    Good evening! And welcome to another video from Scotland on a wonderful winter's morn! Today, we'll be going for a walk around the historic town of Dunblane, famous for its gorgeous cathedral, stunning riverside views and 1,300 years of riveting history - I really hope you enjoy it :)
    But while the modern settlement of Dunblane is said to date back to 'Dulblaan' over 1,300 years ago, there is some local history from even before then. Roughly 600 years before its founding, Dunblane was the site of three Roman military camps and a small fort, built as their armies marched north deeper into Caledonia. Ultimately, however, the Romans struggled to maintain a position in Caledonia, and retreated south, leaving Dunblane to the Celtic natives!

    Those of us old enough to remember will immediately associate Dunblane with something far more tragic... 😥
    Thank you for showing us the town as it deserves to be known.

      Indeed - sadly Dunblane is often overshadowed by that awful event, but I'm so glad you found this an eye-opening look into what is a beautiful, historic town that so often flies under the radar!
      Thank you so much for watching :)

    II visited Dunblane in May 2023 for 10 days. We stayed in a beautiful cottage on Sinclair Street. It was fantastic weather and we only met the sweetest, nicest, friendliest and best people there. It was a wonderful time in this lovely little town, which we enjoyed very much. A piece of our soul remains in Scotland and we would love to come back to Dunblane. Thank you very much for this nice walk in the fresh morning, which we took almost every day. Greetings from Germany

    We are in the process of purchasing one of the homes you walked by here and we're moving in a few months. I'm so happy to have this walking tour to send my family back in the states! Thank you!

    Fantastic for a former early 1950s QVS boy to see again, having been virtually raised to junior manhood on the edge of town.

      @Stanly Stud Stanley, in my day QVS was “boy Service” for the sons of Scottish soldiers sailors and airmen. For example we had the RSM, company sergeant majors, the teachers were royal Army education corps, the commandant was from a Scottish regiment and so on. On leaving school Most served in the services, for example I served in the Scots Guards

      @Stanly Stud Stanley my father was also Scots Guards until retirement, he was from Dundee area. Whenever I’m asked here in Canada where I’m from, I claim Dunblane. I really don’t have other roots, too many barracks and overseas postings, although Canadian roots since 1967

    You have literally just shown me my childhood. I grew up as a kid in the house above the cathedral hall and then in Bridgend and our family rented an office in the building next to St. Blanes and then later above the old post office near the station.

    The Dunblainers will spot that this walk was filmed on a Wednesday morning due to the dulcet tones of the fresh fish van man on his deliveries, tooting his horn to alert his patrons of his arrival.

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  2 года назад

      You're right on the money with that one! And thanks for pointing it out - I wasn't sure what the tooting was all about, it sounds like a nice local tradition :)

    Beautiful little place but awful people.

    • @wir154
      @wir154 2 года назад +1

      Dunblane now has almost 10,000 people living there, so I do not think you can just tar that many people with the same brush. Also I worked as a postie there for 28 years and there was a massive turnover of people in the town, with most of the houses on my delivery often not being occupied by the folk that had been there just a few years previously. In fact, around 90% of the people I know in Dunblane, plus the ones I delivered mail to, were/are not from Dunblane originally. Most native Dunblaners I know, now live elsewhere. I am not saying that the incomers are any better or worse than those who were born and brought up there however. It has gone though, from somewhere that was apparently 200 years ago, largely a fairly impoverished place, to being largely an expensive commuter town, though there are still small pockets of poverty and deprivation. The population of the town though has more or less trebled, since I was born in the 1960's.

      @@wir154 yeah it was the locals who had been born there who were awful
