Review: A Cheap Markevitch Box

  • Here's yet another one of those 10-CD sets (from Intense Media) using public domain material decently transferred from LPs, some mono, some stereo. All of it has been formally reissued by the major labels on which it originated, so if you're an audiophile or a hard-core Markevitch collector you probably don't need this. On the other hand, if you want to hear what the fuss is all about--and make no mistake, Markevitch was a great, great artist--this cheap set allows you to get your feet wet at virtually no financial risk. Oh, and you get a Passover recipe with this talk, no extra charge.

Wishing a wonderful Passover to all who celebrate! That recipe at the beginning is one of my favorite things you've ever shared, Dave. ☺

Thanks for alerting me to Igor Markevitch's 'Carmen'. I'd not heard it before. It's just absolutely wonderful!

Happy Passover. And thank you for that intro. I know some people get precious about "staying on topic," but that aside brought a smile to my face (and made me really want to try out that recipe...).

Happy Passover sir! And as Dave mentioned, the sound on these boxes are fine. I have the similar Paray set (thanks to you Dave) and it is fine. So don’t hesitate if concerned, the music and detail is there. Yes Markevitch did the most incredible Debussy Danse Sacre et Danse Profane, get this set for that!

The Suez Canal wouldn't have sprung a leak if they had used charoset for mortar.

Dearest DH. Happy Passover to you. You have been a gift to us over the last year. Talking about conductor boxes we need Dorati box. I think most will be in the UMG basket. Of course, the complete Haydn symphonies will add a lot of cds

Talking about UMG. I am curious. As far as you know, how much independence is between Decca,DG etc in the UMG classical basket. Usually there is consolidation. Or Warner etc. IMHO,Sony Classical is beyond hope. Sony C will surprise you once in a while(Igor Levit) but then you also have Jonas Kauffman singing the entire Mahler DLvDE. This question goes back to your video about classical labels.

Very enjoyable and informative video. Not-so-fond memories of a hangover when I was in my late teens, brought on by drinking too much Manischewitz. Chag Pesach Sameach to you and your family.

Thanks for mentioning Markevitch the composer. Christopher Lyndon-Gee did a series of his orchestral works on Marco Polo, now on Naxos. I absolutely love L'Envol d'Icare, which even Bernstein performed (though not the original quarter-tone version; you can find LB's version in the NYP Bernstein Live set). Would be very interested in hearing a talk on Markevitch's own music. Ooh - I was typing this before the end of the video where you mentioned this very work and that Marco Polo series! Chag sameach!

I finally got around to buying this. Excellent transfers and white hot music making. An absolute bargain.

    Dear Mr David,
You are someone I would love to meet with.
I am half English/Welsh, and the other half Norwegian. I have known only two Jews, but loved them both very much.
My favourite musicians are Otto Klemperer, and Adolf Busch. I am an equal opportunity music enthusiast!
Best wishes from little old Herefordshire in Britain! George

Found the Concertgebouw Russian Easter Festival Overture on Qobuz. It's coupled with Kondrashin Scheherazade and Markevitch Capriccio Espagnol with LSO. The performance is great, but what really got me was the quality of the recording. I really felt like I was in the hall. What did the Phillips engineers know that other labels didn't (don't)?

My charoset recipe is just the same. It’s my favorite Passover food. We also like to eat as much as humanly possible as a side dish. As for this box, sounds like it’s worth a go given the low price.

    Dear Mr Hurwitz!
I would like to know if you own every single recording of classical music that has been made since the beginning? Or at least heard them. If not how many do you estimate in %
    eg. 90 %.
    Best wishes Fred.

Might there be a collection of recordings conducted by Joseph Krips that you could review? I have yet to encounter a dud under his baton. Artur Rubinstein said that Krips knew little about conducting- yet my favorite Beethoven piano concerto cycle features the two working splendidly together.

Dave, can you help me? I have some of these bargain boxes and most are very good. The LP transfers are fine. However, I've had a couple where the LP transfers are terrible with no attempt to clean up clips, pops and swishes. Is this box decently transferred? I'm not an audiophile and buy LP transfers from companies such as Pristine, Rediscovery and Klassic Haus and find them very good indeed. Thoughts on the Markevitch please? Thanks in advance and keep up the good work.

Sorry, but I don't know what you're asking. I already said the transfers are good, but you get what you pay for...

    • @bannan61

@@DavesClassicalGuide Maybe my question was a bit wishy washy. Sorry for that. What I mean is are these just LP's copied straight to CD with no attempt to get rid of the clicks and pops or have obvious clicks, pops, scratches and swishes removed or at least minimised. For example, I do my own vinyl transfers but they have all the vinyl issues still there. A professional transfer company would use the same LP but remove the vinyl artefacts.
