After searching and watching several videos on the subject I finally found what I was looking for. Great explanation with exceptional demonstration clips. Thanks!
Have been searching for an answer to why I Slice and Hook at random , and today at the range trying different things found this , so I'm here confirming it , wow it was the cause all along. Thankyou. Finally confident to hit the ball as hard as I know I can and should.
I am 67 with a host of orthopedic issues and have switched to a very strong grip with great results. As we age we lose more flexibility than strength, in most cases. A strong grip allows me to hit the ball far more consistently and farther without the need to turn as much or follow through as much which really helps my bad back.
Probably the best teacher on RUclips. The best advice is always to learn your body and not fight what's natural. He gives you the things to notice and the things to look for as you practice, which is the only way to get better at this sport. Thanks!
I’ve been FORCING myself to do a neutral grip at most and even tried a strong grip. I found that a weak grip is most consistent with ball striking. End of the video you said, “what works for you is best, but you also don’t recommend a weak grip. I hear you, but it works for me for I am a strong individual that is a handsy player.
Great video... I always used a strong grip because I was told that is the best grip to have. I was experimenting with a more neutral grip just today and I was hitting the ball straighter and more solid throughout the bag. I am going to dial in the more neutral grip.
Playing for a year or so...still taking lessons. Big slicer with weak to neutral grip. To fix the slice I've recently tried the strog grip I can get and bing ! Straight as an arrow, more consistency but lost 20-25 yards with the dirver though and 3wood and hybrid also. I guess I still need to loosen up a bit but I'm super happy the results so far. Great videos Adam ! Cheers from Argentina Actually I've gained distance by being more straight
I started playing with neutral grip and had an avg club swing speed in 90mph ...slowly developed body swing and now have somewhat more strong grip and club speed. Thats explain it so nicely. Also would request Adam to add a second part in this video to explain the how much power should we apply to hold different club for different kind of shots. Like for chip shot i hold it more hard than a Tee shot.
Rajeev, Thanks, and glad you are making progress. Regards grip pressure, generally just try for what you feel is needed. Lots of speed, or smashing out of a bad lie would require more, a soft pitch less, etc. Hope this helps. Best, Adam

