It was a CT scan that showed up I had massive bilateral pulmonary embolisms and a mega clot in my main heart valve in 2015. I had very little symptoms apart from feeling very anxious, a racing heartbeat and I felt like I needed an inhaler which started the day before. I thought I’d better get it checked out by my GP as deep down I knew something wasn’t right and she sent me straight up to the hospital because of my heart rate.
I couldn’t understand why they were making a big fuss of me as I felt fine until the dr came in and said we believe you may have a tiny blood clot or had one and it’s gone now but we’d like you to come back first thing in the morning. Even walking down to have the CT scan I felt fine ( just anxious) and literally about 10mins after having it I was called into see the dr and he was shocked as he said he couldn’t believe how absolutely full both my lungs were with clots. Long story short I ended up collapsing as they worked hard on me as my whole body was shutting down and I couldn’t swallow and was panicking. They rushed me to ICU and inserted a central line into my neck which was very traumatic and painful. I can’t remember much else but they brought my husband, children, family in to say goodbye as they said I wouldn’t survive the night. It was a major battle from there and after a month in ICU I slowly went onto make a full recovery but it wasn’t easy as I’m sure you know. I’m a lifer now on Apixaban even though they were unprovoked.
But the main reason I found you was because I’m having a SPECT CT scan tomorrow because I need surgery to de tether my spinal cord and I’m really anxious because they have to put radioactive dye in me through a cannula and then wait 3hrs for it to get inside my bones etc.. and drink lots of water. I’m just wondering if you know if the dye will make me feel really sick as I will be on my own waiting? I’ve experienced the Same as you with my all my past PE scans ( feeling like I needed a wee badly) but think this may be slightly different 🤔 PS.. I’m So glad you are a fellow PE survivor and helping others 🙏🏼♥️

Wow what a story, I hope you are doing ok. I just got back from a second pulmonary function test. Did you CT scan go well? It is hard to comment on how the dye will affect each person but I've never felt sick from it. I hope everything is going ok for you and they got the answers they need to help you.

Can you have ct scan with contrast dye if you have kidney disease?

You should always speak to your doctors about these kinds of issues but looking online the newer contrast dyes aren’t as harmful so people with kidney disease can be scanned. Older contrast agents aren’t recommended so it would depend on the material your local hospital uses. Definitely something only your doctor can speak to.
