A consumerist mindset leads one to make unnecessary/empty purchases just for the sake of buying stuff. I will say the teenagers in my life are a heck of a lot more Socially aware and emotionally aware to sensitive topics than I ever was as a teenager. I’m guessing these people “trying” to protect teens from traumatic topics hasn’t talked to a teenager lately or are still unwilling to have the tough emotional conversations that teenagers are aware of and live everyday.

regarding trauma in YA: I grew up very privileged and encountered a lot of really tough issues for the first time in YA books in my early teen years. There are still scenes that I can remember reading very vividly and yes, at the time, they were really shocking and unsettling. However, I was a more informed and empathetic kid because of it, and I am wildly thankful that I didn't have to experience those things first hand to understand them.
Honestly about the book haul thing: Its their money and my money. Like if they want to buy books and get rid of books. Let them. Their money isn't hurting anyone. If we stop buying books, there will be less books being published.
Thank you so much for doing these videos! I know it must take a lot of time and research but I really am learning a lot! You have a great personality which makes themes so entertaining!
Also, I just wanted to add one more controversy involving books in Brazil which instigated earlier this year the govnearment wanted to make books even more expensive then what they already are, because according to them, books are “only read by the rich population and they would give free books to the poor people “, but everybody knows those books would be filled with propaganda and books should not be seen as a luxury item. We’re also going through this crisis in which some of the biggest bookstores (Saraiva and Cultura) are bankrupt.
About the ableism and buying books thing: This is obviously just my personal experience, but hopefully this helps explain things. I have ADHD and I tend to read physical books (as opposed to audiobooks) pretty slowly. It’s hard for me to sit and focus on a book for long periods of time, so I can take a few weeks to a few month to get through one book. When my anxiety is bad it can take even longer. I also don’t have the best memory, and tend to forget about things if I don’t see them for a while. So if there’s a book I really want to read I tend to buy it so I can have it on my shelf and see it. The combination of these things, which are part of my ADHD, mean that I end up buying books before finishing all the books I already have. Expecting everyone to finish all the books they own before buying new ones as a norm isn’t very realistic for people who don’t read quickly or who tend to jump between books rather than reading one at a time straight through. Sometimes the conversation about consumerism and wastefulness can come off like people judging others for their reading habits which can feel shitty for those of us who “struggle” with getting things done.
As another viewpoint, I also have ADHD, and have a collectionist mindset, am a serial hobbyist, and have been involved in many a hobby community. There's an acronym that I can't recall specifically, but the gist is "a stash that will outlive you": essentially having such a large stash that if you continue to consume at your current rate you will die before running out. I think that certain neurodiversities (using the term lightly here because I know that some with ADHD or autism hate the word) can increase your chances of developing a magpie approach to hobbies with consumable goods, but I think it's a bit of a reach to equate calling out the perceived consumeristic characteristics of that hobby as ablism. I know lots of people with ADHD that don't collect things, and I know people who are collectors and are neurotypical. To me, they aren't directly tied. And for some, part of the enjoyment of the hobby is in the collecting. People need to just learn to let people live their own lives. Especially if said person isn't creating great financial risk for themselves with a shopping addiction. And even if they are, it's still not the responsibility of randoms on the internet to call them out for it.
Also, have you tried getting an ereader? I love the feel of physical books, but I also take much longer to read physical books than I do audio. I got a kindle paperwhite this weekend and I've now read more physical (non-graphic) books in the last 5 days than I have in the last 3-4 months. Something about the small lightweight size, easier portability, and ability to read in the dark help get past the mental hurdle that I have with paper books. I don't feel like I need to set the scene and carve out time like I feel like I need to with paper books. It's like audiobooks now where I can whip it out while waiting for the water to boil, or in bed, after my husband has gone to sleep, or while standing outside while my dog uses the bathroom. And since I am pulling it out more, I'm getting sucked in more often and can read for like an hour straight. And even if I do get distracted, I'm still getting more progress in the books than I would if it was a paper book, so I don't feel this added pressure, which with paper books could lead to me feeling guilty and reading less. Especially since I read most of my books from the library, so there's always this feeling that I am preventing someone else from reading since I'm taking so long. I tried doing just the kindle app on my phone but that was even worse than paper books. I would immediately get distracted, my brain would nag me to check all the normal phone time things, or scream that I have to look up this one unimportant thing right now, and maybe you should start reading more reviews on robot vacuums or add to your Christmas list, or remember how your one variety of beans aren't doing so well? Instead of reading this book, you should do a bunch of research on that strain and its growing habits and when the best time to plant them in your zone is. And then even if I could force myself to stay in the kindle app and read, it was usually at night in the dark and it would hurt my eyes after a few minutes and I would give up.
Just hopping in here to concur. My read of the situation is that the argument is it’s ableist to shame people for owning a bunch of books that they haven’t read. I don’t think the argument is that it’s inherently ableist to shame people for buying a bunch of books though. The two are pretty similar so it’s hard to distinguish. 🤷🏻♀️
The prison thing. So it depends on your state. For instance, in Washington where I live, specific non-profits are able to donate books to prisons. That said, a private citizen like you or me can’t. Long story short, given most booktubers are small by RUclips standards and don’t necessarily have a ton of resources, giving excess books to their library or local charity shop makes the most sense. Selling to a used bookstore is fine with me too. Selling to fans? Thaaaaats where I start cringing.
The whole “too traumatic” for YA thing drives me crazy! I totally agree with trauma not caring about your age. It can be explained at an age appropriate level or connect at an age appropriate level. But damn. Teens are doing drugs, having sex, witnessing violence or being a victim of violence. Books can be a great way to cope.
As an international reader, I thank you so much for acknowledging the privilege US and UK etc readers have, and acknowledging the issues we have, it was necessary and I appreciate it so much
Thanks for all the tea, Jess, I don't have social media so this series is always very informative. The publishing merger made me cringe when I first heard about it the other week but I didn't realize how far reaching the consequences are going to be.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad I can keep you up to date on everything. The publishing merger is awful, to me. The US is so big and will only have 4 major publishing houses? UGH

