Hi Marcus, Just a follow up to my issue controlling Cakewalk. I just came across a RUclips video showing how to control Cakewalk using my phone. You need to install an ap “rtpMIDI” on your computer. This is a free software download. This sets up a virtual midi connection via WiFi to work with Cakewalk. Then I downloaded a paid ap “TouchDAW” to my phone. I now can control Cakewalk on my phone and works very well. This ap was $4.99 and only available on Android devices. This maybe helpful to others having the same issues I was having. Thank you Marcus for all your videos and helping us all!
Thank you for the video. I have an X32 and I am using Cakewalk. But not with the DAW button. Is it as simple as ON and OFF on the DAW button (when configured of course) to shift from one configuration to the other? I am using for example Local IN 1-16 for synth, vocals, guitars and 17 to 24 for the MIDI CARD (return from computer) so I can playback and mix what I recorded on Cakewalk... Will I still be able to do that instantly?
Marcus, at the setup connection (min approx 4.22-4.58) I cannot see any IP address between the X32 and PC (having installed all the audio/usb drivers from Behringer and cakewalk via bandlab). You have assumed that we all will be at the same place together, but I cannot go any further forward until I know (beginner) how to connect the PC and X32 - please provide trouble shoot in this regard or link to ensuring one has taken all necessary steps to connect the X32 with PC (using Cakewalk) e.g. what manual IP address would one type in etc ? cheers bud - love your work nonetheless !
I am so sorry this response has taken so long. I have not been making videos in months for my RUclips channel because I have had no time to devote to internet projects. Work is finally starting to slow down. As to your question troubleshooting can be a pain in the butt. This is where you start. 1. Check the Ethernet cable to be sure it is working when plugged into the computer. To test the cable tray plugging your computer into a router via Ethernet and see if the computer connects. 2. make sure you are connection via the Ethernet output on the mixer and not the Ultranet or AES outputs as these outputs look the same as the Ethernet output. 3. Try typing the ip address manually into the X32 edit app. To get to the ip address on the mixer go to the mixer and press the settings button. scroll over to the network tab and type that ip address into the app. 4. If all of this fails try using a router. Plug your computer into a router or use wireless and then plug the mixer into the router via Ethernet port. Then try step 3 again if needed. If after all of this it still does not work then contact customer support on Behringer's website. it may be a hardware issue.
Outstanding series, invaluable, I am swapping out the Yamaha O2R and need a brain upgrade too - Thanks One Eyed Dog Studio Services is rising from the dead lol :)
Thanks. Was looking for this information and kind of find out myself how it works using Studio One and Reaper. But good to get a confirmation viewing this video. What I did not find out was how to do panning from the X32 control surface in the DAW. Do you know?
I don't know how you would do this with other DAW applications but I do know that this is possible in Cakewalk. You would need to make an additional control surface in the preference box under midi for the X32 mixer. You make a basic act midi control surface and use the Behringer drivers for the input and output. Use the midi learn function to teach the mixer how to use the pans and any other buttons you want the mixer to control. It is OK to have more than one midi control surface per device. I have done it and it works. At least it works in Cakewalk, I am not sure about other DAW apps, but I think it will do fine
Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge. I would like to use my X32 MIX on my iPad to control Cakewalk from my isolation room. Don’t know if it is possible since you show using multiple button pushes to activate certain features. I would like to arm channels, record and playback from my iPad. Thanks.
I am not sure how you would do that, but if you are going to use your iPad you would need to plug the ethernet cable from the mixer into a router dedicated to your studio. Then you would plug the computer into the router via ethernet. Don't use the same router everyone else in the house uses. Let me know if you get it working. I really don't use iPads.
@@marcuscurtismusic Hi Marcus; Do I need to select the RTP MIDI setting in Cakewalk instead of the card MIDI? I have always had my computer, the x32, hardwired and my iPad is connected thru the wireless. This ethernet/router is only for my recording gear. My isolation room is 20 feet from my console. Now I have to give my music a 30 second lag to give me time to get to the isolation room to begin recording. Just trying to accomplish the same without having to run a new ethernet cable and drag my computer in with me to record. I tried going back over this video but I am probably missing something. Thanks.
