The way you mentioned early in the video, that the noise gate helps send the "cleanest" signal to your amp, is not correct. It doesn't "clean" your signal, it "stops" it, in the same way a literal gate would stop you from entering. A noise gate merely stops any signal that is below a certain threshold that you have set. I'm sure you realise this, but you shouldn't say things that inexperienced players may take as factual, since you are imparting your "wisdom" via this video.
Love that you showcase the feedback issue, that has always been the main reason I use a gate. But for some reason I see people mainly talking about using it to cover up sloppiness or just get rid of amp hiss. I use the Mxr Smart Gate, love it.
Amp hiss, or Hum is the main reason for using a noise gate. If you have feedback like this guy had, you are standing way too close to your amplifier, or you're using an acoustic. I've never heard of feedback like in this video, unless you are trying to get it. The noise he was producing is difficult to "get" without actually trying to get.
I haven't played in years but I picked up the Peavy 6505+, Mesa/Boogie Rectifier cab, and an iSP Decimator II after watching a video of you showcasing your gear and settings. The combo is amazing and the Decimator was an amazing purchase. Thank you for all that you do!

Me and my grandpa modified all my tube amps grandpa has a degree in electronics and woodworking but me and him modified my tubes and added a noise gate circuit inside them so I don't have to manually press down on the pedal and my guitars no longer have 60 cycle hum no feedback no staticky noise we also have vintage RCA tubes jn my amp for the preamp and we also modified the whole circuit by rewiring it to be hand wired
I play country rockabilly and bluegrass and Blues I prefer clean tones

Thanks for showing the practical scenarios where the noise gate is important and also your thoughts having used different levels of pedals (cost wise) of noise suppressors and the pros and cons of each and doing a real shoot out between them in a live style rig was really dope to hear!

Actually both knobs do different things on the ns2. Maybe the others are just 8 different presets rather than fine control of tons of possible settings

I’ve owned both the Boss noise gate and the ISP Decimator. I prefer the ISP Decimator. That things is magic! It works well for all types of amps and even though it’s a pedal, I feel like it’s professional level.
The ISP Decimator was the best thing I have ever added to my rig. I had to set mine a little higher because the powerball gave off so much feedback.
when i was in bands years ago I never used any noise gates, the feedback was always somewhat bearable. Later though i started using a Blackstar Distortion pedal and despite sounding great, gave feedback for days! Thats when I got myself a Decimator. Pretty sure I went with it because of some rig rundown you or Matt done for some magazine way back in the day. The simplicity of one control was really the selling point! Still love that pedal when ever i pull out an amp, though i usually just play at home through my PC and Guitar Rig these days
A buddy turned me on to the Decimator maybe 20 years ago. I think it was in the pedals first couple of years. It blew away all other noise gates I'd tried. I highly recommend it to anyone out there looking to put a gate on their signal.

I considered getting the ISP decimator... but instead I went with the Fortin Zuul.. and it's amazing!!! I love how the LED changes when it's active.. and then when you play it changes color.. I couldn't be happier with it!! I'm also a firm believer in you get what you pay for!!

I have two decimator two's that I got super cheap used. I linked them together. One through the front end and one through the effects loop. It works great

Looking at ISP now. I have a Boss NS 2 and had a hard time trying to get what I want. Love the flexibility, but was too much for me. You enlightened me by suggesting to keep it simple and focus on guitar playing and not adjusting knobs

Im a true isp believer I use one myself . I did stumble across a decent mini noise gate , the rowin noise gate mini Is a single knob with a hard/soft switch. I was very surprised how well it stacked up to the isp .. that being said , you should do a mini pedal video. Like a mini setup that you would use yourself. What do ya say man. Lets see what you come up with;)
I used to have the Behringer noise gate and the only way I could get it to function even close to what I wanted was by using the 4 cable method. After that, it was decently effective. I ended up with an ISP Deci-mate eventually and I'm much happier with it!

Great work testing the Peavy with a gate. They’re are known for picking up outside interference. I’ve struggled with them in my little apartments dirty power.

Nothing would bug me more then when you're playing a gig and hear that hum in between chugs or breakdowns. I definitely had to learn the hard way and just trial and error with different gates and such. This video is most helpful. I wish I had this info at the time..... Good times though.