Thank you so much for talking about books not being available in other countries- it's honestly a problem for me too (I'm in a Slavic country) - sometimes if I want a book, and this happened multiple times, I can only get an English version that costs about 3x the price of a translated book and is only available to ppl who can read fluent english. It's not talked about at all so I appreciate it!
the brazilian publishing industry IS quite a mess nowadays, indeed. I'm glad that thread reached so far in the book community, people needed to know about this, embarrassing as it is.
That audiobook was TERRIBLE!!! And I feel so bad for the Brazilian readers that are paying absurd money for poor quality books. Hopefully with authors behind them the publishing company will fix it

LOVED this video! Nigel's face says it all haha. I agree and hope the merger doesn't happen--last year the merger between Cengage and McGraw-Hill was blocked, and they are two huge education publishers, so maybe there is some hope (but also yeah...America, eye roll). Good point that as consumers we need to pay attention to small presses and spend our money wisely.
im a teenager, and while i cant speak for all of us, ya books should not be censored. if a book contains heavier topic, add adequate trigger warnings at the front of the book so the reader is able to decide if they can handle reading the topic.
A local Geek Community has a toy drive and they also collect books for incarcerated women. In the suggested genres list it said true crime is really popular. That's something I would never have guessed so that suggests to me that unless you're actually asking them no one really knows what people want to read in prison. I hadn't seen most of these conversations so I really appreciate the update!
I know this video is hella old lolll but I recently found you & I’m watching everything so I’m gonna comment anyway. I am autistic & I’ve always been a huge book lover/book collector. So here’s what I inferred from the tweet saying that being against book hauls is ableist: I think they were calling it ableist because being avid collectors is a very common thing in the autistic community. Additionally, a lot of us have 1 or 2 “special interests”. These are sort of like hobbies, except brain scans have shown that the areas of our brains that light up when engaging with our special interests are the same areas that light up when a neurotypical sees a loved one. So the special interests are very important to us (speaking broadly, no 2 autistic experiences are the exact same). So I say all that to say: I interpret the ableism comment to mean that whoever called the book hauler out should take into consideration that if an autistic person is an avid book collector it might mean wayyyy more to them than it does to your average neurotypical consumer & not recognizing that difference could feel ableist. All that being said…this is something I really struggle with because unfortunately I can’t afford to haul as many books as I would like to & books are definitely my #1 special interest. I do know I have justified overspending before because of how important it is to me and it’s just a hard and very personal line to figure out. Which is really what it all comes down to, like you’ve said and others have said - it’s personal. And the more time we spend pointing the finger at each other, the less time we spend figuring out how to make the people with ACTUAL power create meaningful change lollll
Thank you just imagine when some of these people when to jail and still didn't have a court dated or couldn't make the bond and now stuck to severe time. Depends on when they went as a minor and then went to jail as a adult unfortunately they mind didn't develop and pretty much still think like a teen. I still send ya from time to time ....
I totally agree to not do something if it doesn’t bring you joy. Reading a book I own brings me joy because I don’t feel the anxiety of keeping up with a deadline with a library loan. In contrast I only listen to library audiobooks 🤷♀️ is it the best use of my money for me? Yes. My library is my safe space and supports authors so they can write more books for others to borrow! However, as a bookstagrammer, I feel obligated to not list books for sale on my platform. No one should ever feel bad about the medium of reading they use. The point is that we all love reading!