@@jimslusser6606 I think this is a limitation in Cakewalk. Maybe other DAW applications will do this but I am not really sure. As you already know, RTP midi is usually only for ethernet. Cakewalk does not use RTP midi and there is no switch for it. All midi from Cakewalk is sent through the USB port. Most DAW applications (at least the ones I used) do not use ethernet midi either. The Behringer app requires RTP midi. This is the only reason why we need to have an ethernet connection. If you are not using Behringer software to control the mixer then you don't even need to have the RTP midi selection engaged on the mixer. Cakewalk has no RTP setting that can be turned on that I know of. It will only receive data through USB, Firewire, and things of that nature. What I would try is engaging the RTP midi in the mixer itself under the setup button. highlight the midi receive options too. See if you can get your iPad working that way. I long time ago took a different approach to solve the problem you have. It is always hard to record yourself. Starting the recording and getting to your instrument is a real pain. Especially if you are adding drum parts. My solution was to run an HDMI cable from the computer to the area I was recording and hooking up a remote monitor. Then I would use a wireless mouse to start and stop the recordings. I could control undo from there too if I needed to start over. I don't have an I pad and I have not tried using the PC application to control the mixer. I think I will experiment with that and see if I can troubleshoot my way through it. Maybe I can research and do a video about controlling Cakewalk with the mixer, then controlling the mixer with the software that uses RTP midi. I will work on that this weekend. I have used the mixer to control Cakewalk on past projects. but I did not need cables over 20 feet. I just drilled through the wall.
@@marcuscurtismusic I might use your suggestion of a HDMI cable to a remote monitor. Too much fan noise from a PC to put in the isolation room. I really appreciate your expertise and helping out the "newbie" here. I will try several things and let you know. Thanks again.
2 questions: I. How can I use the built in effects in mixing to go back into my daw? So in other words I have my recorder material already in the daw and I’m using the x32 producer as the controller and as I’m mixing on the x32 I want that sound to go back into my daw. Example: Channel 1 is kick drum already recorded. I want to mix that using the effects on the x32, then feed the post fader final mix of the kick drum back into my daw as a single mono track. 2. Is there a way to record in using both analogue outboard gear AND the internal effects on the x32 on the same channel at the same time? Example: I have an 1176 compressor I’m using as an insert via aux 1 on input 1 (channel 1) of the x32 to record in vocals. But say I also want to use an internal effect from the x32 to record in on channel 1 on top of the 1176 inserted hardware. Is there a way to do that?
I will answer your second question first. Recording effects built into the X32 can be tricky but it can be done. typically when you add effects from the mixer those effects are not passed on through the audio interface. To get around that all you would need to do is use the monitor outs. This is an example of how it should work. Let's say you want to record vocals in channel one. add the effects you want from the mixer. patch a physical connection from the left monitor output into channel 3 of the mixer. From your DAW application record your track from channel 3. With this process you can use any effect in the mixer you want. The limitation is that everyone will need to use head phones. If you run through speakers you will get really bad feedback. If your monitor output is to loud you will also get feedback. So be careful when trying this approach. I have tested this and it works. Just be careful about the feedback. The same approach will apply to question 1. In order to to get the effects built into the mixer you must route through a mixer output and then go back into the mixer using another input on the mixer. This needs to be a physical connection. This is not something you would do in routing. It would be cool if Behringer did a firmware update allowing you to use the effects in the mixer when you record your music. This sounds like a great feature request to make.
@@marcuscurtismusic i appreciate you taking the time. However you misunderstood my questions. I can already record the effects. I actually use the routing inside the machine. You don’t have to do any physical connections the way you do. My question was how can I record using BOTH my analogue gear AND the onboard X32 effects on the same channel at the same time. It only lets me insert one or the other. My 2nd question you misunderstood as well. I’m asking how can I do a mix of my already recorded tracks on the x32 and then get those mixed tracks back to my daw.
