Today there's something called Firefly fire starter, which fits in the toothpick hole. It's a lot easier than lighting a fire with the magnifying glass and it fits any 91mm Victorinox knife, not necessarily the Swiss Champ. Excellent video anyway. Thank you.
Thanks for letting me know. thinking of getting a Swisschamp or other Victorinox int he future and the toothpick doesn't seem too useful to me. It's an okay thing to have but having the option of the fire starter instead of the toothpick would-be nice!
Thank you very much for the video response. When I tried to begin a fire with the magnifying lens of my Victorinox Explorer I used like a tinder: natural cotton, pine needles and paper. I think that the magnifying lens of Vicks, aren't so powerful to burn these tinder and the trick is to use a good tinder like you Simond, I got it! Thanks again!
Beautiful video. Love the tactful response, the music, clear demo, just hope that fire got stamped out. In my experience, I’ve found that the main factors are combustibility of tinder (best if pre charred), stability of beam (must be very stable), focus of beam (pinpoint is best), length of exposure/time, and of course intensity of source (very bright day w/ unobstructed strong sunlight).
I'd add 'collimation of the beam,' too, which is very difficult to maintain on a pile of, say, dry grass. That "pinpoint" is actually a very small picture of the sun itself. If it looks like a comet, much of the heat is dispersed. I also think that a lighter is a more dependable option! In COLD climates, though, I'd opt for a Zippo -style lighter. 🙂
WOW it works it works!! lol I did it. :) I just got the Swisschamp because my husband thinks everyone should carry a small tool box with them at all times lol. And we have set about finding uses, new and old and most recently using the magnifying glass to start a fire. And it works!! :)
That was pretty bad ass sir. Used to play with Swiss Army knives as a kid, and as a young man only used leathermans and gerbers while serving. Seeing this video brings back a healthy respect for these tools.
This is a fantastic video i sometimes EDC a very old Swiss champ SOS kit on my Belt there fantastic i to sometimes use the Mag glass for 🔥 🌡️ making I've also got a 🧭 🧷 Mag glass all in one fantastic little EDC kit thanks so much for sharing this one with us 👍🏻
AWESOME! i am going to be buying a champ soon-ish I saw one at our local watch fixer store and I really want to get it :"( they had it there pretty cheap too! Well hopefully I can buy it before anyone else gets it
I use sticks or rocks to hold the SAK up and position the tinder in the right spot under it. That way it stays completely still and flames faster without having to blow too much.
-Open your *useless🙄* fish descaler. -Open your magnifier lens. -Place tinder -Shove descaler into the ground, so the MLens' focal point is just above the ground. This removes the wind/shaking/moving/human component from the equation, helping create an ember.
@@kahuna1247 Might be my more used tool in my Swisschamp. I fix medical equipment, and the scaler works as a long Philips driver (unless the screw is super torqued down), the rounded dehooker cleans under my nails, I can check diameters, bolt lengths, head sizes, and tire tread depths, and numerous other uses. So, no, not useless, to me. To most other people, maybe.
the old magnifying glass (with silver on the outside instead of clear) will be easier to start fires with, the new clear ones are 5x magnification where the old ones were 8x
I find it easier with lower magnifications, to be honest. Larger lens of X1.5 to X2 seems to work best for me. For some reason, higher magnifications produce smaller light beams, which are more difficult to hold steady and only heat up a tiny area. It may also be something to do with the lens size, which in this case is tiny.
If they change the lens material to glass and make the lens slightly thicker it could have a tiny focal point concentrating the sunlight and making process slightly faster.
@enpemar No problem. Even the most powerful lens will have a hard time setting things on fire straight away. You can only make stuff smoulder and then blow the ember into flames. Paper and needles will catch fire readily from an open flame but they aren't the best materials when it comes to catching sparks or focusing sunlight.
Thanks. Yeah, I think all all those multi tool lenses are plastic due to weight saving and safety concerns. It doesn't seem to matter. It just needs to be clear enough to be able to focus light. I've even seen people use pieces of ice that way to start a fire.
I now regret even more losing my Victorinox explorer that I got when I was a boy. I selected it precisely for the glass for fire starting. i could never make it work.
good work man..you have the most quality tool(victorinox)but you need the best tool to work it-the Knowledge..i can understand only the punkwood from the tinders..please could you write me with a comment the 2 others tinders materials??

when I was a child, we were always trying to start a fire with a magnifying glass. We burnt a lot of holes in leaves and paper, and even wood, by got nowhere with actual flames. the reason is, we didn't know about charred material and forming an ember. Why did it take me 50 years to learn this?
+Steve Brettell LOL I remember myself trying the same thing as a kid. Never worked. It seems so easy but even finding the right type of punk wood without someone experience around is pretty damn hard. They're not all the same.
Czy jesteś Polakiem? Do you have sunshine in Poland? During do many bad years, I feared the sun just wanted away. Jestem 66 lat , więc przeżył , i studiował , większość tegorocznych okupacji , od 19 do 20 wieku .

Simon's Discoveries he means you cannot just start fire with only the lens not bringing specially prepared tinder into the wood first. Could just as good just take a lighter or firesteal imstead of a big box of coal or tinder. Its a she I think. I you are on traveltrip and break down with car in woods and forgot steel and lighter then you I think cant start fire with just the lens alone. Maybe but if not it would be a shame and sadly would render this lens in a real survival situation useless

At this point they may as well put a bic lighter on a sak. I don’t smoke 🚭. But I have many bic lighters, they r small and reliable.
You made it look pretty easy Simon. Knowledge is truly the best tool in the bush.
+Chip Sanford Thanks. It definitely does pay of to practice it a few time :)
Have to love those more experienced viewers that know more about everything. Great video

MIQU MIQU Congratulations! Your husband sounds reasonable ;) I also carry 'a small tool box' with me :)

+b0Lobattali0n Thank you. I use both of these too and whilst leatherman tools seem more heavy duty, victorinox seems more user friendly.

Beautiful. I tried to light a fire with my swiss champ but it didn't work so I have up. I'll try again like you did.
thanks for the video.
Good luck and thanks for watching.
Great video! Thanks! I will definitely try it. 👍

Supurb video. just to make sure, my swiss champ has a plastic lens. Is your lens plastic to because i thought it had to be glass to start fire.
Thanks. Yeah, I think all all those multi tool lenses are plastic due to weight saving and safety concerns. It doesn't seem to matter. It just needs to be clear enough to be able to focus light. I've even seen people use pieces of ice that way to start a fire.

So after this video, i cannot belive i got smoke from a very dry leaf. I'm hooked, I'll practice every day till i get fire 🤗

Try Mullen with and mugwort two other good tinders.

+Steve Brettell Tak, jestem Polakiem and yes, we have sunshine in Poland :) At least we did last time I visited.
Cześć
Mam propozycje :

Hehe. Pozdrawiam :-)
+Bizon MG a mi akurat muzyka nie podeszła...
Does that work on fast wood?
+Steve Brettell I don't think it would.
