Autobots: we defeated the decepticons! Beachcomber: .... *I honestly wanna take out all your Sparks for destroying this beautiful forest* Autobots: . . . Oh
1. Beachcomber's a pacifist. 2. The Decepticons pretty much already ravaged the glen before the rest of the Autobots got there. 3. Beachcomber was the one who ended up directing the Autobots to the pool of Electrum once they got there, presumably knowing full well that the Autobots would die at the hands of the Decepticons without it.
Beachcomber's always been one of my favorite Autobots, so much so that I used to pretend he got the Matrix after Optimus and became "Beachimus Prime." I'm really glad he's gotten a little more attention lately, and I'm definitely going to keep an eye on that golden version!
"Freedom is the Right of all Sentient Beings and the preservation of civilization and the environment isa prerequisite to true peace." - is what I would imagine Beachimus Prime would say.
What I like most about your content is, even when there’s little to go off of, your voice doesn’t convey that. Even though I can see the video length, you make it seem like this could go on for 30 minuets, in a good way.
Poor Beachcomber doesn't get much recognition these days (apart from in that old 'Golden Lagoon' Episode, of course). Personally, I like him, and I'd gladly love to have that new Legends figure of him. :)
Honestly, Tigatron in the Beast Wars cartoon seemed to be an updated concept of his personality. Particularly in the episode two parter "the Trigger" where he encounters a floating island that is basically a paradise, but actively lashes out and attacks anyone who brings a weapon. It eventually played out that Black Arachnia got into the seat of power and took control of the weapon systems and headed for the maximal base. In the end of part 2, he has arguably his most memorable line as he stares at the power core of the island with his gun in hand: "May I be forgiven... for what I *must* do..." and he then destroys the power core, causing the island to plummet from the sky and shatter (sending a signal to the Vok). There is some celebration, but when everyone questions what the signal was about Tigatron explicitly chews everyone out; "A *message!* We were given a *paradise!* All we had to do was live there in peace! But we proved unworthy... and the paradise is no more..." Optimus Primal, likely making a reference to Beachcombers very episode here, says "Yeah... it's an old story... Maybe some day we'll learn."
I like Beachcomber a lot, especially the Bing Crosby inspiration for his voice. I'm thinking of making a Transformers fanfiction and maybe I'll give Beachcomber and some other underused bots some better quality time.
I am kind of surprised that Beachcomber was never given a major role among the Autobots in any Transformers media in which they were on Earth. He'd be a great character to interact with human allies, considering his love of geology. I owned the G2 Beachcomber toy, and I always felt his green and orange color scheme was better-looking than his blue-and-white one. It fit him better if that made sense.
Thanks for another great video. I always liked Beachcomber, but I never got a "hippie" impression from him. He was simply a character who never wanted to fight, but would do so because he had to. In a way, I think of him like I do Hawkeye of MASH, nonviolent individuals stuck in a war that they only partake of to try and limit the damage. Its a shame he hasn't gotten more coverage over time, but as you pointed out, he was the star of the Golden Lagoon, and those two words still haunt me. "We won..."
THE W0LF B0Y I agree. Perhaps Chris might finally tap into the third party toys of transformers, which Reflector does not have a lot of as it is, but it'll certainly help to lengthen the video and shed more light onto the character, perhaps! ^^"
What made _The Golden Lagoon_ so good is that, whether intentional or not, the moral of the story is open to interpretation. Well, at least I enjoy it because I don't get the *only* the simple "War is bad!" message from it. Beachcomber was trying to preserve nature and avoid seeing a resource used for violence *but* in the end, the combination of his action and *inaction* merely caused conflict escalation, destroying that which he sought to protect. I like that nuance. It is the kind of thing that makes me ask if there were solutions Beachcomber never considered, such as working with the Autobots to quickly ascertain how vital the Electrum (cartoon version) was to the local environment. Why? Since most earth life I know of doesn't depend on such a thing, what if the Autobots could have just drained the lagoon, refilled it with regular water, and... well... even if the place could eventually produce more Electrum, I'm guessing it would have been too slow for the 'cons to care about the place. Would it have worked? Probably not, since we wouldn't have an episode without such conflict. ;)
Otaku I see Beachcomber keeping the lagoon a secret having to do with the fact something of that power could be taken by either side and use it in their warfare. They would find a way to use it a weapon and probably use it as a coating on their armour plates when they find the means to prolong it's effects. After all, something that can render you invisible for a time is the kind of thing that governments would want during a war and will fight tooth and nail to get it before their enemies claims it first.
Of course the main question I always had about the lagoon is where did the electrum originated from, how it got to Earth and how did it went unnoticed for millions of years untill Beachcomber stumbled upon it?
Ray Vankman, I understand *why* Beachcomber kept it a secret but, especially seeing what the results were, can you really argue it was the *best* approach? Even a "good" approach? *Sticking with what we know,* Beachcomber finds a natural resource *by accident* because the Autobots and Decepticons are *already* fighting about other stuff nearby. Just keeping quiet about the Electrum wasn't going to keep either side away; it was relying on *luck* that no one else would stumble across it the same way Beachcomber himself did. Using the electrum to protect oneself also wasn't a problem; the devastation we saw was because of the *exact* events of the episodes. If the Autobots could safely harvest it - and we didn't need to return things to the status quo by the end of the episode - there is at least a chance they'd use it responsibly and *not* devastate the environment around them with excess reflected Decepticon attacks. XP The battle we saw was *directly* because Beachcomber couldn't protect the site alone, allowing 'Cons to get it and use it, necessitating the Autobots themselves take a dip and the two sides running into each other at the site!
I assumed that the Electrum was naturally occurring. It wasn't the only fantastic "natural resource" the series used that doesn't exist in the real world (or at least has radically different properties in the real world).
The Basics is like Saturday morning cartoons for me now. Thank you for all your hard work. Also: I love the irony of him sharing a voice actor with Skeletor.
I really like that little line of Autobots: Warpath, Cosmos, Beachcomber, Powerglide, Seaspray, all of them were treading new territory for the Autobots in 1985, and all of them had a lot of personality for relatively minor characters.
Beachcomber has always been my favorite from the very beginning from the first time I saw him on the old show I fell in love with his character. He fits me to a T he would keep me in line. I love his character so much, and I cannot describe it in words here I would be here forever, he is so underrated it is stupid and I have wanted a figure figure of him forever and have never been able to found one and this video tells me why because they don’t have any more out right now in 2024, so yeah, this character has always been my favorite
As Beachcomber's voice was based on Bing Crosby, it's a real shame and truly wasted opportunity not to have had another Autobot's voice based on Bob Hope. C'mon, you know you'd watch ROAD TO IACON
I still think it's messed up that Beachcomber's spotlight episode was about the golden lagoon and NOT using it just so that a few decades later he'd get a golden recolor about him (and others) using the golden lagoon.
I was genuinely surprised when I saw him make a cameo in Armada in his G1 form. Even though is role in media very minor, I'm glad the Golden Lagoon is still considered one of the best episodes of G1. Besides, I'm a sucker for robots who love nature (like the Iron Giant and Bastion from Overwatch)

