As someone who had literally never done any sawing in my life, thank you, this is very helpful and clear, I can't wait to dawn my dramatic DM cloak in front of my players :) ~ Aesthetics ~ for days
I used this a year ago to make my wedding cloak and just recently found you again. Just wanted to say thanks for the tutorial and pattern! It made for a really special an nerdy day for me and my wife!
Just used this tutorial last night for my Renaissance Faire cloak. I've never used a french seam or sewn clothing for myself. The cloak came together in just a few hours and looks amazing! So flowy and mysterious feeling. Thank you so much for this concise and easy to follow tutorial! (Really glad I didn't buy that $8 pattern from the box stores!)
I followed your tutorial. I had a 1,50m x 1,50m peace for my 1,20m daughter. I took 1/4 of a cercles from two opposite corners and it worked marvellously 🥰 I had an additional suture to make in the middle of the back, and I handmade (without machine) in one afternoon. It was so easy and turned out so chic I can’t believe it and for 8€ the fabric. I’ll make myself the same for the festival in Provin. Thank you 💖💖
Thaaaaaaaaank you for this! I have 4.3 meters of a fabric I want to use as a lining but a girl I work with wants some of it for her daughter. Other tutorials said I needed 5 meters to make a cloak so this is most excellent. Phew. Thank you
This turned out really awesome! I was looking for a cloak design that I could make out of wool blankets for bushcraft, hunting, survival, and general use. This is my favorite design!
This is awesome, thank you! As an amateur with fabric and sewing this was super detailed and easy to follow. I used this for my Sylvie (Lady Loki) cosplay, used green instead of blue. Thanks again!
I just finished mine! I used a furniture blanket so it was pretty thick, and I added a point to the hood and the point was pretty stiff, so if you're gonna do a point on yours make sure it's not super thick, but regardless it still turned out really good!
Gosh thanks! And to alter to a child's size, just make the measurements smaller. Neck hole could be about the same, but the lenght/circle radius just needs to be smaller, and same with hood
I have a (not homemade) cloak that was probably meant to be full length for an eight year old, and is instead waist length on me; I absolutely love it. I suggest that those who are making cloaks for children intentionally make the hood with enough room for an adult head to fit (since you'll likely want it to flare dramatically on the child's head anyway, there's room to work with here), attach it to a full size neckline, and add a band of fabric to create a drawstring channel. Thread a ribbon through, sew it to one end of the channel, pull the other end until the neckline is gathered to an appropriate size for the child, sew in place on that side too. You can leave excess ribbon on each end for ties, or cut off the ribbon and add a different closure method. Then, the neckline can be re-expanded later and the cloak winds up not being outgrown but instead simply becoming a shorter cloak with less dramatic hood. (Another option if you're using ribbon ties: instead of sewing the ribbon directly to the ends of the drawstring channel, sew a button just inside each end of the channel, and put buttonholes at various places along the ribbon. That way there's no need to rip out thread later. Of course, only do this if the child can be trusted to not undo the buttons willy-nilly and cause the ribbon to be drawn into the channel or even slide out entirely. Rethreading the ribbon would be just as annoying as ripping out the thread...)
Thank you Annie! I bought my polyester fleece fabric from a queen/king size duvet cover (soft and a little fluffy on one side). Going to use it to keep warm in cold times, and to go with my Witcher cosplay! (Grey colour). Going to make it smell super nice, too 🐺✨
Ah no my fabric starts off at about 90" square- so I'll watch your tutorial for guidance and think creatively.. Tomorrow. I'm also 6ft tall so this will be an interesting challenge.. Any ideas/tips welcome!
Thank you so much for this tutorial, this saved me a lot of time. I'm going to wear this as Red-Riding-Hood on a day we call "Fasching/Karneval" in Austria. (It's similar to Halloween, but not spooky.) :)
This is the best sewing tutorial I’ve ever watched! Your explanations are to the point and descriptive and concise enough for me to understand what you’re saying the first time around, instead of me usually pausing and playing and rewinding to finally understand it. Thank you!!!!!!!
Wow thank you for such a compliment. I struggle with tutorials sometimes too so I am glad my efforts to make this easy to understand paid off! You are very welcome!
Super helpful! Thank you! I’ve never sewn before, so this was quite a project for me. But I’m going to a Ren Faire in a week and wanted my costume to pop, I figured a cloak would be perfect for that “Mysterious Cloaked Figure” NPC look. I followed your instructions minus a few of the finer finishing things like ironing and did everything by hand, but it turned out great! So happy with my costume:) thank you so much for your simple explanations that even a beginner can do!
Thank you for this well explained tutorial! :) I am going to do this for a Halloweencostume and am so excited to follow your tutorial instead of just buying a cloak
Спасибо от русского зрителя, я искала видеоурок для того чтобы сшить костюм на Хэллоуин и ваш показался мне самым понятным, хоть я и не понимаю по англиски. Thanks, you very nice :3 Haha, I really very bad speak in English.
thank you so. much. i am young, and im hoping to make this for a renn faire. this looks simple and relatively lightweight, not too unbearable for spending all day outside during summer in texas. gotta try and keep cool, so ill probably go with a satiny fabric like youre using here. maybe ill even try and make the hood more rigid so it keeps its shape when its up. :)
I made this cloak for myself last year. So easy and your explanations are great. I'm considering scaling down to make a cape for a doll. Have you ever used this technique for a very small cloak?
This was a super helpful tutorial. I am making a Harry Potter robe for my son's Halloween costume. The robe was okay, but I did not get how to do a hood or encase the seam so it would not show. You explained it really well. Thank you!
