Dawn FM is the stage of infinity, purgatory, the letting go of that mask or character and reaching nirvana with one’s identity. Until then, he’s in purgatory, with this station playing over and over. This album is the first time Jim and Abel’s world collide, two totally separate lives that share many of the same experiences.
The Weeknd recruited Jim on Dawn FM because they shared many of the same struggles. They both went from Rags to Riches. They both came from Canada to an industry that placed others' identities and ideas over who they really are.
Which is why the final track Phantom Regret by Jim, is the perfect send off. “Heaven's for those who let go of regret”, is stated at the end of DAWN FM. Once The Weeknd let’s go of Regret will ultimately be the album, After Life. And you have to wait here if you’re not weightless yet.

Jim Carrey is such a loving and deeply sensitive soul, I feel like bringing him on was a crossover very few people expected, yet it fits so perfectly with Abel's very introspective and self-reflective lyrics
beautifully spoken
This album was way too incredible, Such a mesmerizing journey!
You just proved everything I was already thinking. Been a fan of Abel since House of Ballons and it's insane to see where he is now. Such a true artist that we don't deserve. Thank you for this A1 video
Gasoline is definitely my favorite song on the album 💯✨
Same 80's Vibe
Great video! I'm a big fan of both and I thought I knew everything there was to know about the both of them, but I still learned new stuff from your video. Another interesting connection between the two is that they're neighbors. The Weeknd mentioned in an interview that they can both see and communicate with each other through binoculars.
I would love to hear your thoughts on The Weeknd's old stuff, especially Kiss Land. Keep up the great work!
Woah I know the graphic designer who made the logo on insta and now I’m randomly seeing this on my feed?
Number 23. Don’t forget that phenomenal movie.
Um so where do I start off. So I shedded a lil tears out listening to his album.um made me realize a lot made me realize I’m not alone with these thoughts past relationships with females.it’s just I loose my self and I never knew there was artist that went through the same shit I went through . Feels like I’m covered wit dark energy but then I realize it’s not dark energy it’s my thoughts.
But I’m starting to let go and moving on I did wish u was here wimmie to experience it all
The Mask is legendary fr .🎭
When I heard his name on the album I was like ah is Jim Carrey gonna do a duet with The Weeknd and when I discovered he was just a narrator for The Weeknds album I was like wow this is cool.
I thought dawn fm was a story about The weeknd coming to the end of a constant cycle of finding love and losing it by reflecting on the past after the death of a relationship. Everytime a relationship falls apart he tunes into dawn fm, and all this happens before he ends up dying in a car crash that sends him to jim, who stands at the entrance into the afterlife that was spoken about in the radio station
As always you explained everything perfectly so that even a dummy like understand the great arts... xD
Wow never thought Jim Carey being in Dawn FM had such deep meanings
Bro he’s such a deeply philosophical and woke person you don’t even know
You literally don’t know what’s going on in the world 😂
everything in the weeknd's song and albums have meaning
it'd be stupid if it were meaningless
all subliminal. but sonically pleasing to mask the horror
Yeah, a Satanic one for sure

I knew a little about Jim’s current ‘deeper meaning’ mindset as of late, but didn’t keep up with it much. But when I saw he was on Dawn FM, I knew something amazing was gonna be made.
My personal favorite track on this album is probably "Best Friends." I was especially intrigued by the section in which he says "friends no more, sex as friends no more, you don't want to have sex as friends no more." It falls in line with a theme he explores on "I heard you're married" in which he's casting aside the promiscuous arrogance of casual sex and affairs that Hollywood glorifies.
I also loved how, in "Phantom regret" Jim says that "you've got to be heaven, to see heaven." Jim has become infamous for his belief that he does not really exist, and that Jim Carrey is an idea that we all have. Perhaps this is him saying that it must be more important for us to cast aside our old pains and the masks we were forced to wear, and become the person we truly know that we are.
That’s my favorite song and part too lol
@@booboocachoo5090 then you have good taste
Bro Why You Stole My Mouth Words Same Everything Here The Feelings Express Brother ♥️
@@Ahtesham_ thank you my G
I love that take. Seems pretty fitting.
