  • www.MixMyMusic.net - Curious how they did it? Butch Vig deconstructs Nirvana's song "In Bloom". Awesome video of him behind the console in the studio soloing out sections of the song and talking about how they made the record. Tip of the hat to "Classic Albums".

    Nevermind was recorded onto 2" tape. Not Pro Tools.
    In 1991, Pro Tools was in it's 1.0 version and had only 4 tracks and cost $6000.00. Few people were using it yet.
    Butch took each track stem from the tapes and dumped them into ProTools for this documentary. Troll on.

It was for sure recorded on tape but for how accurate the vocals are I am sure they did editing (And there was one song... I think it was drain you... Where you can actually hear the tone of the vocals change just slightly... Like it wasn't the original. Or if they did use the editing block and cut and taped it then the guy who did it has a pretty steady hand...)

    The "polish" on this entire album helped it form that mythical bridge from punk (my music at the time) to heavy metal (which I said I hated but secretly loved). Here was an honest and heavy sound that had massive hooks, a plain fashion aesthetic, and was just great songwriting. I was stunned when I heard this album at 21 years of age. When I heard "Teen Spirit" on KROQ in Los Angeles, I thought, "This isn't Rodney on the Roq late at night. Why are they playing this stuff?"

    Id love to know what Kurt and Krist thought when they heard/discovered Dave had such a great voice. That's a proper high harmony that Kurt probably couldn't get near. Surprised Dave's voice want utilised more. Especially on the records. Pat smear did a good job live to be fair. But harder to do harmonies while banging the drums as opposed to playing guitar. And we all know how good a singer Dave is now. Mad isn't it.

    In Bloom can be defined as one of their most defining songs. Heavy and plush at the same time with Kurts penchant for using biological references to tell his story.

      I know people say Lithium is the quintessential Nirvana song, but really to me at least it In Bloom. It's heavy, catchy, goes through every dynamic they use in their music, and Kurt's best solo.

    Wow, so much respect for Kurt singing each and every vocal on Nevermind twice with such perfection and quality...And hats off to Butch, otherwise the record would've sounded like another Fecal Matter tape...

    • @RebelThoughts82

      RebelThoughts82 I was just slighting at what it could've sounded like, regardless if it were recorded in a studio or not. I guess if you want a better example, I would say "Bleach". Just listen to the "In Bloom" alternative version to get a better idea. Although the drummers were different, Butch did play a significant role to make Nirvana more pop-friendly and refined to reach a wider audience.

    Many say Nevermind was overproduced. Bullshit. Vig captured both their tunefulness and aggression. Cobain complained it didn’t sound punk enough. Well you can’t have it all.

    • @Heatfarmer
      @Heatfarmer 5 лет назад

      I think you can, this is how a punk band should sound in 1991. I thought it was Scream, when I first heard and saw them on video. The drumming was so similar to them due to Dave Grohl.

    • @dcrea9416
      @dcrea9416 4 года назад +2

      I never really viewed it as punk album, but that's okay. The punk attitude is still there in places. I think Butch is probably the only person that could have captured their sound the way he did at the time. The band didn't really sound this way live, but that was another cool thing altogether. You knew seeing them live wasn't going to be like pressing play on the CD.

    • @RockandrollNegro
      @RockandrollNegro 3 года назад

      Kurt didn't know what he wanted. He wanted a pure punk album, but then when In Utero was recorded, he sends it over to Scott Litt to remix some songs to make them more pop. I do think that Nevermind was indeed too polished in certain spots, but it's the album that put them over the top, so who am I to argue.

    • @alexevans5043
      @alexevans5043 3 года назад

      I think a lot of the songs on nevermind are just more pop than something like in utero. Even the hits on IU aren’t pop.

    As for the voice doubling technique, it makes a lot of sense... two voices are always stronger than one, and it gives a great power.
    And it's awesome to know Kurt was such a big fan of Lennon. R.I.P., the both of them.