I know I'm late to the party by multiple months, but I can explain the ableism a bit. The best I can do is use myself as an example. I've got severe ADHD, which makes me incredibly forgetful. It also, along with one of my mental illnesses, makes me incredibly impulsive, especially around things that I'm passionate about and that bring me comfort. So I amass a LOT of books and constantly have a LONG "currently reading" list because I impulsively buy new books due to being passionate about the genre/author or am excited about discovering a new series or its a series that already brings me comfort and I want to chase that feeling. However, I'm not able to remember how many books I'm already in the middle of until I get home and physically see my pile of books (for example I'm currently in the middle of 15 books, but most of them I haven't touched in many months, not because of a lack of interest in them, but due to getting distracted by the new books I'm constantly buying). Is this an issue that I'm working on coping with better? Yes. But no matter how many coping skills I learn to use, I'm still going to have episodes of impulsive buying of books because of two of my disabilities. It's ableist to criticize/look down on my purchasing habits around this because it's literally due to my brain being wired differently, which is something I can't change about myself. Let me know if you need any clarification because I'd be happy to further explain it if that would help 😊
Um, excuse me? A funny and informative wrap up of book related news from the social media sphere that I’m not on? Yes please and thank you where has this been all my life?! SUBSCRIBED!
Something I've noticed in the past couple of years is that soon as the masses learn a 'big word' they proceed to use it in every sentence despite it not being in context. At this point, ableism and other such words hold little to no value as a cause of becoming buzzwords.
How hard would it have been to find someone with a Southern Black woman accent to narrate the book? This is a legit question. Because in my head it can’t be that hard. I listened to the audio clip several times and couldn’t stop cackling in disbelief. And that comment about people in prison’s reading preferences just wasn’t it 🥴 People in prison are as varied as the people not in prison and so logically reading preferences would be just as varied and diverse as well. Nigel wasn’t here for the video, but he’s super cute anyway. OMG the high five at the end…my heart!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Seriously, like the author herself was RIGHT THERE. WHAT THE HELL. You can write out this thread apologizing and knowing what to do next...well why didn't you think of that to start?? Nigel is fed up with publishing and the nonsense of whites 😂
It’s okay Nigel, I’m very nervous too. All the time. It’s called ✨anxiety✨. I’m white and I’m tired of our antics. This is only tangental related, but I’m from a part of Ohio that’s considered Appalachia, and the accents in audiobooks of people from that area about drive me insane. Like Ghost Wood Song, for example. I can’t deal. It’s like a caricature of the culture. Hate it. So, I can absolutely see why that author would be so annoyed.
Also, I buy books all of the time. I own hundreds of books I haven't yet read. I don't have any mental health condition and kind of resent the implication that it must have to do with mental health issues. I just buy things because I want to and have the money to do so. 🤷🏼♀️ I slowed down and stopped for the most part and am focusing on what I own, but I'm not financially unstable or otherwise negatively impacted from buying books I want to buy! I was donating read books to my local library but they stopped during COVID so now I have a bunch of books waiting to be donated somewhere.
@@JessOwens I hope so! Many of the books are very lightly used and you can barely tell I read the hardcovers! My family thinks I should try to sell them but I feel like donating is always nice, especially to libraries.
I love collecting books (having a room full of books, as if it were my own private library, is one of my dreams since childhood), but I don't have much money, so I buy a lot of secondhand books. I think buying secondhand books is really good, specially if you buy lots of books, because you are recycling and helping small businesses (I visit small secondhand bookshops regularly). Idk, if people feels bad about buying books because of consumerism, this seems like a less bad option to me. (Edited because of grammar).
I’m from Brazil and when I was 13, I wanted to read the books I saw the booktube community talk about so passionately. Unfortunately, I never had great experiences with translations. Now I’m 16 and proficient in english (according to Cambridge) and I just feel awful for those, especially my friends, who get less than perfect translations and end up giving up on reading in general :(
