I realize people have differing opinions on these particular men, the political parties at that moment in time, and politics in general, but I for one find the discourse on display here to be a good example of how serious, erudite, and respectful political figures WERE, and how distorted, cynical, and mean-spirited political life is NOW. And yes, I know all about Thorpe, but murderous intent is a permanent feature of human life in society (not that it's excusable); I just don't think that undermines the point I'm trying to make.
I think their presentation is better in the ways you outline. However, the fundamental rot within the system was and is still there. Around Thorpe were Heath, Cyril Smith and Clement Freud. Their predatory behaviour only revealed after they died. The system breeds, protects and exists on deviance. How many others were never found out and how many still lurk?
They are good at getting their view across. That's all. The rest is just an illusion. It's only because people have access to 24 hour news sources today that scandals are bought to the public's attention much quicker. If these politicians governed in todays age the UK would be in an a permanent state of scandal & corruption. These politicians were far more corrupt than UK politicians today, it was just easier to get away with and cover up.
Lord H says nothing except that processes happen in the conventional way. An amazing number words are used to say that the expected will happen ... as expected.
I remember the Thorpe trial very well, when discussing it in the pub we used to refer to his lover as 'Scott of the Arse-antics'.....happy days, long since gone!!
I remember also that there was a pub discussion about which tissues were used in the bedroom. Thorpe had apparently said that he always used "Scotties".
Self interest masquerading as considered and reasonable discussion. We know what they were up to behind the scenes and their traitorous behaviour towards the British people
Broadcaster Jonathan Fryer said about Thorpe - "he couldn't have come out, even if he'd wanted to". His double standard irritated and alienated the gay Liberals: "He wanted the best of both worlds-his fun and a family."
Wow ... Hugh Grant portrayed his vibe quite well.
Would you care for a little Tea-bag ?

+Simon Finch true enough; Cyril a Smith in particular was hideous.

Thanks for posting this. An intersting historical indicator.
A considered and measured discussion of the issues. Alas not what we see today, with people denounced as traitors and enemies of the people.
All at the same as plotting to murder his ex-boyfriend. Impressive...
My God , these voices were designed to put you to sleep.
and very successful they were
And how very understandable and clear they are.
kal 61 Yeah when politics was a grown up discussion, and not an incoherent shouting match of political points scoring
Is Hailsham wearing a syrup?
Lord Hailsham was a truly vile man according to my uncle who worked with him back in the day.
A pompous arrogant man. I remember reading in the Kenneth Williams diary that he detested him, even though at a time he was Kenneth's MP
Thorpe would've been prepping the Norman Scott silencing around this time.

I think that's what tickled Gardner so much--it was a masterclass in bullshitting that would have made Sir Humphrey proud.
Jeremy Thorpe was evil.

This is ancient history: during the Norman times.

How did norman Scott the man he tryed to plot off
They were very posh in those days
Posh on the outside, and downright perverts in some cases on the inside.
"A player of the pink trombone".
Denis 1901 “pink oboe”

What does he'd think about gay rights considering he was openly gay politician
Broadcaster Jonathan Fryer said about Thorpe - "he couldn't have come out, even if he'd wanted to". His double standard irritated and alienated the gay Liberals: "He wanted the best of both worlds-his fun and a family."
I don' t know how I got here but suffice to say this bloody stuff is deadly boring.
The right honorable member of the Jobbyjabber Party wot wot?