They should give him some kind of small Solo Advanture in the Comics. Maybe let him somhow land on a warey beutiful Planat full of Fascinating WIldlife and Plants. Just a small Story where we with Beach Comber can explore the Wonders Natior has in store for us.
I would love to have Beachcomber as a friend. He would love it here in Monterey. Beachcomber(amazed): Hey, hey, this is my kind of town. Thanks for tellin' me about this place, Lizzy. Me (pleased): You're welcome, Beachcomber. Want me to show you the Aquarium and Lover's Point? Beachcomber(happy): Like, for sure ,my friend (he transforms, activates his holoform, and I climb into the shotgun seat of his dune buggy vehicle mode. As we drive off, Beachcomber has a hard time keeping his optics on the road because of all the beautiful scenery.) Beachcomber(fascinated): Man, ya sure are lucky to live in such a pretty place. Me(proud): I know right? My dad told me that both Monterey and Pacific Grove are some of the hottest real estate markets in the state.
The Golden Lagoon is one of the best eps of G1, that's why there's never been another Beachcomber. When it's done perfect the first time, why bother with a second?

The TF equivalent of drunkenness is being "over-energized," when they've consumed too much and their systems go a little goofy as a result of the energy overload. Beachcomber is precious.❤ He's a wonderful pacifist character. Even he isn't coward. I love even Fluttershy from MLP. Sadly in G1 Beachcomber suffered a greater loss, even for Earth. I hope to watch him on new continnuities as part of some autobot team.
How about the basics on triple changers and similar multi form bots like the robots in disguise (the old one not the aligned one) megatron, dude had like 12 modes.
You really think that the TFA staff weren’t fond of Beachcomber? Well, they had plans to kill him in the hypothetical season 4! And, if they couldn’t do it there, they would try and kill him in season 5! Wow, they really wanted to kill that “metal dude”!
Beachcomber was my favorite toy as a kid, because I could take him anywhere. I was pretty excited to see the PotP version and had to pick it up as soon as I could. Hopefully they do more to develop the character in the future. :)
Interesting! In the Star Wars universe there's a metal with all the properties of gold that's also referred to as electrum. It's what the emitter & accent parts of Mace Windu's lightsaber hilt are made from. I wonder if they got the idea from Transformers or if it predates both?
Transformers is one of those franchises that ends up with more characters than they know what to do with at times. As far as I can tell, none of them deserve such little treatment, but only so much can be done officially. I'm glad that I found your channel. It's always fascinating to learn more about a franchise that played a big role in my childhood.
Even though his g1 toy was discontinued he still apeared in the season 3 episode five faces of darkness along with a few others like pipes warpath and powerglide
Instead of Bumblebee as the humans guardian maybe Beachcomber could take that role in a future incarnation? I think it could be a fitting job for him and allow his character some time in the spotlight for a change.
Chris McFeely Damn. Was always fascinated by the box art. I'd sit a box on my lap and stare at them. Started notice different styles too. Pretty sure it was more than one person. Hmmm... There goes my weekend. Will research.
This is one of the few times that I’ll say that the Gobots figure was more appealing with Buggyman. Beachcomber is the best name, and he was a great character on screen, but the original toy looked like a throwaway idea.
Autobots: we defeated the decepticons!
Beachcomber: .... *I honestly wanna take out all your Sparks for destroying this beautiful forest*