I loved the epilogue of the album the most: "Phantom Regret" because of it being such a perfect sendoff and ending for this album that will transition into the final of the trilogy. The way Jim talks to Abel here was poetic like someone guiding Abel into the afterlife like the video mentions. Plus Jim's somber tone here juxtaposes who Jim Carrey is known for, it was great.
I love the whole album, it is indeed a masterpiece. How connected an album can make you feel ! The visuals it represents with the tone & lyrics alone ! A movie but story being told. Favorite tracks is Sacrifice/Dontbreakmyheart. All are great though.
I could never sit through a whole album before, i always get restless.
This is one of the only exceptions, a truly unique experience,
Well done Abel!!
I've listen to the whole thing at least 5 times lol
I was rewatching your videos earlier today just because of how well written and edited they are. Super underrated!
i'd have to say my favorite track is "Is There Someone Else?" but man Phantom Regret just sounds so beautiful.
This, this is the type of content I look for. Yes I enjoy Abels music but what has always made him stand out is the world building, story telling, hidden messages. Hes meticulous with his work and I love coming across channels and people who take the time to dissect what he’s doing.
Jesus, that’s deep. It also has amazing artist behind this album as well. I’m still shook that Gunna’s new album outsold Dawn FM, but still that doesn’t mean anything.
I like Dawn FM hands down. Playing it over and over again on Spotify.
dawn fm isnt physically out until jan 29...maybe thats why.
All the celebrities pushed Gunnas album to beat out the Weeknds’. None of the big artists were promoting Dawn like they did DS4L. Also The Weeknd didn’t have any features in his album besides Jim. Sacrifice feels like an all time great smacker though
@@karter1094 lil wayne and tyler were on dawn fm
It only did that in the states. In the rest of the world Dawn FM went #1.
This breakdown is amazing.
Is there someone else?/starry eyes
IMO would’ve been perfect as just one complete song
tracks 7-11 just coasts so perfect 🥰
i mean they fade into another so playing the album its like they're 1 song
the composition of this documentary is immaculate. please keep doing this, you’ll get the attention you deserve eventually
Phantom regret by Jim is just amazing. I always relate to Abel’s music, but this, at this current time in my life is just such a parallel. XOTWOD
Bro im about to cry. This is so beautiful. Makes me appreciate the album even more
Good work here. The genre of content you make grows more concentrated by the day, but you seem to have really found you niche and you do it well.
You find really interesting topics that seems to mostly just be ADJACENT to hiphop, but still incredibly interesting. For example, this video is not about Dawn FM. At this point there are so many reviews and analyses and reactions, there’s no point trying to stand out there. This video is different though. All of your content I’ve seen so far has been so well researched and put together in a way that keeps me interested the whole time.
Keep it up, excited for more.
Dawn FM is just perfect from start to finish. I honestly can't pick a favorite track. While it wasn't produced by Quincy, it definitely had his essence.
great video I'm a film major and the night Dawn FM dropped I watched less than zero so glad I'm not the only one analyzing this album for the greatness put into it
Out of time is my favourite track off dawn fm. The way that the song transitions to Jim’s quotes. “Soon you’ll be healed, forgiven and refreshed. Free from all trauma, pain, guilt and shame… you may even forget your own name”. Makes me feel that, me too, can be forgiven and freed from the traumatizing stuff I’ve lived as a child. This one hits close to home.
Bro, I lived most of these relationship tracks in the last few months. Me and my gf of 3.5 years broke up, I said I’d work on myself and that was from November to the release in January. Still am everyday but you get the drift. She was my out of time girl, I started messaging this new girl around December as a friend and she started catching feelings. I recently well, got clumsy in a way and she doesn’t talk to me. She was my best friend girl. I’m talking to my ex gf from 8-9th grade currently reconnecting. Don’t know where she’s fit in, but seems kinda poetic that me and her are reconnecting. Life’s a crazy thing.
Update: cause I just got another like. The old flame I had is mature but juvenile in a sense. Still plays silly games like waiting to reply. Moved onto a no strings attached girl. I seem to have strayed from this albums path🤣
It's purgatory, you'll be back
@@sir.bendover3299 no strings attached is cool. Old flame is MIA. My ex is idek I think with someone new, o well
My personal favorite songs on the album has to be “Best Friends” and “Out Of Time”.
Omg SAME!!!