Will also try to start incorporating more of a strong grip but seems like it’s harder to bow the wrist this way. What’s your thoughts?
Hi - I love using a strong grip and recently an instructor told me to switch to a more neutral grip. When teaching do you have the mindset of do whatever feels comfortable. The strong grip definitely feels more comfortable to me, but not sure to try the neutral grip to try and make it more comfortable.
I think it depends on whether the grip is causing problems squaring the face through impact, and generally throughout the swing. If there are problems I'd consider making the change. Best, Adam
I had a strong grip and I had a tendency to over hook the ball or leave the club face wide open for a slice on driver or Irons I switched to a weak grip and now hitting straight and further on a consistent bases. I can also draw the ball with the same grip when I want but do not have the accuracy yet.
Perfect timing for this video. I was using a weak grip and was working on making it stronger but other videos didn't explain how to fix it as simple and easy as this video did
Great video Adam. I have a tendency to just pick up the club without paying attention and over time my grip gets way off. Very important to keep this in check! Thanks for the video and your Solid Strike Formula course is ROCKIN'!!! Love it. Highly recommended.
great video, would love to have some time with Adam, im now 57 still competitive off 7, played for years off 4. And i played all that time with such a strong grip. Had lesson after lesson, on a bad day the shouts of left rang out. I now still hit a long ball, but have to control my body lag
Adam just wanted to thank you for your drop five strokes videos. I purchased it and the solid strike video series and have dropped about 10 strokes. Thank you and please keep up the good work.
This is a great video. To see what your natural physiology is, stand up straight and let your arms naturally hang. The more you see the backs of your hands the stronger the grip you should have.
I use a weak grip. if I go neutral or even slightly strong I'm hooking it. A weak grip took the hook out of the equation. Straight and down the middle 90% of the time. I can now fire my hips and let my body square the face with a lot of confidence.
As the clubs get longer it seems more difficult to square the club face. Would you ever recommend a player have a slightly stronger grip for driver and even 3 wood compared to their grip for the other clubs. After all we weaken our grip for chips shots and putting...so just like a weak grip helps keep the face open on a chip shot maybe a strong grip helps close the face to hit straighter shots with the driver.
Yet another excellent piece, Sir! Being naturally left-handed but swinging right-handed - the alleged perfect recipe - I do have a tendency to allow the left hand to rotate left and become weak. Although 'comfy' this is no good and I understand why top players are so meticulous in their fundamentals... Thanks, William
Great video. With the neutral grip do you feel like it’s best for the amateur to let the clubhead naturally square itself with slightly closed shoulders near impact, or should I try and keep the face square/ closed through the entire swing? Thx again!
Thank you Adam! Quick question please, speaking of grips. Due to a skin issue I stopped wearing a glove on my left hand for over a year. I’m comfortable not using one. Now that the issue is a mute point, do you think a person is missing out of any benefits, by not using a golf glove? Thank you in advance.
Lance, The only benefit is a more secure hold on the club. Fred Couples never wore a glove, so if you can hold a club securely without it then it's fine not to wear one. Best, Adam
Hi Adam! Do you ever recommend people weaken or strengthen their grip to play a certain shot shape? If I'm on a dogleg left (I'm a lefty), and I want to hit a big fade/slice around the corner, would you recommend it all be taken care of during setup with body and ball alignment, or would weakening the grip help, too?
Adam I'm a natural Lefty that plays golf Right handed, with a weak left hand grip I've always been able to hit a fade without much trouble of losing it way right. My natural strength in my left fingers, hand, wrist, forearms, shoulder seems to keep the face square to target and with path to the left, the fade just keeps happening. I know some right hand players that have tried my weak left hand grip, and that always turns out a disaster for them. They always go back to a stronger left hand grip, and forget what I do.
Thanks for the new video Adam. You explained that hand position determines a strong or weak grip. Once you figure out which position is best for you, how firmly should you grasp the club - clamp your hand hard on it or not so hard?
Was told to squeeze a tube of toothpaste gently until paste was about to come out, worked for me, good luck with this beautiful but oh so frustrating game.
Adam - I appreciate your videos very much. Question on the right hand grip - should the club grip be aligned 1) at the point where the two middle fingers meet the hand or 2) closer to the first joint of middle fingers. I have an old book by Joe Norwood called Golf-O-Metrics that went into a lot of detail on grip and setting right wrist down, which seemed to have my right above the club too much. Appreciate any comment you might have. Thanks!
How about the right hand grip for a righty, is the crease between the thumb and finger supposed to be pointing towards your right shoulder, can you have a weak or strong grip with the right hand or should it be a neutral grip. Thanks 😃👍🏌🏼
Dennis, There are all kinds of combos that can work. Generally the crease would point between train shoulder and trail ear. Hope this helps. Best, Adam
Im a natural right hander that plays left handed (one hand right, both left). I was a terrible slicer with the driver until strengthening my grip. I would say that my grip is neutral with the irons. Im still experimenting with the woods, depending on whether hitting from a tee or not. Is this normal or should I be adopting one grip for all?
The strong(er) grip is key guys. You will eventually eliminate slice and develop a much more playable draw with the right ball position. What you then need to work on is takeaway. Specifically club face angle as it hits waste high and is ready to go up and hinge. Tendency is to keep it shut down causing problems. My key swing thought is too make sure my club face gets open enough on the way up. It makes a world of difference on the way back through. Your mileage may very but that was the starting point for me of beginning to really hit some great shots.