Yes, I totally agree with you!!
beachcomber episdode was one of the sadest endings ive ever seen a cool kind hearted charicter :-(

My fave Character
I could see Jeff Bennett doing him.
Though the episode itself was kinda stupid
Beachcomber so kind good guy autobot just like pony pegasus fluttershy with "My little pony"
Poor Beachcomber doesn't get much recognition these days (apart from in that old 'Golden Lagoon' Episode, of course). Personally, I like him, and I'd gladly love to have that new Legends figure of him. :)
Kryten Prime I'm sad no one shot him by "accident"
I think they're gonna make a new toy of him
Yes, and he's wonderful!
Beachcomber is one of the reasons why my opinion on Animated has soured over the years.
Yeah, what the hell was their problem with him? What’s wrong with wanting to protect a forest? 😐
Honestly, Tigatron in the Beast Wars cartoon seemed to be an updated concept of his personality. Beachcomber is heavily underused, so I hope more gets done with him.
@ beast boy that's a perfect fit for hippie Beachcomber
RunAmuck agreed
I could totally see him being in, say, Rescue Bots Academy. Not sayin I don't want him in a mainline show, just seems like he'd fit that show well

Golden Lagoon was my first episode and still probably my favorite. A poignant (if heavy) story that can be seen as a microcosm of the whole series
Andrew Herbig ....indeed that episode was what the kids would say 'woke'
Basics on Reflector, that's gonna be short episode 😂

Don't forget Cringer and Man-at-Arms as well [i'm pretty sure there are others too]...
Wait, the guy who voiced Beachcomber also voiced Skeletor? Wha?! :O
Nothing yes. Alan Oppenheimer voiced Beachcomber, Seaspray, Warpath, and Breakdown.
If the Transformers series had continued into 1989, Alan Oppenheimer could of voiced Bludgeon, giving him a voice similar to Skeletor.
I'm *SO* happy he's getting the spotlight in Skybound's Transformers!

I really like that little line of Autobots: Warpath, Cosmos, Beachcomber, Powerglide, Seaspray, all of them were treading new territory for the Autobots in 1985, and all of them had a lot of personality for relatively minor characters.
The newest Beachcomber toy is in the Legacy toyline, complete with a paradise parakeet accessory from the Golden Lagoon episode.
Beachcomber is my spirit robot
I always liked Beachcomber he's just so chill. The kind of bot you could befriend and hang out with. Love my POTP figure too.

As Beachcomber's voice was based on Bing Crosby, it's a real shame and truly wasted opportunity not to have had another Autobot's voice based on Bob Hope. C'mon, you know you'd watch ROAD TO IACON
There were at least two more possible ways for Beachcomber to be killed in Animated. I wonder why they hated him so much. He's such a cool bot.
Hippies stink to them?
“The golden lagoon” is my favourite episode because it shows what the auto bots are fighting for. And how things can so easily be lost in the process.
I still think it's messed up that Beachcomber's spotlight episode was about the golden lagoon and NOT using it just so that a few decades later he'd get a golden recolor about him (and others) using the golden lagoon.
It's 3:19 am and i just got home from my bartending job here in Austin.
Always rad to watch one of these before bed. Thanks!
My suggestion: Star Saber and his legacy as Japan’s most popular Transformer and his adaptation into American media.
Pio Nepomuceno And how James Roberts butchered the character horribly.