It depends on contracts but there have been cases where authors/publishers were able to pull the localization rights from foreign publishers since there is usually a clause that forbids any major changes during translation process etc. One of the recent examples is V.E. Schwab cancelling the initial localization deal in Russia due to erasure of LGBTQ+ scenes during translation (which breached the aforementioned clause in the contract) and re-selling the rights to a different Russian publisher.
I live in Sweden, and mainly read English books so the Brazil thread spoke to me. A regular international paperback usually starts somewhere above 15$ if you want good quality and not a small print. Crazy, especially finding out thats like the regular price for hardbacks in the US.😔 not to mention the shipping costs. oh god the shipping costs
That audible deal hacked me off so much - so many independent authors that I have reviewed have been dealing with this and they have actually been IN THE RED with audible...
The comment about prisons/jails makes me mad for a few reasons. 1. Some prisoners might be at the reading level of most YA books and some may still even be in the age range as those booktubers. What they would or wouldn't like to read is as variable as it is in any other member of the population. Don't assume the personality, age, or education of prisoners based on your own presumptions of what the average inmate is like. 2. Books do need to be sent from publishers, and there are huge restrictions on what can be sent. Many institutions have essentially shut the programs down. 3. Saying that without knowing key facts is not only trying to call someone out for not donating openly, but also calling someone out for something they obviously don't do themselves. Don't throw stones in glass houses. 😒 And just, wow. I can't fathom knowing so little about something and trying to make such a derogatory statement like that. They should read about the prison and jail system and what actually makes up that population. Wow.
Right, that statement was wrong for so many reasons. I didn't know how restrictive it is to send books to prisons but again, I didn't make a blanket statement on Twitter about it lol
About the Penguin & Simon and Schuster thing, I was talking to someone who was in publishing in India and people are already getting fired... so, it's going to be affecting the people working in these two publishing houses quite a bit in the next few months.
So I was on a medication for depression a couple of years back and it absolutely decimated my impulse control. I gained 50+ pounds from binge-eating and also bought 150+ books. Collecting those books even though I'd probably never get through all of them brought me happiness at a time I desperately needed it, and to this day I look upon my collection fondly. One thing that depression made me quit was reading (which I've loved to do since I was able to read), so seeing all my books is kind of a reminder that I kicked depression's sorry ass and I can do it again. Maybe they felt accusing someone of consumerism and subtly berating them while doing so without knowing the reason behind it is abelist?
I'm glad Audible is changing their policy. I'm definitely guilty of returning books after I've read them - they were always books I didn't care much about but that doesn't matter as I listened to the whole book. I didn't mind ripping off Amazon, but had no idea I was taking money from the Authors, so never doing that again even if Audible is changing things (I plan on switching to LibroFM anyway, so I guess it's mute). Also, re listening to the samples - they don't always give a good idea of how the narration is, especially if there are multiple narrators. I've had to return books I've listened to and enjoyed for a good hour because the second narrator finally showed up and I could not stand their voice - doesn't happen often but does occasionally with multiple narrators.
YES! I'm not from Brazil, but I've found cheaper US hardcover special editions than translated paperbacks in my country :( I know authors don't get any say in this, but the main reason I started to read in english was to avoid spoilers. By the time we had a published translation of the first book , the sequel (or sequels) already came out in the original lenguage.
The DMCA on ready player two have been lifted (because they were not valid DMCAs) I made a video about the entire thing as well and included the excerpt before it got deleted and gave my (trans) perspective on the whole "nonbinary sex" debacle