I have been hunting for a noisegate for a few months now that I have a orange Dark terror and I’m really glad I finally found a video that suggests and isn’t recommended endorse video products. I’ve been thinking about the isp, the mxr and the rocktron guitar silencer pedals already. People kept suggesting the boss but personally I didn’t like the amount of knobs it came with and not many had good things to say about it

I’m really digging the budget Behringer pedals, I own a few of them. The price points are insane and even though the plastic casing is cheap the quality is there. That being said the pedal aren’t top notch but they are great for back ups if something were to happen to your main pedals that you use. I have an Ibanez TS9 Tubescreamer that is my main overdrive but I also have a Behringer Vintage Tube Overdrive that holds up very nicely compared to the Ibanez Tubescreamer. The only difference is that the Ibanez TS9 has an all metal casing, is $100 brand new, and is a little tighter in the low end and the Behringer is $20 with plastic casing, is a little less tight in the low end but still kicks major ass as a back up Screamer.
Same. I mainly want pedals to record with and have fun with at home and I'm not gonna spend thousands of dollars on pedals. I only have 1 behringer pedal so far but Quality seems great on it. I'll probably buy 3 or 4 more soon. I think for most purposes they're fine though if I was a regular gigging musician I could understand wanting something with a metal casing that is more durable. I wonder if the behringer pedals will hold up over time.

The difference between the “Mute” and “Reduction” for the NS2 is on Reduction mode you can turn the pedal on and off, on the mute mode it’s automatically always on and when you press on it it completely mutes your sound. 🙂

@@thromboid mute is a hard gate and reduction is a soft gate, its not just a mute button. it is basically is a faster responding version of the reduction, but in this video he didn't turn the threshold down on the mute mode for some reason
If you put cotton buds/q-tips inside the springs on your Floyd, you can kill the noise from the springs which I can still hear a little when you were using the ISP. This way you're not battling that noise as well.

Such an underrated topic of discussion. Everyone is quick to jump on with the MOST BRUTAL SOUNDING AMPS/CABS/GUITARS but not nearly enough discussion on properly harnessing that power so it doesn't sound like a wall of uncomprehensible noise. Thanks for this! I was using an old Boss NS-2 and I'm fairly certain that it was wired backwords because your settings and mine are literally the exact opposite with the same desired effect. It however still isn't getting the job done so I just ordered a Decimator at your suggestion! Thanks for that and keep this stuff coming! It's EXTREMELY helpful!

@Wrong One I have! So my pedal is weird and really old. I believe there's some bad contacts on the send return jacks because it actually makes MORE noise when i do it that way. It's pretty ironic when you think about it...

I have the ISP Decimate (mini Decimator) works good. As for the Behringer i have the TO800 and for the price it's a steal. If you don't gig i don't think the plastic is an issue.

generally I use the Decimator in the effects loop before the time-based effects. This The gate will not cut the reverb or delay tails, ad keeps overall snd quiet.
I've tried NS-2, but the decay it's waaay too lazy and threshold it's not so accurate as the ISP.
The MXR has the same problem as NS-2, but the fixed decay is even worst and threshold is quite bit kinda deaf.
Decimator knows what to do, so sensitive to quieter strings movement even when pushed hard, and the decay is not linear but the filtering is so accurate that understands what is noise, and what is a long dying note. It lets you sustain a quiet note without cutting it. It's an almost always on pedal.
One that I haven't tried yet is the Zuul. People says that's to good as Decimator. Have you tried this one? Cheers!

@Rob get some floyd rose noiseless springs for your trem-equipped guitars. It'll get rid of that slight ringing every time you mute in between chugs. Good comparison video of the gates!

Bought the decimator because of your recommendation like 10 years ago. Dropped it very badly by accident and the knob broke off. Wrote to isp to get the specs of the pot to get one and solder it in. They sent me one for free...to fucking germany. Great guys and great product. Thx for the heads up

I do notice it takes away from my ability to hit certain pinch harmonics on the lower strings

The Fortin Zuul is my goto gate; one knob, key input, friggin’ does it job so well.
But it’s funny thinking back on the gates I’ve used in years past. Totally had/used the Rocktron Rush, the Decimator, the NS2. But those were the days when we’d would run a rack sonic maximizer with our 5150/6505’s rigs because we thought it was like a magic sauce, only reflect years later and question what we were doing. Haha
So many people got those Maximazers! I never got one, but I was reading about them on forums and definitely wanted one! I think most people know better these days...
Exactly! The maximizers were thought of as a secret sauce. Chimaira definitely got caught up in that for awhile!
Zuul has been my favorite one so far. I love the "key" thing.

