Thanks for clearing this up Lucy. It has put me off considering buying a flat, so job done from the politicians point of view. We have a massive problem in the UK with foreign investors buying off plan appartments and then they sit empty until they cash in. My kids have no chance of ever buying in London, not that I would want them to as it is a massive dump now. Cant wait to visit Spain again soon. Keep up the good work.
Same here in Ireland, banning Airbnb would be a good start.. We have a government here who house foreign nationals with state of the art modular homes, also hotel accommodation a lot of them coming from safe countries and a high percentage those coming into the country are arriving without passports and other documents This has to stop, this is a ticking time bomb. Poland and Hungary are taking drastic action and it's working.
Just like Hitler did in the 1930s, Germany, and look what happened then. Do you really want to live a fascist state? It's bad enough with mad man Trump and his fascist lunatic government threatening the world with his NAZI style political madness.
I wish they would do the same in the UK as half of the flats in most residential buildings sit empty because they are just investments while people struggle to find housing. Housing should be a human right, not an investment opportunity/business.
Same here in the uk. No council houses anymore they’ve been sold off and they are not rebuilding so people on a low incomes don’t stand a chance of decent housing.
Living in a popular tourist town we have the same problem.Much of the housing stock bought by incomers not as a permanent residense but purely as a holiday home. The result of this is that many of the local youth have had to move away to find affordable housing.
As you say…it’s only a proposal and is unlikely to be adopted. It’s ill thought out as a policy as tourism accounts for something in the region of 20 per cent of Spain’s GDP. Makes for good press though for Spaniards. We all know the answer to the problem - build more social houses! Super vlog Lucy.
A'reyt Lucy. There were plenty of empty properties and half finished homes on the way up to Relleu when I last visited up there. I imagined it was not the only place?
Hi Lucy i hope they do bring some form of tax on these homes .i wish it would happen in the UK where millions of people can't afford any kind of property and millions have two or more. Many places south of Alicante are like ghost towns for large parts of the year due to properties owned by non residents and it reminds in the 60s and 70s Irish people living in England used to own properties in Ireland and it had the same effect so Lucy i hope this Tax happens in some form in the UK and Spain simply out of Fairness to ordaniary hard working people. All the Best Lucy. David 😊
Hey Lucy, any chance of doing a top twenty of cleanest toilets in Beni’s top spots because quite often there’s no soap in most of them. I love Benidorm and wouldn’t go anywhere else and luv yer vids but 😅
If Spanish local and national Government's invested some of the taxes they do recieve in social housing instead of lining their own pockets and wasteful projects, maybe just maybe more social housing could be made available.
Very informative, in Wales we have similar issues with 2nd home or AirbandB. Higher local taxes are being implemented but not at such a high rate that possibly could come to Spain
❤something needs to be done about outsiders comming and just after getting income from holiday lets, when there are hotels and B&B❤ every holiday let is one less for propper renting
This is great for the local Spanish population. The UK has the same problems. Spanish citizens are struggling due to the rising cost of housing. This, alongside the other measure to stop new airbnb licenses is going to relieve pressure on the housing market. Foreign investors much like in London are purchasing property to park their cash in the country. Foreigners with immense purchasing power compared to the local population are buying second homes in Spain to live in for part of the year or to rent out to tourists. 20% of all home purchases last year were by foreigners. This proposed tax is for non-EU foreigners but it's a step in the right direction. The current situation is completely unsustainable and pushes working class locals further away from the dream of ever owning their own home. It's not a solution in an of itself, Spain, again like the UK, needs to build more housing. Look at what's happened to cities like Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, and other major cities in Europe such as London or Berlin. It's a disaster.
Thanks Lucy. One thing I have noticed is the amount of empty properties particularly on the front line and off season you can tell because there are no lights on in the evening/night.I don't think its a bad thing to put off investors from wherever to stop buying them as an investment to turn into holiday rentals when you have so many who can't afford a property.Am guessing it would prove popular with voters too.
So the problem isn’t the record illegal immigrants entering Spain year on year who all need housing (free) & making the availability of cheap housing becoming more & more expensive & unattainable for the masses.
Thanks for this Lucy. Where we live (just outside Valencia) there are not many houses owned by non EU residents but there are lots of houses owned by Spanish people to use as a second home or holiday home. In August the population of many costal towns can double with people coming from inland cities like Madrid for the month. I think the government should look at a higher tax on second homes whoever owns them.
Instead of the building of new apartments and hotels, why don't the authorities insist on building new residential homes for local residents who have not been able to buy the tourist accommodation.
Hello Lucy yes Kellys ex pat services excellent . i got my house year's ago when it was a broken down wreck (running water down the walls) in fact ready for the bulldozer in fact some house did bite the dust you get the picture. a lot of Spanish have copied us now and have come back into the old town where i live they thought we where loco at first . as said in a bar one house per person not 2,3,4 which i know some have done in the past trying to cash in one house per person n that's fair
I live in Alicante and this very directly affects me as a young person trying and currently failing to get on the property ladder. The PSOE government in Spain will never do anything that would actually reduce house prices by too much, given the bulk of their 40+ year-old voters are homeowners themselves, and very interested in the value of those homes. Anyone under 35 who is left-wing voted Sumar, for all the good that did them... The end result is that homeownership has essentially become age-exclusive. The youth are never really given anything of substance, just slogans or treats like free public transport that do little to change their material conditions. Even the governments that do try and offer something, like the Valencian government offering 100% mortgages for young people, won't dare do anything that would reduce the cost of housing. Help with mortgages will just send prices even higher by adding extra demand into the system. What's needed is extra *supply* of housing, and lots of it. Spain hasn't built enough housing to absorb the increasing population since 2008.
@@clpar-k2x This issue is not exclusive to "holiday areas" by any stretch of the imagination, unless you define the entirety of Spain as one big resort. Housing has become unaffordable everywhere. In any case, why should my living in a place where there's jobs mean a two-income household cannot afford to buy a 2-bed flat?
With the prospect of increased property taxes even if the full 100% hike isn’t implemented, it’s likely to cause a crash in the property market in Spain. You'd be crazy to buy now.
If the policy is to make more property available by reducing the number of second homes then shouldn't it apply to everybody who buys for that purpose and not just those from particular country? Could a savvy purchaser get round it by setting up a Spanish company and then buying the property in the name of that company?
If the Spanish people could not afford to buy or rent before how can they buy or rent now and if things keep going up people will find elsewhere to buy and holiday

