  • Flite Test - Air Foils - PROJECT
    In this episode of Flite Test Josh and Josh teach us how to build planes out of foil? Well maybe not, but they do explain airfoils pretty well. Watch this to learn more.

    There is an old saying in aviation: "Put enough power on anything and I can make it fly." The real secret in aircraft design is to get the most speed/load with the minimum of power. I encourage everyone in the hobby to study the theory of flight and aerodynamics. There are many RUclips videos and even library books about it.

      For me looking at illustrations of airflow around wings and other objects really helped me getting a feeling of what a wing is going to do in different airspeeds

    • @AlexJoneses
      @AlexJoneses 7 лет назад

      Robert Evans thank you for those encouraging words! My grandpa got me into this hint and he's been flying since before even one channels came out. He's an expert in the science of this stuff and is teaching me! I hope everyone else learns about the science about this too, it really helps!

      agree, they should do a spaghetti/marshmallow competion but for flying thing that flies with a payload from point A to point B using all the same raw building materials (same battery, same motor etc... but different aerodynamic designs).

    flitetest , can you please make a episode on how to design a wing for a glider or simple aeroplane .like the video should tell the step in determining the selection of airfoil , Coefficient of lift, wing span , chord length for a given weight of aeroplane .

      Tim Hyatt they should do a duct tape plane challenge.

    • @timhyatt9185
      @timhyatt9185 5 лет назад +2

      not really much of a challenge... duct tape was created as an expediant battledamage repair means during the era of fabric wings...when the metal skinned birds started being developed in WWII, they developed better adhesives. it's why you'll sometimes hear it called 100 mph tape...cuz it'll stick on a plane flying that fast...

      Tim Hyatt huh. Didn’t know that! You learn something new everyday!

  • @pagani8

    Its actually really easy to add dihedral to any wing without hindering its structural integrity, all you have to do is hold it over the stove for a second why applying light pressure it the way that you want the dihedral and once it cools its just as strong as when you started, but with dehedral! I didn't come up with this, give Daniel of RCTF the credit for this idea! Anyway, hope this is helpful to someone and great video!

    Hey flite test love the videos! But after I have personally done some fairly extensive testing in a wind tunnel using a 3dimensional force analyzer I can absolutely tell you that in the scale we use, a "kf" airfoil is just as inefficient as a flat wing. I tested 8 different styles of foils and a sanded blue foam foil worked e best ,

    hi guys, ive been watching your videos for the last couple month, you guys great, im a noob in this hobby,.and probably thousands of people like me out there that start cheap, making scratch build and end up crash, i think it would be great if you guys make a video about scratch build, what do's and dont's..what props match to what setup..finding CG etc...you know what i mean...keep up the good work..cheers

  • @jonasmajewski
    @jonasmajewski 12 лет назад +1

    @monboy10:
    I'm glad they didn't because the equal-transit-time thing to explain lift is completely incorrect, just think about undercambered and symmetrical airfoils and inverted flight. Angle of attack is all you need, the air gets deflected downwards and generates lift as a counterforce.

  • @sparrowlt
    @sparrowlt 11 лет назад

    I did a scratch plane , made a KF2 airfoil, put the CG where the geometry of the wing dictated and it flies fine.. used 40% of the chord for the step and 7% higher

    KF airfoils are more of a build technique to replicate yhe other airfoils.
    Flatbottom=KF2
    Symetrical=KF4
    Undercamber/flat=KF3

  • @amanieux
    @amanieux 7 лет назад

    when you change airfoil, do you see a significant difference in flight time with the same battery fully charged ?. you should make a competition for RC flying things that flies the same payload from point A to point B (everybody using the same battery+same electric motor+same propellar+same RC electroncis+same payload in the form of a good camera that delivers you good images for your video of the event, same amount of building material (balsa or foamboard). it would be fun and super interesting from a aerodynamics innovation perpective people being free to choose their design within these constraints and not necessarily in the shape of a airplane. ( something like the marshmallow/spaghetti competition the winner being the one with the most remaining battery charge after reaching point B).

    Well, quite a lot of full size airplanes have an undercambered wing, especially those who need lots of lift at low speeds. Read the wikipedia article on aerodynamic lift if you like. I'm a full size pilot and I'm happy to know that I'm flying not because of pressure differences but of newton's law about active and counterforce.

    for an aerobatic plane, especially something delta wing like an F16, if there any difference between a flat airfoil and symmetrical one? it seems they both rely entirely on AOA for lift, so why bother with the curved symmetrical profile like you get on a real extra 300/edge 540 kind of plane?

  • @gautamkrishna7421
    @gautamkrishna7421 5 лет назад +1

    How does a symmetrical airfoil create lift? If the air takes the same time to get across on both sides, then the air pressure on both sides of the wing is equal. The Bernoulli effect works on the basis that the pressures are not equal. someone explain pls?

    • @destruction7367
      @destruction7367 5 лет назад +1

      Well I'm 13 so don't expect a scientific answer, but from what I've learnt, the symmetrical airfoil produces no lift although that's what the elevator is for, I'm sure if you are flying an aerobatics plane, you don't want it to go up or down without you touching the elevator. Because if you are going for a stunt, you don't want it to move out of the barrel roll. (Pardon my punctuation.)

    • @gautamkrishna7421
      @gautamkrishna7421 5 лет назад

      Yeah I remember stunt planes have symmetrical and so do fighter jets. I just didn’t get the point of that against just a flat wing... oh well. I’m 14 by the way haha
