I was 16 in ‘66 when this song was #1. This group was as big as it got musically and culturally. Mama Cass had perfect pitch and was the backbone of the amazing group. Props to Wrecking Crew session band and studio. Just Freak’n great. This was the California groove that the Mamas and Papas had in spades. The highlight from the folk singers from earlier days. So happy you liked it.

God i love this song!!! It reminds me of the 1st time went to california in 2009. The nostalgia that this song has is incredible and the harmoney is awesome. It borderline brings tears to my eyes and its short and simple but a very powerful song. This will forever be a timeless classic. ...The song was released when music was music.

The gentleman playing the guitar is Papa John Philips. The mastermind behind the Mamas and the Papas. He hand picked Denny Dougherty, and Mama Cass Elliot because their voices precisely fit the vocal registries he required for a harmony driven group. . The woman on the left is Michelle Philips, Johns wife. They lived in New York City During a particularly freezing winter and knowing Michelle missed her warm California weather. John completed the song very late one night .He woke up Michelle up to ask her to transcribe the lyrics he had just written. She wasn't happy about being awoken from a deep slumber. John enticed her by promising her a 50% cut of the songwriting credits. So she begrudgingly did. Smart move on Michele's part. The song was the bands first big hit. Reaching #4 in the spring of1966. Their follow up single Monday Monday made it to #1 on the billboard charts. I highly recommend it. RNB

I wouldn’t say he handpicked mama cass, he didn’t even want her in the band and she wanted to join it badly, he thought her look, ie being overweight was a detriment. When he and michelle were broke and had no where to go they showed up at cass’s door and she let them stay in exchange for becoming part of the band and it was an offer they really could not refuse. Plus they treated her pretty badly once she was in the band, always making fun of her weight, etc.
Also, i wouldn’t really call john philips a gentleman, the man had an incestuous relationship with his daughter for years.

Never mind that john philips had an incestuous relationship with his daughter for years, never mind he and michelle had so much drugs lying around in bowls around the house and thought nothing of their young daughter using them so she ended up with a drug problem at a very young age. Except for cass they were all pretty awful people.

They sing about California of the 1960s. California is NOT like that anymore...by far...BUT love this group....Try their songs" Monday, Monday ', 'Dedicated to the One I love', ' Twelve thirty" , 'Words of Love", and of course, their autobiographical song of their own story sung by them which is rare to hear a group do, called 'Creeque Alley"
Creeque (pronounced creaky) Alley is a real place, one of a series of alleys (actually named Creeque's Alley and owned by the Creeque family) in the Virgin Islands.
    In the song 'Creeque Alley',
They are telling the (autobiographical) story of how they formed so they are talking about each of them and other singers/groups they were in, associated with, or friends with. Folk Music is where Michelle and John Phillips came out of in the early sixties. "John and Mitchy were gettin' kind of itchy Just to leave the folk music behind". Next lyric refers to Denny Doherty and Zal Yanovsky trying to make it big, get gigs, record made, recording contracts, anything: "Zal and Denny workin' for a penny Tryin' to get a fish on the line" "In a coffee house Sebastian sat
And after every number they'd pass the hat" refers to how John Sebastian, who wasn't a member of the Mamas and Papas, started out, as many folk singers did in the fifties and sixties. Song's lyrics: "McGuinn and McGuire couldn't get any higher, but that's what they were aiming at. Doesn't refers to drugs as much as aiming to reach the heights of music popularity and also a play on the Bryd's hit song "Eight Miles High'. 'McGinn' refers to Roger McGuinn, the lead singer of the pop/folk group 'The Byrds'. McGuire' refers to singer Barry McGuire who had some big hits in the mid-sixties, especially 'Eve of Destruction'. Example of the meaning of lyrics in the song: "Zally said Denny, you know there aren't many Who can sing a song the way that you do, let's go south Denny said Zally, golly, don't you think that I wish I could play guitar like you", refers Zal Yanovsky and Denny Doherty getting together, then joined by John Sebastian, "Zal, Denny and Sebastian sat (at the Night Owl) And after every number they'd pass the hat" was the three yound men trying to make it big before Denny met Cass Elliot and she joined the three guys. "When Denny met Cass he gave her love bumps..." (she was infatuated with him)..."Call John and Zal and that was the Mugwumps..." (The Mugwumps were a 1960s folk rock band, based in New York City. It released one self-titled album in 1967 and two singles. The Mugwumps found little success during their short time together in 1964, and are best known for launching the careers of Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty and John Sebastian and Zal Yanovsky who made up the group the Mugwumps, pronounced 'MUG-wamps', as in it rhymns with 'swamps'. After the group's breakup, Denny Doherty went on to team with Michelle ad John Phillips while John Sebastian and Za Yanovsky formed their group 'The Lovin' Spoonful'.... Hence the song's lyrics in Creeque Alley: "...Sebastian and Zal formed the (Lovin') Spoonful..Michelle, John (Phillips), and Denny gettin' very tuneful..." The writer of the song, John Phillips, takes some poetic licensein lyrics like "When Cass was a sophomore, planned to go to Swarthmore, But she changed her mind one day. Standin' on the turnpike, thumb out to hitchhike Take me to New York right away..." Cass Elliot hadn't ever planned to go to Swarthmore College but she did want to go to New York City.

Have y'all reviewed the band Meatloaf? Starting with the song" I would do Anything for love" ; ( but I won't do that). Then play some "Bat out of hell"

I have older brothers and sisters and I grew up with this group!!!!!!

That's awesome....kind of strange to share it on a video that has nothing to do with football though! 😂

@@1trumantucker1 hey I'm in the hospital and have been for the last 2 months and had noone else to share my happy news with. I'm sorry if I upset anyone and everyone. I I grew up with older brothers and sisters so I grew up with these artists and more cool artists and believe this song is one of the absolute best songs.

You guys should react to Redbone "Come And Get Your Love" if you haven't yet, they are a Native American group from the 70's. You guys would know this song from movies like "Guardians of the Galaxy"
