I literally started swimming because of this race. Nathan Adrian is my boy and I love watching him. Just came here to relive the magic after watching him do the 100m free at Arena Pro @ Mesa and he killed it with first again. Swimming competitively in college now because of him. He's such an inspiration and the nicest guy. THAT SMILE!
This race really shows how important toughness and desire are at the end of a race. As the announcer said, Magnussenn looked like he had it won at about 80 meters. He had taken the lead and was known as a back-half swimmer. He even still had a noticeable, albeit very small, lead at about 90 meters, but Adrian just puts his head down like a madman the last 10 to 15 meters, while Magnussen breathes once or twice. That really was the difference. Magnussen had him beat but Adrian either wanted it more, was tougher, or both.
Two breathes is not the difference. It shows how little you know about swimming. The PROBLEM was he was looking up to the wall the last 5 meters and stopped kicking. THAT was what lost him the race.
Olympic gold medal finals and Hayden looks so relaxed before, adjusting the drawstring on his suit and casually putting on his goggles just seconds before the whistle to get on the blocks...that's one cool dude.
"I realized at that moment that my new pair of goggles had flipped straps so I was trying to see if I could fix it because I knew there was a chance they could slip down my face." - That's what Brent told me when I asked him about it. Pretty chill dude. Man, I hope you get this message update.
The bald head releases more heat into the water decreasing its density and lowering resistance thus giving the bald swimmer the advantage. However it also attracts more jellyfish.
Canadian here. remember watching Brent Hayden not receive a medal in a few other events and was out of my seat the entire race. I am not a swimmer nor do I care much about it other than the Olympics. I love how they bring a country together to root for their fellow citizens
"The americans have not won this event since 1988" (1:41) and suddenly comes Nathan and boom..he beats "the missile" by one hundred of a sec!!!! yep...that's Nathan G.Adrian..:D #proud
shoulder driven, yes absolutely amazing. look at that turn over speed, look at that powerful stroke finger tip right down to the bottom as it hits. I wouldn't argue that he is probably one of the best shoulder driven freestyler in the world.
Top 10 fastest men in 100 free in textile: #1: James Magnussen (AUS) 47.10 #2: Nathan Adrian (USA) 47.52 #3: Vladimir Morozov (RUS) 47.62 #4: James Roberts (AUS) 47.63 #5: Cameron Mcevoy (AUS) 47.65 #6: Brent Hayden (CAN) 47.80 #7: Jimmy Feigen (USA) 47.82 #8: Pieter Van Den Hoogenband (NED), Cesar Cielo (BRA), and Yannick Agnel (FRA) 47.84
Looks like that straight arm drive by Adrian at the end helps....also looks like Magnus eased off on his legs at the every end while adrian kept the propellers going.....
I know this is 3 years late but it’s actually a decent freestyle swimming technique. Florent Manaudou from France got the 50m freestyle world record using it.
+Luce Xia : I think it was just an unlucky moment for Maggie. As you can be seen, he swims 100free with stroking technique of 200 free, and never uses straight arm technique. He, however, won many time, and even set his PB (47.1) being 0.42s faster than Adrian's
It is really incredible for the Australians. They didnt win the 100 freestyle with Thorpe (one of the greatest freestylers of all time), Magnussen (twice world champion) and others. And in 2016 an 18 year old boy came in beating McEvoy, the aussies favourite, and Nathan Adrian the former olympic champion. Incredible
Magnussen basically lost the race in the last 5 meters because that is when he: 1. Raised his head up to look for the wall but increased body resistance by doing so. 2. Pretty much stopped kicking. If he did only one of those things he would have still won. But he made two mistakes and it cost him gold.
It wasn't even the first time in London that Maggie lost to Adrian. They both swam the first leg in the 4x100m freestyle and Adrian beat him there also. It should have been a wake up call for Maggie who should have studied the replay religiously in the days between races. Adrian would go on to swim a faster leg in the final 4x100 medley relay event also. And beat him again in World Champs a year later. Basically, Maggie is a choker.
I’m a swimmer and I don’t know how they do it but when they get out of the water they always look dry but when I get out of the water it becomes a title wave from all the water dripping off of me lmao
Do you know Stephan Nystrand? He used to hold the world record in few sprint freestyles and he did a two beat kick too. He kicked less but he put more strength in each kicks and actually swam with a butterfly-like rhythm. That stroke will blow your mind if you have the chance to see any underwater shots.
One of the best things about sports is you never know who is going to be on or show up out of no where and win. Its like any other final in any other sport. It doesn't matter what happens with any previous race or game it only matters how you do that day.
Callum Wootton u crazy? i am a swimmer myself and yes they can hurt after having them on for a while. Thats why u only have them bent down during the race. Having them bent up during a race can slow u down. So u really think a pro swimmer that is going to swim a olympic final chose to have the edges bent down cause it hurts a little bit?
Yeah, they are sensor. I believe Adrian is taller than Magnussen as such has a longer arm span which he uses well. He always seems to finish strong. I think he won it fair. ;)

3 types of freestyle by Adrian in one race. One of the most inspiring races I can remember.
What are the three types? I'm confused as Magnussen reading a book about humility.

Nobody talking about Hayden from Canada absolutely flying to a bronze in lane 7??? Must be the no cap approach he took
3:53 the guy from cuba looks like hes just floundering... the fact that he can go 48 with a two beat kick is mind blowing
The bald guy doesn't need a swim cap.

@@glaciarsoylent4859... There's a lot of hope. From what I've read, it was diagnosed at an early stage. He was back training soon after an operation!