Always informative. Thank you. Happy Wednesday.

Yes that’s true, many as half houses owned by corrupt foreigners.

Did you voted leave or remain?Because now it is going to make a real difference
Hi Lucy

Same as where my dad is from in Scotland . Family homes bought up by investors then families have nowhere to live . Local communities die
Excellent report balance fact based content as always thank you. Unlike some channels who focus on gimmicks😂
Thanks
Love your videos Lucy, my dream is to live in Spain I have an Irish passport will that make a difference as part of EU ?
yes, it doesn't apply to you
You need to be a resident before you buy and you need to have an address in Spain to become resident? So people will have to rent b4 they buy.
❤something needs to be done about outsiders comming and just after getting income from holiday lets, when there are hotels and B&B❤ every holiday let is one less for propper renting

Mass immigration eats up the social housing while locals cant afford to but on the private market .
why provide social housing when they are happy to turn a blind eye to squatters living in holiday homes etc
Thanks Lucy. Sssshh keep it down you’ll be accused of being far right !
A radical thought, the government could build more social housing. Crazy i know. 🤪
One of the 12 proposals 👍
Hello Lucy, very informative as usual, that problem seems to happen in another Continent too.
Just need to look at Edinburgh, wish they would do the 100% tax there, most of the accommodation is now air b a b, none for people needing housing
It’s hard to disagree with the Spanish governments motives, but will it drive down prices I don’t think so..
seems simple ban Airb&b. also raise the minimum wage to make renting and buying affordable
Thanks for this Lucy.

And obviously the UK will reciprocate
This will not help the housing problem
Arrogant to think Spain to think they would last 5 mins without tourism
I'll have to get a Caravan on Villasol
Just 28k homeless in Spain, there's 354k in England alone.
😮 seriously? wow
@ yes sadly a Google search will show you this
@@davidevans267 That's really shocked me 😪

It’s the same for non eu not just the Brit’s , and it’s a possible increase on the taxes when buying the house not the house price !!
