Lol... Hawaiian scale likes to downplay the size a lot... whatever the face size is it's at LEAST half that but you never want to lose respect for calling it too big. So it's constantly lowballed...10-12 ft face?...brah das barely tree feet! So Hawaiian scale for depth of reef going be da reverse...brah not even dat shallow!
There are certain lava heads (especially backdoor) that are shallower when it's big, otherwise there's 5 feet min depth with deeper spaces in between. When it's small and breaking close it is much much shallower and more reef.
TIMMY wouldn’t say that, people don’t realise how dangerous it really is. That’s why people still get killed very frequently because they don’t know what they’re doing. Sounds obvious why you need advanced experience to surf there, but you’d be surprised at how many people lack common sense.
It breaks further out in deeper water when it is bigger like most reef breaks. Still the take off spot on a double overhead day is probably only 2 meters deep max, and when the wave rolls into the inside it would be about a meter deep.
The waves height is double the waters depth. This is why it's extremely shallow on a flat day. However when it's 15ft, you will almost never hit the reef
OT OT yes that is true, this video did explain the point well. All I’m saying is if was actually this shallow on somewhat big day, nobody would even sure it. People still hit the reef and get trapped even on big days because Pipe is so powerful.
@@godisbollocks wow that's insane! All I was saying was that if the reef was actually 1ft deep on surfable days, nobody would surf Pipeline. With the spot you mentioned it clearly doesn't get deep at all, but at Pipeline, (according to my brother who surfed there at 4-5ft not Hawaiian) it's 8-10 ft deep on the take off and like 3-4ft deep when you finish. So basically like any other break. However pipeline is insanely powerful so I understand why ppl hit the reef
@@OT0T sorry I now realize this comment isn’t accurate. What I meant is: this video shows a great example of how shallow and dangerous pipeline really is. However on a 20 ft day the reef will be more like 10-15ft deep at the take off location instead of 1. Doesn’t mean you can’t hit the reef or get trapped in the caves because you clearly do with a wave a strong and powerful as pipeline. Additionally the reef gets about 5-10ft shallower as the wave continues to barrel. When you exit the wave you’re in most likely 5ft deep water. It’s why the wave comes down so hard and fast as well as why it’s so dangerous. My point was simply that it’s not actually 1 ft deep on a surfable day
That must be low tide and the waves that are surfed don't break on that shallow part they break further out. Still it's interesting to see under there.
the reef is no joke....just slight contact with human flesh can sometimes be not good!....learned this from experience.....brings an entirely new meaning to "scrub it,kook!"

Not so mate, there are quite a few perfect waves in Indo, when conditions are right! Other places too, though ime much more familiar with the Indo region than anywhere else.
Whenever the winter swell comes in the amount of water being pushed in makes it 5 to 7 ft deep. However where the wave starts to break you can get more Than 6 to 8 ft of water. Whenever you get behind and Launched off the lip you can see people diving feets first from a 10 to 15 or even higher face, if the reef was less than 6 ft of water, everyone would be breaking something everyday!

There are certain areas inside of the wave. If you fall into the shockwave it throws you out the back. Sometimes you just have to take the pounding.