I love my decimator. The simplicity of it was the reason why I decided to jump on it once I saw it at a local guitar store. I mean I like options but it has to be particular options lol.
Indeed! I like options too... but sometimes it's just a matter of "the simpler the better".

but i would recommend looking for the cheapest, and most compact, noise gate. ( i don't have a Kmise, but why not try one? i bet it works just as good as an ISP )
then figure how many you need to get your composite threshold as low as you need it for your most tail demanding stuff....then get one more.
I've used about every gate out there and in my opinion, nothing is better than the ISP Decimator. The last two I got were bought used for around $60. I'll hang on to the one I have until it dies but honestly...I've never had an issue with one. Get the ISP even if used!! I also must say "Pass Out Of Existence" is still crazy good twenty years later!!

I've finally got a decent amp and I had saved this video for reference when choosing a noise gate. I know the ISP decimator II is one of the best you can buy but I was wondering if you've had any experience with the G String version? I'm just wondering if it's worth the extra £ as it's quite a lot! Cheers
Nice James! I haven't tried the G string myself, but I'm sure it's awesome! It's what I'd get today if I were in need of something new. I don't think you can even get the older version like I have anymore, unless you were to grab one used. Good luck!
Hey Rob, thanks for all the great content. Hopeful for a Chimaira resurrection of course. I'm curious. I don't see you use or discuss the GSP 1101 anymore. I know there are a million things out there that may sound better nowadays, but I bought mine because of you and Megadeth using it. Still have it, it's my primary rig, and I love it! It's killer! Have it dialed in perfectly for my sound. Just curious why you moved away from it. Anyways, thank you again for the great content, your useful advise, and keeping metal alive!
Cheers J! I definitely still use the GSP, but it's part of my live rig. When I'm just jamming at home, I use other tools to create the effects I'm after. If I were to start touring again full time though, I think I'd look into a newer effects processor like the Helix or something (which I've actually never tried), because the GSP technology is pretty outdated at this point. I'll bet the newer stuff has better tones, more reliability, more options, greater flexibility, and better made mechanical components.
i like using the ns2 in the x settup so my guitar di contorls the gate but it kills the feedback in the effects loop. i still put my clean boost b4 the ns2 tho. thanks for the awsome info brother much love from conneaut ohio

I got the ISP Decimator 2 a while back and a few months ago I got the newer one the G-string I think and that it supposed to go in the fx loop and the front of the amp but I haven't quite figured out why it's not working as good. Am I using it correctly? I bought it used so it could be defective.
Unfortunately I haven't tried those models, so I can't say for sure. I have seen that they have an input and an output, for in front of your amp, and also a send and return to use with your loop. I have heard of guys using both simultaneously, but I haven't tried that myself. If it were me, I'd just go with the input and output, and run it in line in front f my amp. From there I'd try to dial in the sound I'm looking for. If I wasn't able to acheive the sound I'm looking for, then I'd start experimenting with the loop option as well. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, and good luck!
i have the ehx silencer after my ibanez tubescreamer then into my bugera 6262 infinium amp head

I play a Mosrite MK I which has extremely hot single coils, and lots of hum. Ok I do not chug chords, I play classic rock, I tend to hold bent notes, and vibrate them often. So I want sustain, and dont want the notes to go away suddenly. SO does this ISP noise gate pedal let the notes sustain naturally or does it choke them off suddenly?
One of the reasons I love the Decimator so much is because it still allows my notes and chords to sustain naturally. So I think you'll be good to go!

Yessir! That's exactly what you should do! They're primarily made to be used with distorted amps.
What is the best one for single coil Stratocasters? I go for a huge tone, like Jimi or SRV general idea. I need to get rid of hum, hiss, buzz, etc..
I say the ISP Decimator is the best noise reduction unit I've ever used, so that's what I'd recommend for any scenario! 🎸
Hey rob i run my pv at around 3 on volume and gain on 5 i found that bad feedback is to do with bad guitar set up it could be a list of things as of these
Bad pickups, bad wireing, pickups to high, bad shilding, graphite black paint is useually the best for that, springs if trem, i found noise supressors usually destroy some signal by guitar and makes it more of a synthetic type of sound somthing is not getting to where it should👍
So are you saying your tone is cool and free of feedback without a noise gate? By the way, I love the "pv" abbreviation! I never thought of that, and it's certainly easier than writing out peavey as often as I do! I'll be using that from now on!🤘
When I try to play guitar, I'm a bass player, I plug my guitar into the tight metal Jr into my Lil micro terror. It has a nice gate with a control knob. Plus it was built the legend himself, James Brown. A 50150 in a pedal basically.

