I would love to see a well-known musician drop one of these in the middle of a song just to fuck with the general public and watch the world lose their minds
I'm pretty sure Mr Bungle have (perhaps unwittingly?) used this technique for segues and slick tempo changes. Just throw on their self-titled debut. It's riddled with them.
Jacob Collier also has attempted to create this sonic phenomenon, in the song, called "Dun Dun Ba Ba." Video: ruclips.net/video/n_9J7QU-uGE/видео.html You can read the description and he claims he was inspired by the Shepard Tone, in which he wanted to also apply this same concept to a falling down/speeding up rhythm as well. From the description of the video, "I have been obsessed with the illusion of the ‘Shepard Tone’ for many years now, and I’ve always wanted to have a go at a ‘Shepard Groove’ - i.e. a groove that never stops speeding up. It’s a pretty careful illusion to construct, where one needs to bury the exact groove at half speed within the groove from the off, and so in order to pull it off I called up one of the greatest musical forces in my life, my friend and great teacher Barak Schmool (the man who opened doors for me with Negative Harmony, just intonation, wonky grids, and so much more), to assemble a circle of the greatest Cuban drummers living in London, to pull it off. We sat in a small room in Elephant & Castle, and recorded the groove at two tempos, which I then glued together."
I wrote a line of script for my BBC Master computer which used every single sound it was capable of making. The result made me feel extremely happy, and this Risset Beat has the same effect on me.
this kind of things makes me laugh so hard btw. a similar effect is used at the end of Echoes from Pink Floyd with the choirs, the Shepard scale I think
Such a Pink Floyd thing to do. The Shepard illusion at the end of Echoes sounds particularly creepy because it's seemingly made with nothing but a choir of male and female voices
I can clearly hear a point where the loop repeats, every time. It may not be an objective point, but maybe just an artefact of my personal hearing range and perception, but anyway, the effect is the same; it simply *doesn't* sound like "never-ending increase", but rather, clearly "a loop of increase and then restart from the beginning".
It seems to be similar to the design of the shepherd tone where once the beat reaches a certain tempo in the decelerando stage, a double time version slower fades in. The key is in the fade in/fade out execution.
Well, I didn't know that. This is the same trick as the Shepard tone. When the sound is "raising" (while it's not really raising), the lower frequences (the low octave) are silent at the begining of the loop and get louder in louder as it "raises" and re-goes silent when the loop restarts. For the accute frequences, it's the exact opposite. And for the middle octave, nothing changes (same loudness in the loop). All the octaves raising in term of note and all going back to their initial point at the end of the loop, it gives us that impression of infinite raising. But I never thought about doing it with the tempo of a music.
Jesus Christ listening to this makes me feel uncomfortable... This makes me feel the same as when i look at those images that look normal at first, and then the longer you look, the more you realize that the image is just a jumble of vaguely formiliar shapes and patterns
I just came back to listen to the stupid sounding melody again. I hate it but love it.
Yeah, it makes me panic but i also love it

I can't remember why I'm subscribed to this channel, but I'm liking it!
same here
I'll take what I can get. :-)

i think its panic
@@jaysonho3825 yeah, but why is it?
Mathematics is truly beautiful!!! It’s so wonderful how it permeates EVERYTHING THAT EXISTS, including these auditory illusions.
I want a long version of this dude!!! So cool

Good call -- that's an eerie shepard tone.

ive watched this video so many times and i wish i had an mp3 of the beat
I've been working on starting up a youtube series about all of my projects... and I want to use this music for the theme.... it hurts my brain. :D
I hereby grant you permission to do so (for that youtube series) if you want to. :-) Maybe link here in the description, if you do.
this shit bops
"Barber Pole" is such a good analogy for explaining how this effect works
If you listen closely, you can hear the sound transitions.

I can hear it both ways. Kind of like the stairs optical illusion, is it viewed from above or below? both.
fascinating, keep it up!

Behold, "Anxiety" the musical.
Where is an infinite loop of the first slowing beat
I'll consider uploading one some time. :-)
@@CaseyConnor have your considered finally? Please...
@@CaseyConnor I second this
@@CaseyConnor Are you going to upload it soon?
@@martink592 No immediate plans but I'll reply here again if they form. Pretty busy this summer. :-)
I need a infinite version of the slow down
Anyone else think the illusion doesn't really work ?
I can hear as much a tempo accelerating fading out as a recurring half tempo fading in.
Yesssssss you're back!!!!!
this is what a panic attack sounds like
Make this 10 hours and this will finish, or not.
There is a great rap tune called " them that's not" by j live. The intro is brilliant. Kind of like this idea
These kind of audio illusions can stress the people. It's a continuous loop.
Except me
why does that beat actually slap though
The Risset Beat is great if you want to know what psychedelics do to your sense of hearing but you don’t actually want to be high.
I actually enjoyed this music,I kinda wanna listen to it on Spotify, am I ok
wow that's just unnerving...
Is it just me or does it sound really creepy
agree
Just focus on the bottom part..u will see nothing changed
i like this version of the beat the most but i can't find it anywhere else
According to his reply in another comment, it's a part of a song he made years ago, made into a Risset beat for demonstration purposes.
Can I sample that beat?
Maybe! We talking commercial use or what?
I mean, I just want to listen to it, either just like it is, or just at normal speed
Could this be performed live?
Yes... it would be tricky, but AFAIK some have recorded human-played versions of this kind of thing.
If sonic. Exe is trying to catch tails then the music will get faster
If sonic. Exe is not anymore then this sound comes slower
Is it only me that likes this melody..?
I like it too but the faster version is better
Good example for viewers
IT Works , On Taylor ! ;) ... Shh ! :)
It just sounds so.....so...wrong.
Trippy
This is the same principle as the stairs in Mario 64
the beat does get slower, just not as slow as the tempo
Then tails sees friends death
¿...but can this be used as the
intro theme for your channel...?
How is this actually done?
You can check the video description for links to the scripts used.
It's like the Shepard
I saw the blue writing turn purple
Kinda creepy
someone do this with a amen break
For some reason this is creepy.
