He hand picked Denny Dougherty, and Mama Cass Elliot because their voices precisely fit the vocal registries he required for a harmony driven group. . The woman on the left is Michelle Philips, Johns wife. They lived in New York City During a particularly freezing winter and knowing Michelle missed her warm California weather. John completed the song very late one night .He woke up Michelle up to ask her to transcribe the lyrics he had just written. She wasn't happy about being awoken from a deep slumber. John enticed her by promising her a 50% cut of the songwriting credits. So she begrudgingly did. Smart move on Michele's part. The song was the bands first big hit. Reaching #4 in the spring of1966. I was the youngest of 4 kids (July 1959) So I don't remember hearing the music as much as I remember their albums by the family console HiFi. But in the 60's when my older siblings binged on The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Who, The Doors. My folks loved The Righteous Brothers, The Supremes, Sonny and Cher, Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass and The 5th Dimension. What an amazing time to grow up!!