"Out of time" is my favorite too . I do love "Best friends", a very close #2 to "How do I make you love me" (you can't lol)
Holy shit I just found your channel you are soooo underrated, the production quality is insane you deserve at least 20x the fame you have now
I've always loved the weeknd, but now I respect him even more! Wow
I thought dawn fm was really just weeknd further dipping into the beautiful sounds of the 80s and reviving the golden era, it’s even better seeing just how meaningful this is
The thing I always liked about Jim and also Robin Williams was that they were both uniquely funny, but they both also seemed like emotionally reflective/deep people, and that side of them was ignored a bit, even though it was quite blatantly there.
I love Jim Carrey, he is such a multi talented human being. Abel is absolutely incredible too, love him and all of his music. Every track on Dawn FM is my favorite, cannot get enough of it. Thank you for this video, so incredible how 2 amazing forces came together to work on this album. Insane talent from both guys!
To me the whole album is like one big song, the whole thing made me reflect on my bad past a lot, and I know I’ll remember it for the rest of my life
This is an amazing video. Is There Someone Else is my favorite track from Dawn FM.
my top 3 from dawn fm:
1. Less than zero
2.Out of time
3. Is there someone else?
I've been a huge fan of Jim Carrey (James Carrey =) ) ever since in living color. So to hear him featured in my favorite artists album has been really great to me personally.
Fuck me, this channel is gonna blow up like crazy... see ya at the top
ALBUM REVIEW: DAWN FM by THE WEEKND.
Storytelling in music holds an esteemed position of being the sacred craft that introduces the audience to a somber, less glamorous side of the artist that is almost never seen in public. It is so treasured because not only is it a more relatable image for the ones who listen; it is also a strangely pleasant reminder that after and above all else, the artist is also just a human being.
When taking this into account, it dawns upon us that The Weeknd’s craft is not about following trends in terms of making music according to an arbitrary feeling or a lighthearted jibe in the studio. His entire catalogue is him going through a musical metamorphosis that closely chronicles his life, the good and bad decisions he’s made and how far he’s come because of those said decisions, as well as the people he’s been with through it all.
Let’s take for instance: Beauty Behind The Madness. That album represents his ascension to the stratosphere, whereas Starboy is this super cool bad boy persona taking his place as the self-centered light of the universe - he shines alone and he doesn’t want anyone hogging his light. In a sense, it was him getting comfortable in the overwhelming darkness that his stardom propelled him into, and he was simply adapting as a brilliant supernova that splashes colorfully against the impenetrable background of unrelenting blackness.
My Dear Melancholy takes a complete 180 from the bad boy who didn’t care about anything and anyone and who did what he wanted, when he wanted. It is an emotionally anguishing reflection of what he’s lost on his way to the top - mostly the relationships he regretted ending, which set the table for After Hours: the self loathing, complete disregard for self through frightening levels of debauchery and hedonism detailed in this project are his ways of coping with the pain as he tumbles further downwards into a black hole of blinding despair to which he appears to have no escape.
And then, after seeing the light beckoning upon the horizon, he’s not looking back. If there’s anything you should admit about The Weeknd, it’s that he’s owned every phase of his life that he’s lived. From the magnificent to the macabre, his ability to reinvent himself by opening alternate realities within the same dimension is a telling piece of evidence in favor of his multifaceted personality that he pours into every single element of his music, right down to the last note.
DAWN FM, is only but a stage within that musical evolution. As a matter of fact, it symbolizes a graceful rebirth with the purest intentions. By reaching into the treasures of the past with his 80s electro new wave retro disco pop sound, he establishes a futuristic nostalgia of sorts that works as the latex synthesizing the past, present and future quite cohesively. It is a transcendental reality of arcade games and headbands and gym leotards and cassette players and VHS recordings and vinyl records and serene bicycle rides through blissful suburbia at high noon, merged with an ambitious, idealistic future of alien ships and flying cars and jetpacks and advanced time travel that is all so expertly packed into a gentle psychedelic masterpiece which is as healthy for the soul as it is pleasant to the ears.
The album explores themes like emotional vulnerability, love, sincerity, remorse and forgiveness; that at the end of the day, Abel Tesfaye is only but a man, and more so, a hopeless romantic that has set his toxic masculinity aside and therefore finds no shame in being so emotionally exposed. Jim Carrey's patient narration throughout the album defines him as a voice of generous guidance. Some might even say, his role in the album is that of a celestial being leading those who seek his counsel for direction into the light, and that regret over the past is futile because there is a heavenly future awaiting those who relieve themselves of the burdens of the days gone by and are intent on starting as a new being.
