I heard Pogorelich play Gaspard de la Nuit at the Sydney Opera House in
    the early 1980s.
That night, he revealed an Aladdin's Cave of such musical wonders to the
audience, that no one left the Concert Hall as they had first arrived.
Following the death of his wife, a certain "distortion" set in to see his playing
change, that he suffered even further through the criticisms of detractors who
    as always, knew no better.
The two performances that I attended may well be the greatest experiences
    of my musical life.
Take him or leave him, one thing you can never do, is forget him. He is, as
was the dancer Rudolf Nureyev, an artist of the highest order, who sprays
    his work with his blood.

@veritas curat Ondine is about a sea nymph creature, who tries to seduce a man but fails ultimately. Scarbo is about a devil goblin, tiny but mischievous creature. Pogorelic had a rather short prime, during which his playing was unique and unequaled. I believe he was already deteriorating before the death of his wife. I heard him in the early 90s and the spark was replaced by eccentricity

Why is he playing the introduction incorrectly? Weird rhythms, and wrong notes?

    • @johnvenable199
      @johnvenable199 2 месяца назад +1

You are wrong. He's playing the original published version before he told apulnuter to keep the same right hand pattern as the beginning. And the phrasing and rythmic idiosincrancies are just right. He plays it like its speech. Like a shy and pretty little girl would sing to seduce a man. Its perfect! Listen again. And listen to the Japan performance of the same year. You'll see what I mean by this.

He plays Ravel as you'd play Liszt...
I prefer from far the rendition of Martha Argerich who has much better understood the spirit and finesse of Ravel

Gaspard needs more sophistication. His tempo is so fast and dynamics is loud. For me
Yuja Wang plays Gaspard more with light and shade.

Hi Filip! I agree with you, and I do think that Pogorelich's "Scarbo" is extraordinary, one of the best performances of this piece. His pacing is just right, the mood is right, for after all let's not forget what "Scarbo" is... (one needs to read the poem). There is however one thing where you are wrong: Ravel died in 1937, and Pogorelich was born in 1958... so Ravel could not have said anything to Pogorelich, as they never met. Best wishes!
