As much as I would've loved to see Sir William name the loco, I think Lady McAlpine was brilliant, adding her anecdotes to the occasion... I don't think I've ever seen you smile so much, or waffle on as much haha 😂 Here's to the little 48! 🍻🥂
Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels If you can would you mind looking at my video of the middy? Was taken at the 2018 Wartime Gala I think before your Ruston arrived. It’s on my list to revisit in 2020. ruclips.net/video/kV94HGaEjts/видео.html PS: the middy stuff starts at 12:14
I think it fits her...perfectly. I think wherever Sir William is he's smiling...perhaps moreso that it's not some fancy, flashy mainline engine, but a simple yeoman of a diesel that bears his name. I never met the man, but from what little I've read of him, he seems the type to be more impressed by that! I love that Lady McAlpine seems to be having an absolute blast on the old engine too. I hope one day I can do something similar for the one surviving steam engine of my favorite (American) railroad: My grandfather loved trains and that same company, and got me interested in trains through it, in many ways. My fervent dream is one day I can climb aboard her cab with his picture in my vest pocket, just to say, "We did it." (Apologies profusely...I did not mean for that to go on as much of a tangent as it did).
I really like that idea too! I hope he knew just how happy it had made me to be able to get her! Lady McAlpine was just brilliant. She really made the day. That would be a lovely thing to do! Best of luck! Which Loco and railroad?
@@lmm its the Missouri Kansas Texas, MKT or "Miss Katy" as her fans call her. the engine is their number 311, an 1870s 4-4-0 that worked until the 50s on the massive branchline in Oklahoma, the Northwest District. Miss Katy never had the biggest steamers (hell, her biggest steam loco was a 2-8-2) or the flashiest trains, but damn was she the best. The engine actually has the distinction of being the only locomotive to have arrived at its museum under its own steam. she was backdated and used as a touring prop to celebrate the railroads history in the 50s, that's why she survived. the Katy Railroad Historical Society (of which I am a member) is slowly cosmetically restoring her to her 30s-50s configuration.
Great to see it finished. Mabey you should consider installing vacuum brake on it in the far future. I've always had an intrest in Sir william mcalpine as my dad was present at the 1988 Aussteam 88 and traveld behind 4472 on a trip from Melbourne/spencer street to seymour. Love the vid mate it brought a tear to my eye.😊😊👍
I've played with the idea of vac, but installing is expensive, she never had it, and would rarely get to use it. Never say never though! Oh that's quite the thing to have done! Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. Not sure if you knew this but a Class 60 numbered as 60008 was named by the man himself in 2006 and there is a Class 90 that is also named after him. 60008 is and has been stored at Toton Traction Depot since 2007 and I think GBRF has bought that one either as a donor for parts or as a standby locomotive. If you wanted that one, it might be best to contact GBRF or DB Cargo as they might sell it to you mate in the future. Its been 12 years in open storage so you might be able to negotiate a good price for it if they are willing to sell it on to you mate.
Yeah, I knew that there were a couple of mainline locos with his name - I rather suspect that they would be wayyyy out of my price range, and I'm not part of any societies that would be able to give them a home. :(
Have you ever had any experience with deisel-electric locomotives? Almost all switcher/shunter locomotives in the US all are electric drivetrains, and of course they are much larger than switchers in the UK but you know, America, very big, everything is big, everyONE is big as well. :)

Thank you very much! I have had lots of help!
Very fitting choice of name. Great to see the loco is now being used and cared for.
It's nice to actually have it be useful!
Well done Lawrie, I met Sir William in 2011 at Trinity House London . along with Prince Michael of Kent. Sir William a nice guy that shared the same interest as me.
This is my collection, I also work in the rail industry and have worked on most types of Diesel locomotives including PWM651 , a Ruston shunter. I have a Ruston engine in my road roller ruclips.net/video/6AukDsePZy4/видео.html
Sir William was a lovely chap, very much made me feel like he was one of us.
Oh that's quite an impressive collection! I'd love a go in the bigger of the road rollers! That looks awesome!
