    Thank you for this demonstration. I've always thought in theory stitching was stronger than rivets, but never took the time to test it. My interpretation of your demonstration is as long as you are buying quality materials it comes down to your preference in aesthetic and how much time your willing to put in. I prefer spending the extra time stitching on my personal projects, but my hands don't mind when a client wants rivets.

    I was always skeptical about double cap and quick rivets... always thought they would fail, but damn that was impressive. great video

    At least to me, it looked like the round stitch stretched the leather a little further. About 15 turns for the first rivet. Roughly 19 turns for the round stitch. 16 turns for the copper. The round stitch is impressive.

    With the leather failing first, it should be said that when building for strength, limiting the damage to the leather (holes / skiving) and spreading out the load are important. Stitching of the right size spacing, thread and pattern would likely be the strongest.

    This is awesome, it's something that has bothered me for a while now but this has put my mind at ease about what I'll use on each section because they all are great

    I'd love to see a similar test but pulling perpendicular to the surface rather than with it.

    When I have made mistakes and had to remove rivets, I can say that the Rapid rivets are a LOT less trouble to remove.

    by my count, you got a full 2 handle turns more on the stitching than the rivets. the rivets getting the same number of turns (counted from the point where the slack is gone)

    This was a very interesting video! I would be curious to find out what the max torch was before each finally broke. Also... Would be interesting to see it done of DIFFERENT TYPES of leather to see which leather is better. Great vid as always Tony! XOXO

    Watching younger Tony videos that I've missed. Did this test shear resistance instead of pull resistance?

  • @rogercrier

    What if the overlapping areas of leather were glued first, and then riveted. Both rivets seemed to have the leather cons of slide past and elongate the hole before ripping started?

    • @terpsmcgerps
      @terpsmcgerps 4 года назад +3

      The rivet shaft definitely acts as a force multiplier on the punched hole, so glue would help distribute the force over more of the strap. That said, considering how much force was likely on the straps in this video, you're already getting well into "what the hell do you have in your bag" levels. Under normal use with well maintained real leather and thoughtful design, Any of these methods should last longer than any of us. I'm not about talking anyone out of overkill, however - do what feels right.
      I'd definitely watch a mythbuster-esque breakdown using a load scale between different fastening methods if anyone out there wanted to do the work.

      I'm curious what the result would be if the force were "up & down" vs the shearing action of side to side as was done here. Thoughts?

    it would be good to record and share how long each leather stretched before tearing apart. also do you have a suggestion for buttons?

  • @jeffb957
    @jeffb957 4 года назад

    I wish you had used some sort of force measurement. It would have been helpful to know how much weight different sizes of strap could support before being damaged

    Interested as to how tubular rivets would have held up in this comparison

    • @MattWeber
      @MattWeber 4 года назад

      The same. Tubular rivets are the same construction as rapid rivets structurally, just not the use of the cap. The leather will deform around the rivet and fail first. Good tubular rivets come with a washer similar to solid copper rivets do, and washer should always be used.

      My guess is that the peened over portion would eventually pull through the hole in the leather before the leather fails.

    Thanks for the video. I'm more worried when there is a quick pull type of stress, like a dog bolting when you hold a leash that was riveted. I wouldn't use the jiffy typee rivets for anything that will be under stress

    This is terrible news! The rivets should always fail first! We can replace popped rivets, but torn leather will ruin a leather item! This is like stitching velvet fabric with upholstery thread: you should never do it, because if something is going to tear, we want it to be the thread, not the velvet. Oh, this is terrible news. But so be it.

      I'm pretty new to crafting in general, and I'm teaching myself via the internet. That's a perspective I never considered before, but it absolutely makes sense. I'm guilty of using upholstery thread for every sewing project I do, BECAUSE it's so strong.