Ableism could tie in to book hauls perhaps for people who need books in specific formats (audiobooks, braille, large print) etc, and how those can sometimes be more expensive. Maybe? It's a stretch but that's the connection I can make (as a disabled person myself).
I typically only buy books for my daughter or books that I am certain that I’ll reread. Mostly, I get books from the library because buying a bunch a books I won’t read is something I consider wasteful.
HAHAHAHAHAHA OHMYGOD THAT AUDIO CLIP FROM THE WHITE MAN READING WHAT A BLACK WOMAN WROTE WAS JUST...WOW. I am torn between being upset and laughing hysterically at the IDIOCY. I played it for my partner and watching his face change when the audio started playing was priceless. I definitely buy books from the big publishers, but I am trying very hard to read and promote indie publishers. I tried to start a thing this year highlighting a different small press each month (I am bad at things lately though), and will continue to do it next year. I think watching this is going to make me make an even BIGGER effort to buy small.
That jail comment did not sit right with me. As far as book collecting, I like to just mind my business. Why is it my business how many books someone buys and why is it someone’s business how many books I buy? Ya know what I mean?
Okay, I have a lot of books. I love buying books, and I am very lucky and privileged to be able to buy them when I want. I also regularly clean out my shelves and take those books to a little lending library at my local park so someone else can also enjoy the fruits of my slight addiction. It's a system that works well for me.
@@JessOwens Yes! And the lending library I take my books to is right by a kid's playground, so it gets a lot of traffic and hopefully a variety of people get to enjoy some new books.
The fact that Nigel wore a collar to match your shirt shows how up for this video he was. I took a break from reading, 'When They Call You a Terrorist,' to watch some booktube. When you played the audio of that audiobook, all I could do was cover my face, thinking what Patrisse Khan-Cullors would have said if she heard that voice. Bye bye, Nigel.
I still can't believe that you can return an audiobook a year later. That would have never cross my mind about that. I would've took that as a lose if I didn't like the audio
Man, sometimes I wish there was some sort of Robin Hood type option where we can "buy" bootleg digital books and the money was split between the author and editor and all of those people but none to the publishing house. Obviously, we cant and it's illegal and a breach of contract and all that. But it's frustrating that you want to support authors but in doing so you are supporting the monopolistic publishers as well and enabling them to keep playing their games and screwing over all the people actually contributing to the creation of the books. I guess the only thing we can do is speak out and make a concerted effort to buy indie and self-published books. We need more competition, and to do that we need to show that other publishing options can give them a real run for their money. But if we completely boycott the big 5 (4), then we are hurting the authors who are getting screwed already.
My issue with books containing hard subjects and traumatic events is that it is rarely disclosed. I can certainly read them but I've worked in mental health and it was really important that some patients didn't read content including things like that (ie. lots of triggers!). If there was some kind of rating or content warning, that would be helpful for individuals who also want to avoid reading things that they know they would struggle with.
God yeah, the merger news is so icky to me as an aspiring author. The "big 5" was already such a small number ... in a few decades I could see publishing houses going the way of Disney, where one corporation owns EVERYTHING. not a happy thought.
I definitely have exessive shopping as one of the symptoms of my mental health issues so I understand the ableism angle. But like you said there’s more than that in this conversation. I’d guess most of the people hauling tons of books are neurotypical. I personally don’t have the funds to buy books most months because my mental health stuff makes it impossible for me to work and make money so even though shopping is a symptom/coping mechanism for me, I’m not buying tens of books every month. So yeah we should be able to understand the people who buy lots of books due to being neurodivergent but also acknowledge that that’s not the only reason people are buying books and that the discussion about consumerism is needed and important.