@@lmm We got some very big kit in preservation in my area including a massive Cat 666 scraper ruclips.net/video/Z4U0mNbvh4Q/видео.html
Now that is mega cool!
@@lmm A couple of years have gone, I was reunited with PWM651 after 22 years and drove it, Your Rustons big brother ruclips.net/video/HAd3smEy0lM/видео.html
Brilliant loco - brilliant gesture. Top work.
It's a super little engine! Thank you very much!
I love this film, so much love for a little loco and the enthusiasm is infectious! Any chance I could life a few of the sounds of the loco at work to put with a model railway video I am planning please?
That's awesome. Congrats on finally getting a good name for it.
Thank you! I'm really really excited by it. Lovely name to have on the thing - I'm very proud
As much as I would've loved to see Sir William name the loco, I think Lady McAlpine was brilliant, adding her anecdotes to the occasion... I don't think I've ever seen you smile so much, or waffle on as much haha 😂
Here's to the little 48! 🍻🥂
She was absolutely superb. It was a truly special day.
I was very happy indeed.
Awesome loco. I’ll have to come film it running soon, I only live a few miles from the middy so it’s a nice Sunday out
I'll try to let people know if it's going to be out and about.
I rarely know tbh 😂
It's a nice railway and worth going to anyways.
Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels If you can would you mind looking at my video of the middy? Was taken at the 2018 Wartime Gala I think before your Ruston arrived. It’s on my list to revisit in 2020. ruclips.net/video/kV94HGaEjts/видео.html PS: the middy stuff starts at 12:14
Great story, well done!
Thank you very much!
Beautifully done Lawrie, think we could get a look at that green and yellow lined fowler?
I'm hoping to - else there are some elsewhere that are possible
I think it fits her...perfectly. I think wherever Sir William is he's smiling...perhaps moreso that it's not some fancy, flashy mainline engine, but a simple yeoman of a diesel that bears his name. I never met the man, but from what little I've read of him, he seems the type to be more impressed by that! I love that Lady McAlpine seems to be having an absolute blast on the old engine too.
I hope one day I can do something similar for the one surviving steam engine of my favorite (American) railroad: My grandfather loved trains and that same company, and got me interested in trains through it, in many ways. My fervent dream is one day I can climb aboard her cab with his picture in my vest pocket, just to say, "We did it."
(Apologies profusely...I did not mean for that to go on as much of a tangent as it did).
@@lmm thanks for the reply. And i see that the ruston 48's big brother in background is having a repaint.
Yeah, they're using some of the left over paint from mine. Hopefully we'll have the pair of them in green for next year.
Not yet - though hopefully that's going to change in the new year!
Lawrie needs to model this in OO gauge. Hornby made a Ruston 48 I believe.
fab stuff Lawrie well done fella
Thank you very much!
Congratulations Lawrie! A fitting name.
Thank you very much.
It just seemed like the right thing to do!
Very enjoyable.
Thank you
Not gonna lie you have done extremely well with it
Thank you, I'm really very proud!
👍congrats on this. 1:02 as normal in the UK
What is your plan for the christmas you prommised lady Mcalpine you would do?
Thank you - it could have been worse, could have been a total wipe out! I'm trying to make something happen, we'll see!
@@lmm 😂
Love to see more of the Ruston 48
It'll keep cropping up as things happen with it!
Thank you LMM and are you aware of the New Ruston 48 Hornby Model Railways has made. Does also come in R&H Green
Is that the lined out one?
It does look rather smart!
I'm new to the channel, I recognise the locomotive. It's the only name you could give the locomotive and a nice addition to the locomotive's story.
Thank you - she already had the name Sir William when I purchased her, the full name just seemed like the logical way to go.
It looks very smart 😂
@@lmm Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels I know, thats how I recognised it! I love the green. Wasn't it a rusty red colour? I joked with somebody about buying that exact locomotive. You have done a sterling job and I am speechless.
Yes, very faded red. If you look back through our videos there is one of the collection of it from Fawley Hill in the condition you'd remember!