Regarding all the religious connotations laden in this album, I’d hardly think that its release on the 7th of January - which just so happens to be Christmas day on the Ethiopian Orthodox Calendar - is a lucky coincidence.
From the engineering, production right through to the mastering, not once does the album deflate in its delivery; Quincy Jones’ poignant little tale does indeed set the heart at ease. Lil Wayne was at his laconic best on “I Heard You’re Married”, and Tyler, The Creator chipped in with some lyrical efficiency of his own. The transition from “Best Friends” into “Is There Someone Else” - which is arguably the best track on the album (with strong competition from “Out Of Time” and “Less Than Zero”, which is my personal favourite)- signals the sonorous climax to what is already poised to be, in my opinion, one of the albums of the year.
It is worth mentioning that there is almost NO MENTION of hedonistic living in his lyrical content throughout the project, and upon pending rumours of The Weeknd’s desire to quit drugs and start a family, this is possibly his way of turning over a new leaf into a brand-new chapter of his life.
RATING: 89%.
I Agree he had To Go Through these Faze in his life .it's Growth and i'm proud of Him and Will Always Be One of His Fans !
Gasoline is such a good song. Definitely my favorite off the entire album. Cannot tell you the number of times I had it cranked to full volume speeding down the road at night with the windows down. He just gets it. I hate that he can relate, but he gets it. Every album just adds to the weight of it all. I've been a fan since the first EPs came out and every time, I wonder how he'll outdo the last. The songs have such a strong tie to certain points in my life and the messaging in Dawn FM appeared when I was fully experiencing the same themes. It's insane how on point it all is. Cannot wait for the next project. He can do no wrong in my eyes.
Carey's sign off hit me like a sack of bricks.
I feel like the seeds for afterlife are sown in dawn fm and you can see it the music videos....Dawn Fm music videos have easter eggs for afterlife
My favorite track is "out of time" it makes me feel like we are actually in the 80s 🥰
I listened to Dawn FM last night at 1am, and this morning I got it on CD. There’s just been something about After Hours and Dawn FM that I’ve loved a lot. And I’m very excited to hear what the final part of this is going to be.
Favorite Track is Less than Zero :)
This whole album is a masterpiece, out of time and don’t break my heart are two I’m really liking right now. But all of them are amazing
For me I like every song from there because look you have to try different taste of music it gave me 80’s vibe
Best friend reminds me of childish Gambino's same drugs, same parallels and both amazing!
Man, what an amazingly deep interpretation of such an amazing album...Abel and Jim are kindred spirits, their lives run parallel with one another, which in turn created a very strong bond of friendship. The two coming together to create such an amazing work of art is probably the best thing I've ever experienced musically and spiritually.
My bf sent this to me, and I’m thankful for that. This definitely brought me back to my XO fam theory days. Great ideas and great video. Keep doing what you’re doing.
Super slept on channel man, can’t wait till you get the credit you deserve
the visuals are beautifully arranged
I think Jim's phantom regret part , just shows how amazing words can be when written beautifully, for me the album is so great and took me back to the 80's ,but jim stole the show ....
it must be so depressing listening to old the weeknd songs thinking that hes just sex music
I love Dawn FM the whole album lol never resonated with any album as much as Dawn FM
My favorite song is less than zero as it just oddly enough comforts me so much with every beat of the song, but it also makes me realize the state of the world and how corrupt it really is. Truly amazing how many emotions are in that track
Really love less then zero. #2 would definitely be take my breath. And #3 is a toss up between how do I make you love me & out of time. IMO the whole album is beautiful 80s magic!
Some of my favorite albums are how ambiguous they make everything seem but actually tell a very detail depiction of how they are feeling or what happened. But to many viewers your able to comprehend those emotions and place them into your own life making them so meaningful to you and how you connect to the artist even though you have vastly different lives, and the weekend is quite literally doing that in DAWN with Jim Carey layers omg. Abel you’ve become such a master story tellerz
I think this probably gonna be the best trilogy in Music history its very deep and personal to Abel but i feel like alot of people also with Dawn FM. Honestly its a great time to be a Weeknd Fan lol
Thank you so much. I had similar opinion about the album and how it sounds like some purgatory scene. Jim carry’s track at the end still gives me tears every time I hear it.
