easier on skin, though she may still wanna cover somewhat especially if she's still sensitive.
      side note: unless the bottom of her feet react, I highly recommend NOT putting sunscreen on the bottoms of feet cuz it's a major slipping hazard. if the bottoms of her feet do react, she'd have to wear shoes or put on sunscreen while sitting by the pool and go immediately in and not come out a lot cuz sunscreen, especially waterproof, is far slipperier than people realize

    Hey doctor, is it better to wear a completely covered swimsuit from collar down to avoid chlorine damage? In that case, is it sufficient to wear water resistant sunscreen only on the neck, face, hands and feet?

    Help, my fingernails have delaminated, my toenails are also suffering. I take 5 aqua aerobics classes weekly - all European pools are chlorinated by decree/law, but I guess the side effects were not known when legislation passed. How/what can I use to protect myself. I steam and shower before and after every aqua class. Help please.

      I have a salt water pool at home and it is better for skin in general even though the cell salt device is breaking down chlorine and salt ions...still, there is chlorine but in a smaller amount... I found it gentler on the skin...lots of new research has also shown that sunscreen can be toxic with the ingredients they use ..the key is not to swim in the middle of the day where the sun is at its maximum (if no choice, pure virgin unrefined coconut oil offers natural protection).

      I don’t think any swim cap will keep your hair dry if you are submerging your head underwater. What you can do is wet your hair before putting a cap on to prevent the chlorinated water from soaking into your hair. Hope this helps!