Actually I was there on Sunday. On a little holiday with my wife and daughter. It was a beautiful afternoon, hope you got some golf in. All the best, Adam
@@Scratchgolfacademy wanted to say Hi but there were a lot of people around. Hope you and your family had a great time here in Scotland. I played at fairmont St andrews, had a really amazing weekend there.
I had to switch my frip to a weaker grip cause I kept hooking it with a strong and even more neutral grip. But I'm hitting it straight now. It feels kinda weird but hopefully I get used it
Not sure there is a clear distinction, but generally speaking players with stronger grips tend to release later, so likely that's it. All the best, Adam
@@Scratchgolfacademy One thing I would mention is that when I first strengthened my grip it took me a while to adjust because I was still releasing the club like I was still using the weak grip. Started releasing the club later and started hitting the ball straighter and longer.
I have no idea how anyone can play with a weak grip. However, there are golf pros that have a weak grip so it is definitely possible. I have a strong grip myself. Any weaker and all I hit are huge fades.
John Daly in his book recommends a strong grip.Jack Nicklaus says in his books,a strong grip is a weak grip.Fred Couples,Paul Azinger ,David Duval, all use strong grips, whereas Ian Poulter,Monty and Greg Norman are neutral.Yet they've all earned huge amounts of money from golf, playing golf as they see fit.Personally I think you should go over your local driving range and hit a bucket of balls and see what works best.I don't think you can go far wrong with a neutral grip where the left thumb is just right of centre.(if you are right handed) Why ? Because it is easier to repeat and keep a check of.
Mark, For most people (not Woods, Johnny Miller, or Hogan) they lose too much distance doing that. Play around with a grip modification at the range, and see what shows up....but give it some time. Best, Adam
Strong grip with a draw is the only way to hit it far when you work and can't practice. Open the face slightly of you really need a fade. Like he is saying you have to really be precise and good to play well with a weak grip. I'd rather draw every shot its consistent and powerful. 6.7 Index this year lowest since I was 16 drawing every shot.
You'd then have to work on characteristics that successful players have that use strong grips. I did a video on Each Johnson's swing a while back, you might find that helpful. All the best, Adam
Thanks for the awesome content Adam. I’m a slicer. A Bad Slicer! I’m having a lot of trouble finding the happy medium. If I grip too strong it goes left, too weak and I’m on the next fairway. Occasionally I’ll land it in the middle but can’t pinpoint what I’m doing right when I hit a decent drive. Love this game!
Then why golf coaches teach kids, as I was, to have a weak grip? I mean, I've always had a strong grip, since I was 6 years old, and they always tried to take away my natural swing and my strong grip. I could never coordinate twisting my wrists along with the downswing with a weak grip. But know that I have no coach My game has improved so much and so my distance, I used to hit a drive 260 with a weak grip and sliced it a lot, now I hit it 305 yds with a slight fade. Sometimes coaches missread the body motion and basically mess swings up
I’m the opposite. Always had a weak grip and managed to get down to 9hc with it but my drives in particular were erratic to say the least. I’ve recently had my grip severely strengthened and my drives are on another level. Hitting twice as many fairways and instead of my good shot carrying 300y, that’s now my average. I wish I did this 10yrs ago.
Shane, That's true. However, it's generally poor thinking for someone of average ability & commitment to copy something that's eccentric in a great player. Better for most people to copy the things that are common to most players. Hope this helps. Best, Adam
How to make an awful golf video? Step 1: Pose an interesting comparison between 2 techniques and suggest that you have an answer. Step 2: Go through a video where you introduce a third option. Step 3: End by saying, just do whatever works.... Scratch this channel off my list
@@Scratchgolfacademy Be fair. The title says "strong vs. weak (the winner!)". Did it deliver on the promise? if it had said, "comparing golf grips" I would have to shut up and go away
Fair point Dan. To be honest, some of the wording in titles is based on popular search words, and once I get the subject in mind I just kind of go, in this case ignoring the details of the title. All the best, Adam
To me, this is malpractice for a teacher to recommend one or the other. It is infinitely more complicated than is described here. A strong grip requires a extremely fast clearing of the hips which some golfers cannot do. Hogan is acknowledged as the best ball striker in history and employed a weak grip as did Moe Norman. The discussion goes on and on. These internet teachers are doing harm to the golfing public. There are dozens and dozens of them. Please ignore them all and go see a teaching professional in person. If I seem upset, I am because I fell victim to the endless theories and techniques spouting from well meaning, but eventually harmful coaches.
It’s just a video, not claiming to be the Gospel. After 35 years of full time teaching I’ve found , very generally, that average players do better with strong than weak grips. Neutral is fine too
He literally showed us an example and said a strong grip required an athletic clearing of the body. And showed us that if you couldn’t do that more release with a weaker grip was effective. He also actually did not recommend ONE grip over the other. Gave us 2 options.
Adam just provides clear advice. He doesn’t force anyone to do anything in his videos. Also, at the end of the video, he suggests the viewer try the different styles and “do what works best for you”. FWIW, Mike Malaska advocates a strong grip, and provides his thoughts on why.
Actually one is better than the other, for distance… so this video is great. Everybody has the same wrist anatomy… and wrists can unhinge more violently/naturally with a strong grip, just science. Strong grip is the most anatomically sound swing… it’s in every stick sport. Baseball/hockey/tennis and so on.
After searching and watching several videos on the subject I finally found what I was looking for. Great explanation with exceptional demonstration clips. Thanks!

