I had a work colleague (former military special forces) who once told me “A Rolex is a plane ticket home from anywhere in the world”. With that advice I bought my first Rolex, a Submariner, in 1989. Still have that watch. I paid $2,100 and it’s now worth around $10,000. Great advice!

The guy that bought the 1980s Rolex from 47th Street here in NYC please listen and hope you get to read this. I live in New York, don’t take that piece to Rolex! Take to the many vintage specialists we have around the city, Rolex will replace your original parts with new ones, that will lower the value and originality of the piece. Also, vintage is a whole different beast with watches, you got to know your stuff there’s lots of tricksters out there.
If you take your Rolex to Rolex for service and any parts that need replacing, they will replace them with the parts for that specific movement. In this case it’s a 3135 movement. This will not decrease the value if it happens to need a new balance wheel, escapement or otherwise. You have to tell Rolex not to polish, replace dial or hands. Anything with the movement won’t affect the value.
