Polished frets not only look great, they feel it too. This is something you will only fully appreciate when you pick up the guitar to play it. Bends will be easier and overall you'll get far more enjoyment playing your instrument. As with all the maintenance we are doing, this can be done every time you change your strings.
There are two tools you will need to properly polish your frets.
1. Fret Guard
The fret guard is there to protect the wood on the neck from getting tarnished or scratched by the micro mesh papers. This is a preferable choice at this level to taping up every single fret as this is far more hassle and a pain to do regularly. These are available at any luthier supply stores.
2. Micro Mesh Papers
These are essentially very fine sanding papers. Exactly how fine they are, is measured by their grit rating. The higher the number, the more fine the paper. Standard sandpaper would typically be around 120 grit, whereas these papers go up to around 12000 grit! You should start with 1500 grit, then, as a good guide, work your way through 2400, 3600, 8000 and finally 12000. The 1500 will even up the frets and give them a nice shine. As you go finer and finer, you start to seriously polish the frets getting them into perfect condition.

Very informative. Ordered some micro mesh today. Hopefully i can bring my dull frets to life!
3000 is as high as you would ever need for metal, 3000 will give a mirror polish. I normally go from 400 -800 depending on how they are to begin with. Then 1200, 2000,3000.
Flitz polish is the best I've found. A couple wipes and they are smooth and pretty.
These videos are great guys. Just got a new guitar and your videos have instilled some much needed confidence when making adjustments, cleaning etc.

I like to keep my neck looking and feeling clean so that tip for people like who polish their frets on the regular really work for me. I hate the idea of making my frets play uneven on my new yamaha acoustic. to counteract this, I would use the heaviest grit on the last fret of the guitar. than work my way back to the first fret. the reason why is because guitars straight from the factory have a bit of fall away after the 12 fret to make playing to higher frets easier. so I'd use the same pad in the same area and only wipe my frets a certain number of times. since I'm doing most of the work with the first grit, I'd start out with 12 swipes between grits 1500 and 2400. than 10 swipes with grits 3200 - 4000, and than finally 8 swipes with grits 6000 to 12000. don't forget to tape of your fretboard so that you don't scratch the wood. I learned that one while working on a cheapo strat.

Exactly, what a complete waste of time. Maybe title it, "How to prepare for a fret polish." Maybe he could have got to it if the interviewer would have stopped asking knuckleheaded questions.
We don’t need constant clarification from you, buddy. These videos would be so much more smooth with just the guitar tech! Still, decent.

Theres absolutely no reason to work up to even close to 12,000 grit - unnecessary. You'll hit a mirror finish long before that point.
3/4 of the way through the video and you guys are still talking what a waste of time mates!
