If you find yourself in the studio searching for that cinematic lighting.. some of the techniques in this video should be looked at. My approach for commercial lighting is ever evolving, but I will be sticking with this for a little while. I love it. I shot this setup on an arricam LT with multiple kodak film stocks. Can’t wait to share more! In this video I primarily analyze a shot from the arri alexa 35 and a 35mm master prime. I also dive into set a light 3d and how it helped me prepare for this project. Saturday morning perfect description. Reminded me of brunch light say at Bubbys in Tribecca many moons ago sitting at a window seat on a bright crisp morning in new york across the table from my soon to be wife. Huge day light source from the floor to ceiling windows on the street side where everyone wants to sit on a day like that and the light falling off into the rest of the room with little or no return. 100%. I love it. Bout time. When I was recording myself talking for this video I mentioned TikTok adding good old normal horizontal and that I felt it was in response to vision pro. Either way, I’ll take it, and I’m excited about it, even though I am not a TikTok user outside of occasionally posting random videos just to test it out.
I work with "set a light 3d" since one year. when you get used to it, it's really fast to build up a set. that said, its really perfect to push your way of lighting forward, because you can tweak your setting without the pressure on set before. often I don't have a pre-lighting day, so its one decision I have to make - maybe I can tweak it a litte bit - but that's it. with this software, it gives you the possibilities to push forward and try out something new, or just to improve your well known basic setting.
Yep. 100% agreed. It lets you experiment quickly, from home, land on something nice, and arrive on set prepared. I truly love it.

Honestly never considered putting an edge on the same side as they soft key, looks great!
I like the look. Sometimes, like in an interview, I place a tube more over the top. But for something like this with a big source, I like a back light to be an extension of that :)

Did u need full output from three sky panels, or did u use three in order to make the source bigger/more even spread? Would the look be different if swapping the triple sky panel for a point source like a 600 or 1200d behind the 8x muslin?
I used 3 at full power to get enough output to shoot as stopped down as possible. I think the 30 in the back was around 70% for some shots. I did not use 3 to make the source bigger, only for more power, but it likely made the source more even. on paper, a 600d with a Fresnel will be brighter, but I would need to test in real life as the distances to fill the frame may differ, as the sky panels could be pretty close. while im sure there will be some differences in the look, I think it would be similar. ive even used a 300/600d through 8x8, people talking to camera and achieved similar great results. I think the real star of the show here was the bleached muslin.
The other day I bounced a 200x into an Impact 7’ silver umbrella with diff (my Briese knockoff) and then thru bleached muslin from Amazon 🥲

What are your suggestions if you don't have the luxury of seeing the space you're shooting in as you did here? Do you have basic setups that you have done where you can quickly reference unknown parameters? Say a large room vs. a small room or a room that has a window in it vs. all wall. How are your lighting packages designed in this manner or are you just good enough at this point to know what you will need based on discussions with the client?
I always get a sense of where we are shooting. if I need to light a scene, I need to know where we will be. if I can't physically go there for a scout, I will ask for dimensions and photos!

when you work on this software are you in a well lit room or a very dark room on your laptop? i would only imagine the surrounding light around your screen (peripheral vision of the room light) would get to you and how you view the light on screen.
I use it in all sorts of environments. It’s kind of like looking through a camera. There are exposure tools like false color and a histogram so you can make sure your exposure is right in any conditions or at any screen brightness :)
I have a friend who's working on blender to prepare his sets. Have you ever done it with this software ? Thank you for the great video

At 0:18 there is a 3D video render. Does that "set a light" program allow you to make video as well as photography?
Currently you cannot make moving images in the software, but you can move around in 3D space, set up scenes for motion with a film camera, dial in its settings, and use actual film lights that match up with the real lights in real life. It is incredibly useful!

Hey man, thanks for your videos ! Do you prefer use direct diffuse lighting than bounce lighting ? and why? :)
Hey thanks so much. It really depends on the scenario I am in. I typically bounce out of necessity, when I need to get a light source in an area that I cannot place a light. One could also bounce if let’s say they only have a fresnel, and need a bigger source, could bounce off wall. In the studio I typically shoot through an 8x8!

I thought that a bounce lighting will always be more diffuse than a direct lighting has equivalent width.
But i imagine a bounce light is always more difficult to control than a direct light ! (Intensity, spill)
Bounced is very soft, but does spill all around. With a square diffusion, you can have a source that is a little more exact. I do both. Depends on the room and the situation. Also you can control bounced light, if you bounced off a wall for example you could tape black material around an area to reduce some spill. Kind of like a skirt.

I feel like this is overkill for “perfectly imperfect.”
What would you have done? It’s so simple! A large soft source and a harder source from the back! Needed enough exposure for 100ASA at a 5.6!

@Bobsmithabc oh I see what you’re saying, and yes you can totally do that. In this scenario, I just wasn’t loving what I had planned, and re did it and landed on something simple. It was the messing around that led me to “keep it simple”