THANK YOU. We waited until we got him to give him his name.
Honestly about the book haul thing: Its their money and my money. Like if they want to buy books and get rid of books. Let them. Their money isn't hurting anyone. If we stop buying books, there will be less books being published.
Yeah, it's their money..
Thank you so much for doing these videos! I know it must take a lot of time and research but I really am learning a lot! You have a great personality which makes themes so entertaining!
Thanks for watching!!! I'm glad they're entertaining, I worry they can get boring LOL
@@JessOwens no way! You do a really nice job!
Oh my goodness, books should NOT be a luxury item. This is too much!
About the ableism and buying books thing:
This is obviously just my personal experience, but hopefully this helps explain things.
That makes sense in that way, thank you for sharing.
My jaw literally dropped when I heard that white dude do the audio of that book. Sickening. Sad. 😔
it's the worst thing I've heard and I've listened to Donna Tartt narrate a book
I had thought it was bad before hearing the narration... god damn how did this even get recorded??
"What are you, Costco? You are NOT" is such a mood.
tbh I aspire to be wiggly, cuddly, and chill like Nigel in this video.

there's too much going on on book twitter and too many subtweets for me to make sense of it so thank you for this video it's an absolute blessing ✨
I try my best. Book twitter is a dumpster fire at all times LOL
Yeah, whenever I've sold books it was to a used bookstore or I give them to goodwill
Exactly ! Like it needs to be written with care but trauma can exist in all reading age groups
As an international reader, I thank you so much for acknowledging the privilege US and UK etc readers have, and acknowledging the issues we have, it was necessary and I appreciate it so much
Of course 💜 I often forget but we are very fortunate
Thanks for all the tea, Jess, I don't have social media so this series is always very informative. The publishing merger made me cringe when I first heard about it the other week but I didn't realize how far reaching the consequences are going to be.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad I can keep you up to date on everything. The publishing merger is awful, to me. The US is so big and will only have 4 major publishing houses? UGH
who fears death by nnedi okorafor is a post-apocalyptic story set in Africa but for the audiobook, they casted a British white woman who did the worst African accent I ever heard.
🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ whyyyyy
Hopefully with authors behind them the publishing company will fix it
The audio was a crime, wow. I feel bad for Brazilian readers too, I can't imagine !
Okay I loved editing side pony! I read From Blood and Ash and the other two books (third one just came out) i was conflicted reading it because I liked the books but not happy about the representation. I am glad I’m not the only one that noticed the only POC are servants or people who were killed off!
Edit: oops I put this comment on the wrong video 😳 That is what I get for marathoning your CommuniTEA playlist! Lol just found your channel and I can’t get enough!!!!
I can imagine next weeks episode will be about bookcon being cancelled!
Next week tea is brewing!
I am LIVING for all the Nigel content in this vid!! I have moved away from all my friends with pets shortly before the pandemic started, so I haven't cuddled a dog in months and it's breaking my heart tbh. Just seeing him sitting in your lap with his cute scrunchy little face made my whole day. :')
☺️☺️☺️ Nigel’s expressions are the best
LOVED this video! Nigel's face says it all haha. I agree and hope the merger doesn't happen--last year the merger between Cengage and McGraw-Hill was blocked, and they are two huge education publishers, so maybe there is some hope (but also yeah...America, eye roll). Good point that as consumers we need to pay attention to small presses and spend our money wisely.
Nigel is FED UP with publishing LOL. We can hope the merger doesn't happen but I don't have high hopes
im a teenager, and while i cant speak for all of us, ya books should not be censored. if a book contains heavier topic, add adequate trigger warnings at the front of the book so the reader is able to decide if they can handle reading the topic.
Tuesday is my favourite day! Thank you for another great video. That audiobook though 😬 I can't even imagine how upsetting it would be for the author.
YAY TEA TUESDAY! I'd be so pissed if I was the author
Girllllllll you almost made me chock on my sweet tea when I heard that audio!!!!! I was NOT ready for that nonsense😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂!!!!!!
omg you are mentioned brazil! as a brazilian i'm feeling happy that you noticed us, but ashamed because of Galera Record.
People in prison does read, they're in prison for different reasons, a lot of them for minor crimes, specially BIPOC. WTF?
Thank you just imagine when some of these people when to jail and still didn't have a court dated or couldn't make the bond and now stuck to severe time. Depends on when they went as a minor and then went to jail as a adult unfortunately they mind didn't develop and pretty much still think like a teen. I still send ya from time to time ....
YES! There is so much wrong with that statement.
I'm confused about the ablism as well, and I also have Autism and APD. I will always love Emma's videos and channel as a whole.
It doesn't make sense to me..
Um, excuse me? A funny and informative wrap up of book related news from the social media sphere that I’m not on? Yes please and thank you where has this been all my life?! SUBSCRIBED!