It's just how my camera films 😂 I sometimes flip everything but there were a LOT of clips for this video so it would have been quite the task to mirror them back
That was great. I have students Middle School Sewing Students who want to make fleece Cloaks for Track Meet Days in the Mountains. They are SO excited about it! Thank you!
Most fabric stores carry fabric that is 60" wide. 54"-60" is typically the average. Just keep in mind most fabric stores fold fabric in half when they put it on bolts.
Bought some wool fabric im sooo excited. Still kinda debating between this and a pattern but I can’t wait for mh fabric to come in. Also how would I do a lining? I’m debating that aswell
For lining the whole thing, you can skip the french seams and make regular flat seams instead. And the lining should be the same exact shapes. Sew both together as normal, skip the hems. Instead put good sides of fabric together and sew all around, leaving a hole. Pull inside out, and close the hole, press. And it's a lined cloak
thank you for this tutorial !! just out of curiousity, why did you use french seams ? is it necessary to use one or does it just provide a better finish ? because if I'm honest I had a hard time understanding how they work and I'd love to take on this project!
Your welcome! I use french seams because they are a simple finish to the seam. If seams are left raw and flat without a finish of any kind they fray. Lots of people will finish seams by serging the edges, or use pinking shears, ect so they can do one normal flat seam. But I wanted this tutorial to be doable without fraying for anyone, including those without the tools for the serging or pinking. If you want to try other seam finishes, a felled seam is also a very good idea. And if fraying doesn't bother you then a normal flat seam without any finishes is an option!
Thank you for this tutorial! I’m having a slight problem with my cloak however and I was wondering if you knew the solution! The cloak itself is made out of this ribbon material, it’s stretchy but it has some weight to it, when I tried wearing the cloak, the bottom part didn’t reach the floor because the fabric was collecting in the middle and it almost looks like a droopy bag 😅 I have some ideas to fix this but I would like to hear what you would do before I try anything- Thanks! :)
I wish I could help more but I can't really tell what the issue is from your description. Collecting in the middle - did you line the garment or was it caught on something? Or was it the way the fabric itself was behaving?
@@AnnieChieDesigns I have not lined it yet and I believe it’s how the fabric is behaving, the fabric is solid white rib knit if that helps, and instead of the fabric touching all the way to the floor, it almost folds in on itself and gets stuck near my lower back. I’m not sure if I didn’t something wrong but the fabric curls instead of going straight down 😥 I have a feeling that it has to be something with the material itself and if that’s the case I might have to line it with something that is more stiff or cut the cape and sow it back in a way that it keeps it’s shape better- hope this helps a little better!
I'm very much a novice (with a skilled wife), and managed to make this all by myself, thank you. Do you have any tips for helping the drape of the hood? It sort of just flops around at the top.
Hi Annie, I'm going to give this a try. I would like to line the hood only, do you have a tutorial for that, or tips you can recommend? I'm a beginner! THX
I have the same cloak. And my question is, will it be okay to walk down the street in it? Ie, use it not only for cosplay, for example. I think people will look askance at me...
The fabric I used is called sudeine- a fake seude. And to figure that out you would need to measure from the nape of your neck to the floor. I can't do the math off the top of my head as even a 5'4" person can have this measurement vary
Damn done like a pro! 🤔you thk it wouldn’t be too much trouble too put little cuffed sleeveletts in? (Something that wouldn’t leave noticeable holes when you’re not using.)
Wrong side refers to the side you want on the inside of the garment yes! On my fabric I wanted the suede look on the outside, making it the "right side" in this case
You can just leave it as is! It would be a tad longer on you (I am 5'7") but it would reach farther down your calves, this is not a floor lenght pattern.
@@AnnieChieDesigns Sweet, that means it will be like a perfect height for what I want. Making a modified red riding hood costume and I prefer longer cloaks. (I'm 5'4")
We made 2 capes using a similar design but the hood is a bit heavy and the tie off at the neckline slides up to the throat. Not very comfortable for long wear time. Any ideas for keeping them in place?
I watched your video on your winter cloak and I live somewhere where it rains a lot 9n the winter and I was wondering if there was a way to make them water/wind proof?
At 9:01, do you mean that we have to hem just the bottom? I'm confused, there's just so much hemming lol. Also do you know where I can buy white faux suede 50in×100in??
If I were to buy more fabric, like 6 meters, would it still work out? would it only be longer in the end? Or would the neck line be affected? Because I have to make a very long cape for a project...
As someone who had literally never done any sawing in my life, thank you, this is very helpful and clear, I can't wait to dawn my dramatic DM cloak in front of my players :)

How do i cut it so i don't have a gap in the front. He wants the option to connect the front all way down
Can this be done by hand and with tulle couse im thinking of making one that pairs with my prom dress
It absolutely can! Totally possible!
No pockets for pens, paper, dice, and miniatures?
Those can definitely be added in quite easily!
Any tips on how to add a lining to this?
ok but… whats the width of my fabric?!?! how do i figure thatout!
Question when cutting the bottom, how do you not get it curved so even not with a dip on the sides?
At 9:01, do you mean that we have to hem just the bottom? I'm confused, there's just so much hemming lol. Also do you know where I can buy white faux suede 50in×100in??
I have a problem with the sizing, can you help me? My height is 153
What type of fabric and where did your purchase?
Does this work for giants? Aka I’m 6ft and bulky
If I were to buy more fabric, like 6 meters, would it still work out? would it only be longer in the end? Or would the neck line be affected? Because I have to make a very long cape for a project...
