Could be taken as both. The premise of the song is describing the relationship & how it fell apart, but she is singing about how it wasn’t part of the plan God had for them and the song talks about or eludes to the need to let go & move on. At least that’s my opinion.

Shaheen J Weird story---I always liked Nelly but only found out about the song because of Kroger ha ha. I was shopping one day and heard it on the speakers. I stopped and listened close so I could remember a few lyrics, went home, put them into Google---and found the song. Same thing with Again and Again by Jewel (you might like that one).

It was the last music video of Loose. The end of an era that cemented her into pop star olymp. It's 12 years old now, how time flies. Back as a teenager I didn't find this song and video too special. Now listening to it again it touches me so deeply. Nelly you did that. You may be a smaller celebrity by now but no one will ever forget what you did with this album.

When I was little this song always made me think of my dad. he used to be my best friend and suddenly he never had time for me. He worked all the time. these lyrics described those feelings so good. I used to cry to this when I was 12. I'm almost 20 now...

I remember listening to this when I was just a kid, about 11 or 12. I recall always watching the video on vh1s top music videos but I never really understood its meaning. Now that I'm older, 18, this song's lyrics mean so much to me and I finally understand it. It's soothing to listen to after you lose someone you love. Beautiful song. Nelly is such a talented artist.

27/11/2007...first time I heard this song onn 94.7FM Highveld Stereo. I was about to embark on my first roadtrip for a Company I had just joined, from Sebokeng to Fauresmith (SOuth Africa). It was around 04:30am...I fell in love with it. And for many years that would follow, it has been a source of reflection for me, for all the hardships and misunderstandings in relationships and other complex human engagements. What A Classic Gem. I had this on repeat too many times when I first heard this on the album.didn't know they ever had a video til now.great video great song,sad but good.the most meaningful song I ever heard from her IMO.
I remember singing this song when I chose to serve God in the midst of my relationship was falling apart. This song is deep.
Personally I think about "God" in this song not as any specific figure, but more loosely as a metaphorical force. "Back in God's hands" means to me that the love is no longer under our control, and whatever we try to do will not influence it anyhow. Lyric-wise, it sounds like a surrender, but Nelly's powerful voice also gives me a sense of acceptance. The relationship is falling apart and floating away, but there is hope that this is for the best and fate has its own reason. The closure leaves us all bare, regretful and vulnerable, but it's also the beginning of another journey. Nothing we can do about it without realizing that it all is "part of the plan".

English version is nice, but this song in Spanish is BEAUTIFUL. I think there are songs not meant to be done in other languages. Another example is "Fuerte" feat Concha Buika, the English version is kind of mediocre, but in Spanish is pure gold! Nelly's vocals anyways, will never let anyone down! ❤️