Absolutely! It will work for any type of amp! Typically, distorted amps are noisy. And the louder they are, the noisier they are. Having a noise gate cleans up excess noise for a cleaner sound.
Mute mode is great. It leaves the noise suppression active, and instead the switch functions as a mute instead of reduction on/off.
I just realized that today! I think it's actually the better mode of the two!
Have you ever tried out the ISP decimator pro rack G? I know you said you don’t really run a gate in your effects loop, but the pro rack g is a 2 channel gate and it’s the best I’ve ever used. Kind of expensive though. Also, I was surprised how cranked your mids are!
I have! I owned one for awhile but sold it a few years ago. The reason? Too much control! I couldn't make it do what I wanted it to do in the same way I could with one knob on the pedal version.

You're definitely right, but personally, spring noise doesn't bother me. I feel it's a part of my tones liveliness. As for the Decimator, I never thought about it this way until now, but I don't think it's looking for the sound/frequency created by trem springs. It's looking more for feedback, hum, etc.

I'll consider it, but at this point I feel a little weird doing an album listen on one of my own albums. With the Crown of Phantoms review I did, I felt it was a little more appropriate due to the circumstances.

Great Video Rob. I'm a fan Of the TC Electronic Sentry noise gate. My other guitar player had one and ever since I tried his I've been sold and it hasn't left my board. I have a question/possible video idea. If you use a noise gate when playing and recording live to reduce noise and feed back, how do you get feedback when using plugins? Im Just starting to use them and even got a nice one from Neural DSP. I can't seem to get it to feedback when I'm recording. It sounds amazing when I record with it but it just doesn't feedback and there are some places where I want it too. Also I'm finding noticeable latency that throws me off when playing. Any help with using plugins would be really helpful. Recording old school with a mic on a cab is great but plugins have gotten so good and are so convenient I really want to be able to use them to their full potential. Thanks Rob you're the man 🤘🤘🤘
Cool Jed! I've ran into the same issue, where I'm TRYING to get feedback while recording in the box, and here's what I do...
I stand up and hold my guitar right up to my monitors! Even crank up the volume of everything if you have to. It works!
As for latency, that's something you have to figure out based on your setup. I can't hunt down the cause without seeing your setup myself.
Assuming you have modern equipment, and your buffer and system settings are set appropriately, latency could also be caused my another plugin in your session. For instance, some plugins are just far more processor intensive than others. If you have something like tape saturation, or multiband compression, or pitch correction, or certain noise reductions plugins, all of those will add substantial system delay, making it impossible to track additional performances. So see if you have any of those going on in your session, then make them inactive (not just bypassed), or remove them temporarily.

My equipment can definitely can handle the processing there just might be too much going on or some process running that I'm unaware of. Maybe I should get one. I usually plug straight in. I use a peavey triple xxx and turn my gain to barely 9 o'clock on the second channel. I try to keep it fairly clean like John Christ though I know I don't sound like him. Anyway, thanks for the lesson man. 🤘

For the ns2, leave the decay at zero and just use the threshold to dial it in. That's how it works best.

Yeah “min” let’s less through, “max” opens it up, just like the boss noise suppressor. If decay and threshold were both set to “min” it would have been virtually silent.

Does the decimator "let " you sustain your leads.? I remember the NS-2 would choke out notes when I would do melodic leads... Gradually bending up a note
It clamps down on your sustain some, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make with my tone, to keep it super tight. I think it's all about finding that sweet spot with your own rig, where most feedback is eliminated, and you still get the sustain you're looking for. To me, it's easiest to find that sweet spot with only one knob on the Decimator, rather than getting into a balancing act with a unit that has more control.