Thanks for the comment Michael.

Great
Thanks very much Ethan.

Been playing with weak grip for decades. Taught to aim left, and fade ball. Not saying it's good, but it's all I know.
Mark,
For most people (not Woods, Johnny Miller, or Hogan) they lose too much distance doing that. Play around with a grip modification at the range, and see what shows up....but give it some time.

Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the videos. By concentrating on my fundamentals I am finally approaching mediocrity! 👍
Ha, glad to hear that!

What about spieth?
Paul,
There are lots of different looking grips among successful players, this video is more aimed at the average player.

Strong always defeats the weak.
When it comes to grips I generally agree
What if you have a natural tenancy to have a strong grip but your club face is too closed on impact lots of balls going left, thanks in advance
You'd then have to work on characteristics that successful players have that use strong grips. I did a video on Each Johnson's swing a while back, you might find that helpful.

@@Scratchgolfacademy I'll have a look, thanks for the response your videos are very helpful and well made
I meant Zach Johnson. Thanks
I find a strong grip results in ball going left too far. Most shots a neutral grip is perfect.
Fair enough David, you should stick with what's working for you.
Best, Ada,
Thanks for the awesome content Adam.
Thanks Steve, hope you can break through.

Thanks Loui.

I kinda like a weak grip. Keeps me from missing left.
Sounds good Marty.

Why does the title say weak is the winner ?
It just says ‘The winner’ to create speculation, I agree that it should be a question mark, not exclamation point. Thanks
Sometimes coaches missread the body motion and basically mess swings up
Pablo,
Glad you've made progress.

All I know is if you don't rotate through you're gonna dig...
Thanks.

Hogan weakened his grip after his car accident. Yes he hit thousands of balls to perfect it, but weak isn't dead. Hogan won 6 majors with a weak grip.
Shane,
That's true. However, it's generally poor thinking for someone of average ability & commitment to copy something that's eccentric in a great player. Better for most people to copy the things that are common to most players.
Hope this helps.

What's with all these commercials
Sorry Louis, it's pretty standard for this type programming.

How to make an awful golf video? Step 1: Pose an interesting comparison between 2 techniques and suggest that you have an answer. Step 2: Go through a video where you introduce a third option. Step 3: End by saying, just do whatever works.... Scratch this channel off my list
Wow Dan, you really hated the video.

I just switched to a strong grip today and hit the ball than I ever have in my life.
Don't show what we do wrong. Wastes time.