*”because.. Canada” 🍁 🇨🇦 - MELL DUNEY 616*
Jesus Christ you’re a genuis
I love all the songs from this album in particular
Is it not a Bruce Almighty reference?
I love the album and I think it is an amazing piece of art. On the flip side though, I can only listen to a couple of the songs because listening to the contents of the album all together almost gave me a panic attack.
Criminally underrated channel
Lovely write up man. Love Jim.
I love your channel and what you do so so much.
Jim is such an artist ,and such beautiful writing ❤❤❤
i don't know why but best friends spoke to me
I've loved Weeknd since the very first song I heard, but Dawn FM is the first Album of his I listened through and I absolutely love it. Watching this video makes me want to listen through all of After Hours and that's the soundtrack of the day!
Less than Zero/gasoline.
PLOT TWIST: This album is about his traumatic heartbreak with Ariana Grande! He drops hits in a hand full of songs including "Out of Time", "Best Friends" and "I Heard Your Married"! Give the album another listen and you'll never hear it the same way again.
Since the first time, I just felt that The weeknd tried to send us a message about his feelings of being a person who's surrounded by microphones and a bunch of cameras, (also being a famous person is not that easy) and you know, sometimes have it all is not that satisfying and that's what he means, because he's talking about the huge emptiness and how does the high society ppl makes him a character and not let him be himself, it is just like he's bsclly living behind a mask he cant quit when he's entertaining ppl, or just like he's an eslave of his traumas.
This Trilogy really reminds me of The Divine Comedy. If After Hours is Inferno, and Dawn FM is Purgatory, then his next album will be about Paradise
Gasoline really felt like an awakening to me it has a very unique sound
Jim Carey was on with Abel, because Arriana first crush was Jim Carey. And Abel does everything for Arriana. ❤️ 👀.
Awesome video man. Dawn FM is not a hard album to understand but appreciate your analysis. Haven't stopped listening to that masterpiece
Wow. I have no words. Great content. Great analysis. You definitely have a new subscriber. XOXOXOXO
Its probable someone has said this, but maybe the new trilogy is a nod to dante's divine comedy trilogy of hell (after hours), purgatory (dawn fm), and paradise (some future album that better sound damn happy)
So far listen to Sacrifice which is interesting what sacrifice means for him. Also Interesting he feels that way about his love life and Jim Carry but they both had lots of women love lives. Sadly many of us grew with one household parent and experience same or worst situations but looking their careers it seems was their own struggles in them conflicting with their expectations with what others react toward them and how this affect them. I use to feel the Weeknd kid was trustworthy but saw his unraveling and realized no is just one more going thru "let me be famous ambitions" the lyrics tells his experience or whoever he sings for. So far they are not alone in this struggle of not getting what they want or hope for. Maybe next production he has other outlook about his life, maybe.
How do I make you love me? I have the masking problem and people pleasing... 😅😬
This needa blow up
Sacrifice is my favorite
I wonder if there's anything Biblical in the album. It sounds like Biblical references might be there, but shrouded in eastern mysticism.
Ngl hearing the goofy, lovable Jim talk about the regrets we carry to our grave fucking BROKE me
I love Jim Carey he's been there for me from childhood to adulthood. He's one of those guys that I would actually look at and give a big hug with tears in my eyes. He's one of a kind
Are u making all this up or what? Was the album really inspired by Jim's story or something? Did Abel even say this?
favorite one must be gasoline, such a great way to start the album and the dark lyrics and beat is so good, sacrifice i cant either get enough from
I actually don't think tht dawn fm is his purgatory but I have a hypothesis tht it is The Weeknds life flashing before his eyes as he goes thru his entire life and his mistakes to reflect upon. This wud explain y he sings about his old life in such detail, he's looking back at the life he had and phantom regret is his final embrace with the God figure to reach his afterlife.. jes my thoughts and head canom
Life flashing before your eyes is believed to be purgatory in some cultures. It is transitional space, not quite alive, not quite dead. Your head canon isn’t much different from this purgatory to be fair.
@@nrgao oo I thought with purgatory he meant tht he was In the gateway to heaven. Sry fr the misunderstanding