@@tjblackartist I am sorry for misunderstanding your question. First question is I am not certain of how to do the first thing you are asking. Anytime I use my analog gear I just plug into the gear before the input on the mixer. I don't really use the effects loops. As far as mixing everything and then bringing those tracks back into your DAW Cakewalk has a feature called bounce to tracks. It will take your mix and make a stereo track right inside of your project in one easy step. You will find this in the window where you can view your recorded tracks also known as the clips pain. Simply highlight the tracks you want by holding down the control button. If you want to mix all the tracks then double click on the first track number to highlight everything. Then click on tracks which is between options and clips. then click on bounce to tracks. from there just follow the instructions. another option is to export the mix like normal and then go to import audio to import the mix you just made. Bounce to tracks is the best solution for submixing or mastering within the same project. This process will make a stereo mix of your tracks without exporting and it will automatically put the mix inside of your project. I will need to research your first question to figure out a solution. sorry for the misunderstanding.
@@marcuscurtismusic ok. So we’re almost there! Lol. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I’m wanting the individual tracks individually mixed from the x32 back into individual tracks in my daw. Not a stereo mix.
@@tjblackartist Ok let me see if I got this right. both questions deal with using the effects built into the mixer in conjunction with your DAW application. You want to export the tracks one at a time through the mixer and then back into your DAW so you can take advantage of the built in effects in the mixer. Is that correct? Let me just say that I don't know if you can do that or not. If I were to try this the first thing I would need to do is change the inputs and the outputs on the mixer itself. I would need to change it to 32 channels in and 32 channels out. Do this before you start your DAW application otherwise you will get an error message. Next in routing you will need to route all 32 of your tracks to an input of your card. After this you will need to route each of the 32 track outputs you recorded to one of the output channels of your DAW. Now you would need to create 32 more tracks for recording and select your inputs accordingly. I don't think this would work. and this is a lot of work just to be able to use the effects built in the board. A faster option would be to use software plugins. You may be interested to know that Beheringer is creating a new DAW platform designed to work with their products. You may be able to do the things you want to do once this new DAW app is available. Best of all, Behringer is giving it away for free. At least I don't know of anyway to do it.
Your best bet is to connect the midi keyboard directly to the computer. Avoid connecting it to the Behringer X-32. The midi connections don't work like a typical midi connection. The midi connections on the back of the mixer is designed for Behringer hardware.
Hi there Curtis, I have just bought the X32 compact, wow what a PAIN IN ASZZZ. I wanted to use it for 3 specific purposes, DAW MIxing/Mastering, DAW with audio interface (Studio/Live recording to computer ) and a stand alone mixer with multi track recording (SDCard\USB) no computer. You bought the Producer, aaugh no channel strips, NONE starter for me, but neither have the assign encoders and only 8 assignable buttons, HOW BLEEDING STUPID. Why did Behringer not put the encoders above the select buttons as any DAW software has so we can assign things like pan? and why oh why of why only use the 8 right hand faders in remote MODE??????? this mixer can be configured to death, EXCEPT for remote mode. Its a great live mixer a good DAW audio interface BUT as a DAW controller for mixing/mastering it falls well short of what it COULD HAVE DONE and DO
I get your frustration, It took me a while to figure out how to do what you see in the video. While Behringer decided to build in a few formats like Mackie Control Unit. You are sort of limited to what you can do Depending on your DAW application. I am not sure what you would use for Studio One. Mackie HUI or Makie MCU. There is also Generic CC. You got to find the format that works best. I experimented with all of those before I figured out that MCU works the best with Cakewalk. I discovered that I could add functions in cakewalk by using something Cakewalk developed called ACT controller. So I am not just limited to MCU. I am sure that Studio One probably has something similar. I am not sure about this but I think the idea is if you need to go beyond what your mixer would do for controlling your DAW then you would get the Behringer X-Touch www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/XTouchC--behringer-by-touch-compact I remember reading in some manual somewhere that the 5 pin midi in and out ports on any X32 could be used for something like the X-touch. This would expand the DAW capabilities. I have not researched it yet so I am not going to say for sure. Right now I am running experiments on the X-live card.
