Thats a differential. It allows the wheels do spin independently and together which is very important because when a car turns its wheels spin at different speeds
It should be able to change gears just fine. Changing gears is affected by the transmission, while the rear diff is responsible for sending power to the rear wheels. The really problem is whether or not it can drive while in the drive gear.
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 KJV

Something similar happened to my father. He had a Cadillac CTS-V and blew the rear diff casing wide open
One trip to the salvage for a whole rear axle no problem

Mine just clanks when I put in reverse. Should I be worried?😮
Yes. Habe it serviced and replace any fears.or seals that are needed
If the dif is broken, can it prevent the truck from going into drive gear??