Hahahaha gotta make sure to remind y’all 😂
Something I've noticed in the past couple of years is that soon as the masses learn a 'big word' they proceed to use it in every sentence despite it not being in context. At this point, ableism and other such words hold little to no value as a cause of becoming buzzwords.
LOL. TRUE
Nigel is ridiculously cute omg. he just wanted to sit on your lap to hear the tea firsthand

I really love your channel glad I found you and Nigel - love the publishing news thank you.
Yay welcome 🤗

Oh my god! That audiobook sample 💀💀💀💀 thats HORRIBLE!
And good on Audible for rectifying that atrocious return policy.

@@JessOwens girl, YES 🥴
The audio recording tho....what in the actual hell! Why would anyone ever think that was a good idea?!
No clue, like why didn't you think of getting a Black woman to record the audio from the beginning?
It couldn’t have just been one somebody it had to be a group of somebodies which is what gets me absolutely mind boggling!
Thank you so much for putting captions on this video
Of course, always !
Anxiety is a bitch. I’d be sooo mad if this man narrated anything I wrote 😆
Very informative video, thank you. Happy to also see Nigel again!
Also, wow at that audio. Just why.
Thank you ! The audio is one of the worst I’ve ever heard 😩
I know people have been struggling to find places to donate books to right now because of COVID, hopefully soon libraries will accept donations
Secondhand books are amazing and a lot of my books are secondhand as well
I’m from Brazil and when I was 13, I wanted to read the books I saw the booktube community talk about so passionately. Unfortunately, I never had great experiences with translations. Now I’m 16 and proficient in english (according to Cambridge) and I just feel awful for those, especially my friends, who get less than perfect translations and end up giving up on reading in general :(
That’s so disheartening to not be able to read books that are talked about.
Oh wow, I didn’t know that about Schwab!
If someone wants to spend their money on book that’s they’re business. I have found many books I’ve enjoyed from ppls book haul videos.
So much to unpack in this tea!
So much and there’s just more and more every day 😫
I live in Sweden, and mainly read English books so the Brazil thread spoke to me. A regular international paperback usually starts somewhere above 15$ if you want good quality and not a small print. Crazy, especially finding out thats like the regular price for hardbacks in the US.😔 not to mention the shipping costs. oh god the shipping costs
Shipping is so terrible 😫
@@JessOwens Yes!! And the translations of those same books arent even well done.
That audible deal hacked me off so much - so many independent authors that I have reviewed have been dealing with this and they have actually been IN THE RED with audible...
It’s ridiculous that they allowed people to return books and took that money from authors
Thank for the reminder to use chapstick/lip chap because like you, I’ve been seeing too many crusty dry lips. So dry you could strike a match off them
OMG 💀💀🤣🤣🤣

never saw one of your video but I like the concept, it's really interesting to see what happens out here and what are the problems related it 👍