AAAugh trying to decide which Digi mixer to buy nowadays is so complicated. i have the old Yamaha 01x and seriously need to upgrade but to what? I like the Behringer x32 over the wing cos at £2500 its really way OTT, the x32 is but its acceptable. Then I came across the QSC Touchmix Pro and that is like so damn small compared to the x32, granted no actual faders which I have to say is a bummer in my book but its SMALL. Not only that its QSC and anyone who knows Power Amps know there god cos they NEVER break down where as the x32 is a Bahringer, I have plenty of their gear but that cost me a FRACTION of what the x32 will cost.
That decision is a tough one. Each person has a different set of needs. Some people may only need a few tracks. They may never record more then 4 or 8 tracks at once. I purchased my X32 used and at the time I was not looking to record music with it. I already had an audio interface. My frustration came when I could not find any videos on RUclips that showed the information I was looking for. So I had to learn everything by diving into the manuals and trial and error. Once I learned what this mixer did I was amazed at the capabilities. I have had Behringer products in the past and they seemed to be mid level in quality. They were not the worst but they were not the best either. I discover that many components in the X32 were very high quality and they were third party. For example the Midas Preamps on the mixer are simply amazing. I was pleasantly surprised by many of the features that I did not know were there. I stopped using my audio interface and started using the X32 exclusively for recording. I got another mixer for live performance. I started making videos about the information I could not find on RUclips then I started uploading them. It's not really my goal to make money from RUclips. I just want the information out there. Since then, other channels have sprung up with similar info. That's great, the more the merrier in my opinion.
@@eduardsanderschothorst137, yes you can add two sub speakers. Remember the configuration I suggested in this video? 32 in and 8 out?. The physical main outs channels on the X32 are Channels 7 and 8. All you would do is hook your subs up two a set or pair of the other 6 outputs. I say a pair because I mean an odd number and an even number. This would mean left and right. So for example, hook your subs up to 5 and 6, or 3 and 4, or 1 and 2. Then just route from the main bus fader in Cakewalk to the paired subs using a bus send on the main bus strip in Cakewalk. If you don't get it let me know and I will include the solution in a video for you.
The first 8 channels are meant to control the inputs from the instruments while the second 8 channels are meant to control the playback of what has already been recorded. That being said, as I was experimenting with this I discovered that I could make more than 1 controller surface to control the software with the Behringer. This gave me some success in using the first 8 tracks to use like the second 8 tracks. I had to use a different type of control surface. I could not use the Mackie control surface. I had to use a basic Act midi control surface. So it can be done. The problem I found is that this approach seemed to be a little buggy and did not work 100 percent. this is why I did not include this approach in the video. Ultimately I find that using the X32 as a control surface for recording is a great idea and it works well, but using the control surface on the mixer for mixing and mastering does not work very well at all. For workflow reasons, I think it is best to use the app that Behringer provides for mixing and mastering. This allows us to control the mixer from the computer. Then use the Behringer X32 to control the recording process on the computer. But your right, That would be a cool feature if we could use all 16 tracks seamlessly to control Cakewalk

Top Notch My Friend: Wish you were using the XR-18, but that's OK, they are not that far apart...
I think the Midas preamps are some of the best preamps available. One of a few similarities between the x32 producer and the XR-18.
I am not sure about this but I think the idea is if you need to go beyond what your mixer would do for controlling your DAW then you would get the Behringer X-Touch www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/XTouchC--behringer-by-touch-compact
I remember reading in some manual somewhere that the 5 pin midi in and out ports on any X32 could be used for something like the X-touch. This would expand the DAW capabilities. I have not researched it yet so I am not going to say for sure. Right now I am running experiments on the X-live card.
Thank you
You welcome. Let me know if you get stuck anywhere along the way.
Thanks. 👍👍❤️It
You're welcome 😊
@@marcuscurtismusic can you tell me how i can i do 2 subs speakers on my x32 and are there different ways.
It's a shame the first eight channels can't also be tied to DAW control, making a 16 track controller.

Thanks for the heads up.
Great information, but the transitions are painful
Thanks for your input