The golden lagoon episode made me sad at the end. I just rewatched it on saturday.
Beachcomber, in my opinion, has always been underrated and somewhat underutilized. I will eventually find the G1 version of him somewhere.
thanks to this ep we have tigertron and animated prowl! And they are far away to be hippies! Memorable one ep character!
Hey its buh buh buh Beachcomber, let's see if I can learn me your language
I have him in his new look toy. I think he cool man.
I have five of his new toy.
Will you do a Basics on the Japanese continuity, 3H comics, & Fun Publications?
Eventually!
Chris McFeely so just curious is there a "true" ending to the G1/Beast Era?
I suppose to my mind Beast Machines is the "true" ending, but really BWII and BW Neo both take place thousands of years in the future after it, and those series end with Maximals and Predacons working together to rebuild Cybertron after Unicron attacks, which is a rather nice ending to the whole saga. It - and the consequenes of it, like Lio Convoy becoming "Great Convoy" - are actually, unless I'm misremembering, the last major events in the whole known Japanese G1 timeline.
Chris McFeely I wonder how exactly Cybertron returned to it's original metal state. Maybe evolution had occurred along with the Maximals and Predacons regaining their robotic appearance again but still keep some transorganic components.

HIPPIE

Beachcomber was COOL. I had the G1 toy when i was 4 yrs old, lost it somewhere, bought the green G2 in 93 when i was 12, and have kept it ever since.
That was one of my favorite episodes from generation 1 series.
Beachcomber making a comeback babyyyy
the new skybound issue made such a nice character for him ngl
We need more people like Beachcomber in real life

They did already buddy
*Next make basics on sideways!*
They did
Beachcomber was my favorite toy as a kid, because I could take him anywhere. I was pretty excited to see the PotP version and had to pick it up as soon as I could. Hopefully they do more to develop the character in the future. :)
New figure is awesome
im currently dreaming that Beachcomber would appear in the rebooted Travis Knight Bumblebee universe in any of its possible sequels
Interesting! In the Star Wars universe there's a metal with all the properties of gold that's also referred to as electrum. It's what the emitter & accent parts of Mace Windu's lightsaber hilt are made from. I wonder if they got the idea from Transformers or if it predates both?
Never mind, turns out it's a real thing. Electrum is an alloy consisting of gold, silver & traces of copper.
Transformers is one of those franchises that ends up with more characters than they know what to do with at times. As far as I can tell, none of them deserve such little treatment, but only so much can be done officially. I'm glad that I found your channel. It's always fascinating to learn more about a franchise that played a big role in my childhood.
I hope you'll get around to doing a Basics video on *Sideways* and *Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime* soon?
Beachcomber: seriously underrated and chilled kind of character
NEED MORE BEACHCOMBER!!!! Also, I could've sworn he was a biologist.
Raymond Brasuell he could be both if he were a paleontologist!
Hey could you do the basics on the constucticons they are my favourite of the combiners and my favourite transformer of all time is mixmaster.
Geology would be a difficult science to learn on Cybertron.
I hope we get a The Basics on TFNation... Or a video about what you've been doing there
Basics of DRIFT please 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
My only Beachcomber toy is 2008 TF Universe Legends Class one. Man, deeply wishing to find new POTP Legends Class Beachcomber.. *Shaking fist.*
I want a chill episode with Beachcomber, Jazz, and Blaster
Even though his g1 toy was discontinued he still apeared in the season 3 episode five faces of darkness along with a few others like pipes warpath and powerglide
Also beachcomber appeared on Cybertron in the first episode of transformers Armada
Will we get a Starscream basics anytime soon?
They did already buddy
Let's be honest, the mini bots were actually GoBots that Prime lured into Skids's van mode by offering them Energon Candy.
Very cool. Can you do Basics on G2? Also if possible one on 3rd party Transformers.
Instead of Bumblebee as the humans guardian maybe Beachcomber could take that role in a future incarnation? I think it could be a fitting job for him and allow his character some time in the spotlight for a change.
I love Transformers...
My first Minibot. Thanks Chris. Who did the original box art? Perhaps another episode?
Unknown, alas! POSSIBLY Matt Walsh, who did the 84 Mini-Vehicle artwork? But it's not nearly got the same wacked-out proportions or geometry.
Chris McFeely Damn. Was always fascinated by the box art. I'd sit a box on my lap and stare at them. Started notice different styles too. Pretty sure it was more than one person. Hmmm... There goes my weekend. Will research.

0:23 looks like the photographers had as much trouble keeping Cosmo's head out as I have keeping my toys head out
“Damn Hippies!” - Richard Nixon
This is one of the few times that I’ll say that the Gobots figure was more appealing with Buggyman. Beachcomber is the best name, and he was a great character on screen, but the original toy looked like a throwaway idea.
Beachcomber 4:20, smoke energon every day. Being a chill stoner is no an insult in America outside the most conservative circles.
Worst part is, that in TFA they very much intended to murder him...because they REALLY hated him.
Why not Sentinel getting iced?
An episode on the plant transformer from beast machines might be neat.
1:36 i forgot how he attack his enemy
Silly, ain't it? There'll be something about this in a future "Art of Transformers" episode!
He must have a few Go-Bot genes in his CNA