Wow.
And when people do read about how many people are really in jail for will be shocked
Right, that statement was wrong for so many reasons. I didn't know how restrictive it is to send books to prisons but again, I didn't make a blanket statement on Twitter about it lol
I love your content and commentary!
Please, please, PLEASE kiss Nigel's smooshy little face for me and tell him I love him 😭😭

About the Penguin & Simon and Schuster thing, I was talking to someone who was in publishing in India and people are already getting fired... so, it's going to be affecting the people working in these two publishing houses quite a bit in the next few months.
Oh no😩😩😩
I lost it when the audiobook clip started like whyyyyyy
SOOOO BAD
Maybe, I could see that. I’m glad you kicked depression’s butt ! I hope you get back into reading 💙💙
@@JessOwens Thank you!
My love for Nigel knows no bounds. I can’t with him. 😭❤️😭❤️
Thank you for making these videos!
Tis my pleasure!

LOL! Welcome 🤗🤗
YES! I'm not from Brazil, but I've found cheaper US hardcover special editions than translated paperbacks in my country :(
I know authors don't get any say in this, but the main reason I started to read in english was to avoid spoilers. By the time we had a published translation of the first book , the sequel (or sequels) already came out in the original lenguage.
Wow, that’s so frustrating. I can’t imagine
I just found your channel, you ma’am have gained a new subscriber. Keep up the good work!

The DMCA on ready player two have been lifted (because they were not valid DMCAs) I made a video about the entire thing as well and included the excerpt before it got deleted and gave my (trans) perspective on the whole "nonbinary sex" debacle
Ohhhh, I didn't know that.
@@JessOwens a lot of it is focussed on the usual messed up way women are portrayed but there was a specific trans related passage... just check you bookmarks on Twitter...
Ableism could tie in to book hauls perhaps for people who need books in specific formats (audiobooks, braille, large print) etc, and how those can sometimes be more expensive. Maybe? It's a stretch but that's the connection I can make (as a disabled person myself).
Could be
I typically only buy books for my daughter or books that I am certain that I’ll reread. Mostly, I get books from the library because buying a bunch a books I won’t read is something I consider wasteful.
Love using the library 🙌🏾
The audio clip is so horrendous. I definitely should make a bigger effort to try more books from indie publishers as well
That jail comment did not sit right with me. As far as book collecting, I like to just mind my business. Why is it my business how many books someone buys and why is it someone’s business how many books I buy? Ya know what I mean?
I really need RUclips to give me gifs to respond bc I have the perfect one ... LOL but the jail comment made me so mad
Okay, I have a lot of books. I love buying books, and I am very lucky and privileged to be able to buy them when I want. I also regularly clean out my shelves and take those books to a little lending library at my local park so someone else can also enjoy the fruits of my slight addiction. It's a system that works well for me.
That’s great to have a system ! I love those little lending libraries
That voice will haunt me

Yes, we need more publishers ! Only 4 is ridiculous, I wish we could do more to support editors and authors directly 😒
Nothing could have prepared me for hearing the audio for that “I am a southern black woman” story... wtf was that voice

Yes, publishing needs to work on including trigger warnings in books.
God yeah, the merger news is so icky to me as an aspiring author. The "big 5" was already such a small number ... in a few decades I could see publishing houses going the way of Disney, where one corporation owns EVERYTHING. not a happy thought.
😭😭😭 I hate it
I definitely have exessive shopping as one of the symptoms of my mental health issues so I understand the ableism angle.
There’s so many areas of gray that no one wants to talk about
