I ran into the same issue when grinding apples in a blender for my cider last year. What I found is if you add a small amount of juice back into the blender, you can grind whole or half apples no problem as long as there's liquid in with the apple pieces.
I was able to pop quartered apples into my food processor and then squeezed that pulp through a fine flat bottom sieve with the removable base of a cake tin. Apple pulp was dry and I got a great amount of apple juice.
Really interested to see how this turns out! I made a hard cider using store bought juice the other day with Hornindal and a Mosaic/Calypso dry hop and it quickly has become one of my favorite ways to drink cider.
Your channel is great. After three beer kits (muntons) I will brew my first all grain beer next week, I already received all equipment I'm just waiting the delivery for malt, hops and yeast. Your video gave me a lot of useful advices, thanks. I got a question : could you make a video about water treatment ? It's kind of obscure for me right now. Also a suggestion for your cider : if you want to add something in it you could try cannelle, it works really good on apple based dessert like tarte tatin or crumble.
Sorry for a delayed response - I don't know how I missed this. Stoked you like the channel and that its helping you dive into home brewing! I'd like to make a video on water treatment but in the meantime check out this great one from theapartmentbrewer: ruclips.net/video/MP2IRulwL3I/видео.html
I always give a little “pffft” of CO2 to the top of my bottles once I pull the gun out to “purge” the wee head space left up there. Obvs I’m a little O2 paranoid.
How do you keep hops from clogging your faucet (tap?) when doing the whirlpool in the anvil? Was brewing a hazy a couple weeks back on my anvil and the hops clogged the faucet. Was doing a whirlpool while dumping the hops in.
This was the first time I haven’t used a hop basket/filter. I probably won’t do it again but I was just super stoked about the whirlpool arm. Did they clog the valve or the pump?
@@HopsANDgnarly Valve, hops never made it to the pump. I'll probably stick with my hop spider in the future. I haven't tested to see if spiders reduce hop efficiency in my system. Thanks!
Hey man! So random question that doesn’t pertain to your recipe: just bought the Anvil 10.5 gallon foundry brew system. I have that hop spider you have (I think the small one from Amazon that should be 4x10)...will it work with the 10.5 gallon system?? Or should I upgrade to the large hop spider (5.9x13.78)??
I don't have a 10.5 but as long as it suspends past the wort it should work. When I use my Mash and Boil I usually suspend it even further with a little bit of twine hanging from the handle. You can see this setup in my Sour Porter video at about 5:00. Cheers man 🍻
I was actually thinking about throwing hops in my cider too but not sure how it will work out. I think I would have to keep it down very little because I dont want to drown out the flavor of the cider. Did u try it yet?
Not this one but I’ve done this with previous batches. A dry hop before packaging really brings it together. There are plenty of commercial examples out there to try as well!
I think it really depends on the hops and how much you like them. I always use and oz in primary and then dry hop in my keg with another oz. I really like hops though. A way to bring back a lot of the apple character is to add back in some frozen apple juice concentrate (don't do this if you're bottle conditioning)
Because of cyanide poisoning? I just quickly looked into it and found you'd have to eat upwards of 500 apple seeds in a sitting to develop acute cyanide poisoning. Still kinda crazy!
@@vernontafte1718 the press extracted the juice and left the pulp behind. I made it this same way last year but I can’t make any recommendations to you either way. It wouldn’t be very hard to core the apples if you’d like
@@HopsANDgnarly do you use it often with the Anvil Foundry? I am thinking of purchasing one, however, I would like to still be able to whirlpool like I do with my current 3 vessel set up.
This was my first go with it. One thing I’d recommend is getting the longer one. I got the 12” I believe and it works with my 6.5 gallons foundry but I don’t think it’s going to work with anything larger, like my mash and boil. Plus it doesn’t hurt if it’s sticking up above the rim of the kettle

Ohio FTW!
Love the Wolves Ridge shirt. Cosmo Canyon slaps if you ever get a chance to try it!
Hopped ciders are SO good, definitely on my list to brew one up myself but this one sounds good!
So you tried one?
Awesome video, as always. Noticed your westbound and down sticker, that was my favorite stop on our recent visit to Denver.
Thank you! That place is awesome and they just opened a second location in my neighborhood. Love it!

Sounds great! I’m stoked to see how this one turns out - it’ll definitely be in a Gear & a Beer 🍻
I didn’t know you were in Colorado! Let’s have a brew day
That’d be fun someday!
Hell yeah throw in something funky!
I look forward to your vidz.
Clicked "like" as soon as the vid started, because every one has been an absolute b a n g e r.

Where can one buy a hops and gnarly glass?
If not what style of glass is it? They look great for any beer style