In my opinion, a noise gate is exactly what you need. And without one, a compressor will only make your problem worse.
Do u know the difference in the newer ISP’s cause I have the same one u do. And wondered if the new ones are better. Cause I do notice with my rig which I run a revv generator 100, then have a compressor, ts9, EQ, then my gate. Then all time effects in the loop. And I notice with all my passive guitars, I have the threshold right where u do, but my guitars with the fishmans which are ignorant hot on modern voice, I have to crank the isp up to 1/2. But then I notice it squashes too much sometimes. So I wondered if the new ones are better. Cause at quiet volumes it’s fine, but In practice, with my EII for instance I have to really stand away from my amp.
Interesting! While I can't say for sure, I would assume the newer designs are even better than the original, and that's because the technology has no doubt improved over the years. I noticed the newer versions say they have some sort of tracing technology, which to me sounds like something that actively seeks out feedback causing frequencies. So that sounds superior to me. But again, I'm not sure unfortunately!
@@RobArnoldWorld well you def helped cause I thought about maybe running it in the loop cause I’ve seen some guys do that with success, but I use effects in the loop, so I wouldn’t want it to squash the time effects you know. I do have a hush 2x pedal that I thought about putting after the ISP. But again not sure how much tone that would suck you know

Very interesting to know how and why you may need a noise gate pedal. I've never needed one with the Marshall combi amp that I had. Speaking of amps I have found a Marshall combi amp which comes with overdrive, reverb and stereo chorus blind in. So the only thing that I need is a distortion pedal. Or Rob would I need anything else ?
I'm not sure that you'd even need a distortion pedal! If it were me, I'd experiment with the amp a bunch, and then decide if additional distortion is necessary.

Why do stacks' volume go to 10 but pro's rarely turn them up past 3 or 4? Is that incase my drumset is too big & the board is too small ya just crank it to 10?
Maybe! That's a great question. Even going to 5 on my amp is unfathomably loud. I doubt I've ever even had it there except for by accident.
I was Just typing If I would've let the vid play another 4 seconds. lmao Buy yeah dude most amp I've heard are insanely loud at 5. I had an old jam buddy who'd have his old Ampeg 1/2 stack on 6-7 & it was so muddy & crappy sounding (the 'I don't care what someone in a magazine says I don't follow trends' guy). One day I snuck over & turned up his mids some & the bass down & he was able to turn his volume down to 3 & we could finally distinguish notes below the 7th fret. He had a conniption fit but after we played a song he kept apologizing because he finally understood things in a fuller way.

I’ve heard a lot of talk about putting your gate in front of your amp, or in the FX loop. And also a lot of people say it doesn’t matter.
My brain tells me that the FX loop generally has more chain links in it, so the gate is better served there.
What are your thoughts on this topic?

The Jim Dunlop MXR Noise Clamp (M195) is similar to the Decimator II in that it simply has a dial. It's also significantly cheaper. I don't own one but I need one. Even with a little practice rig, I find the awful noises generated to be demoralizing, as stupid as that sounds. Thanks for the video. *Edit:* I spent $35 USD on a Donner "Noise Killer" pedal after seeing Steve Stine give it a positive review, and it works great.

Couldn't get the TC iron curtain so got the Behringer instead. I agree it feels cheap but I don't get that resonance you're getting, then again I'm only playing through a solid state practice amp.
What kind of guitar and bridge you using?

ESP LTD H-250 - tune-o-matic stop tail.
ESP LTD M-103 - Floyd Rose licensed.
Ibanez RG 7421 - Fixed f107 bridge.
Harley Benton R458 fan fret - individual sadles.
I can't get the volume or tone of an expensive set up which is probably why I don't notice the resonance. I'm also no pro so I won't have a well tuned ear.
@@DEJAVOODOO-gb7ww Well I would think that the only guitar that would get that resonance would be your M-103 with the floyd. And that's because the springs in the back are what will create that resonate like we heard in the video.

Now more so than ever! I've actually been kind of bored with the 6505 for awhile now. But with amp sims getting better and better all the time, I can't justify spending money on new heads. If something were to fall into my lap though, I'd be all about it!

I did not try that. While I still believe the ISP Decimator is the way to go, having the NR300 is certainly better than nothing!

The Behringer pedal is basically a copy of the Boss noise gate. So the setting are going to be the same. You wanna run the pedals that you want to reduce the noise on through the Send/Return line. Then the guitar and clean pedals through the In/Out clean signal line. The problem with both the Behringer and the Boss pedal is that the noise can be reduced really nice but the decay time needs to be dropped low or else the sound you actually want to hear after you strum will cut out very quickly as well. The ISP really doesn't have that issue at all. It cuts the played very naturally.
