Great for cosplay, D&D Games and any other adventures you may be going on.
This cloak pattern is designed in a way that you do not over buy fabric and where almost all the fabric gets used. There are very few scraps.

As someone who had literally never done any sawing in my life, thank you, this is very helpful and clear, I can't wait to dawn my dramatic DM cloak in front of my players :)
~ Aesthetics ~ for days
Aw I'm glad!! Have fun with the aesthetic dramatic games at your table ;)
Just used this tutorial last night for my Renaissance Faire cloak. I've never used a french seam or sewn clothing for myself. The cloak came together in just a few hours and looks amazing! So flowy and mysterious feeling. Thank you so much for this concise and easy to follow tutorial! (Really glad I didn't buy that $8 pattern from the box stores!)
I'm so glad to hear this! Glad this tutorial was helpful
@@AnnieChieDesigns So excited to bust it out tomorrow!
This is probably my favorite tutorial on a cloak i've seen. Any advice on altering this for child size?
Gosh thanks! And to alter to a child's size, just make the measurements smaller. Neck hole could be about the same, but the lenght/circle radius just needs to be smaller, and same with hood
I have a (not homemade) cloak that was probably meant to be full length for an eight year old, and is instead waist length on me; I absolutely love it. I suggest that those who are making cloaks for children intentionally make the hood with enough room for an adult head to fit (since you'll likely want it to flare dramatically on the child's head anyway, there's room to work with here), attach it to a full size neckline, and add a band of fabric to create a drawstring channel. Thread a ribbon through, sew it to one end of the channel, pull the other end until the neckline is gathered to an appropriate size for the child, sew in place on that side too. You can leave excess ribbon on each end for ties, or cut off the ribbon and add a different closure method. Then, the neckline can be re-expanded later and the cloak winds up not being outgrown but instead simply becoming a shorter cloak with less dramatic hood.
(Another option if you're using ribbon ties: instead of sewing the ribbon directly to the ends of the drawstring channel, sew a button just inside each end of the channel, and put buttonholes at various places along the ribbon. That way there's no need to rip out thread later. Of course, only do this if the child can be trusted to not undo the buttons willy-nilly and cause the ribbon to be drawn into the channel or even slide out entirely. Rethreading the ribbon would be just as annoying as ripping out the thread...)
I measure from the top of their head to the floor. Add an extra 2 feet if you want sleeves.
Based kids neck on his tshirt add couple inches
Question: is it all in mirror image on purpose? I thought you had a cool left-handed sewing machine until i noticed all the text was mirrored.
It's just how my camera films 😂 I sometimes flip everything but there were a LOT of clips for this video so it would have been quite the task to mirror them back
I made this cloak for myself last year. So easy and your explanations are great. I'm considering scaling down to make a cape for a doll. Have you ever used this technique for a very small cloak?
I have not but I believe it would still work quite well scaled down! Let me know how that goes 🥺
Bless you for this, and bless you for adding the companion guide. I've never made a garment, so this is exciting.
What length should I take for 13 or 14 years old child can you guide me
This turned out really awesome! I was looking for a cloak design that I could make out of wool blankets for bushcraft, hunting, survival, and general use. This is my favorite design!
thank you for this tutorial !! just out of curiousity, why did you use french seams ? is it necessary to use one or does it just provide a better finish ? because if I'm honest I had a hard time understanding how they work and I'd love to take on this project!
Your welcome! I use french seams because they are a simple finish to the seam. If seams are left raw and flat without a finish of any kind they fray. Lots of people will finish seams by serging the edges, or use pinking shears, ect so they can do one normal flat seam. But I wanted this tutorial to be doable without fraying for anyone, including those without the tools for the serging or pinking. If you want to try other seam finishes, a felled seam is also a very good idea. And if fraying doesn't bother you then a normal flat seam without any finishes is an option!
Great tutorial. I love watching other people create. The foam under your sewing machines is genius!
You showed it with so much detail. Thank you. I am going to do the cape to my daughter and she wats to play D&D with you
Thank you so much! I’m hoping to make a cloak for my hobbit costume. :)
I just finished mine! I used a furniture blanket so it was pretty thick, and I added a point to the hood and the point was pretty stiff, so if you're gonna do a point on yours make sure it's not super thick, but regardless it still turned out really good!
I’m going to try and make this cloak today... wondering if you have any tips for adding in a lining to the whole garment?
For lining the whole thing, you can skip the french seams and make regular flat seams instead. And the lining should be the same exact shapes. Sew both together as normal, skip the hems. Instead put good sides of fabric together and sew all around, leaving a hole. Pull inside out, and close the hole, press. And it's a lined cloak
ok but… whats the width of my fabric?!?! how do i figure thatout!
Thank you for this! My cousin told me to make one for him to his wife and this is gonna help me so much thank you ❤️
Thank you for a clear and concise tutorial, without weird and unnecessary patterns. I guess I know what my next project will be.
Thank you Annie! I bought my polyester fleece fabric from a queen/king size duvet cover (soft and a little fluffy on one side). Going to use it to keep warm in cold times, and to go with my Witcher cosplay! (Grey colour). Going to make it smell super nice, too 🐺✨
This sounds awesome! Sounds like you will be so cozy
Ah no my fabric starts off at about 90" square- so I'll watch your tutorial for guidance and think creatively.. Tomorrow. I'm also 6ft tall so this will be an interesting challenge.. Any ideas/tips welcome!
Thank you so much for this tutorial, this saved me a lot of time. I'm going to wear this as Red-Riding-Hood on a day we call "Fasching/Karneval" in Austria. (It's similar to Halloween, but not spooky.) :)
Thank you for your tutorial!!! I love it!! Excellent work - your cloak is GORGEOUS!!! Thank you for sharing your talent with us!
Спасибо от русского зрителя, я искала видеоурок для того чтобы сшить костюм на Хэллоуин и ваш показался мне самым понятным, хоть я и не понимаю по англиски.
Thanks, you very nice :3
Haha, I really very bad speak in English.
Thanks! This helped so much! I'm working on a fully self-sewn outfit, and this video helped me to make my half-cloak with a big ol' hood :)
I own A Gnomes Shoe Repair, I wanted to make cloaks for fun photos for the store, I GREATLY appreciate you!!!
Oh wonderful! Glad my video was of help 😊
This is awesome, thank you! As an amateur with fabric and sewing this was super detailed and easy to follow. I used this for my Sylvie (Lady Loki) cosplay, used green instead of blue. Thanks again!
Can this be done by hand and with tulle couse im thinking of making one that pairs with my prom dress
It absolutely can! Totally possible!
Made a quilted cloak using this simple tutorial! Thank you so much I love it.
No pockets for pens, paper, dice, and miniatures?
Those can definitely be added in quite easily!
Thank you for this well explained tutorial! :) I am going to do this for a Halloweencostume and am so excited to follow your tutorial instead of just buying a cloak
So the length is only haft circle right???? I very confused and english is not my fav language
This is a really great tutorial, my problem here is that I have no 9dea where to get any fabric that big
Most fabric stores carry fabric that is 60" wide. 54"-60" is typically the average. Just keep in mind most fabric stores fold fabric in half when they put it on bolts.
We made 2 capes using a similar design but the hood is a bit heavy and the tie off at the neckline slides up to the throat. Not very comfortable for long wear time. Any ideas for keeping them in place?
I'm doing a school project and chose to do mine on Red Riding Hood just so I could make a cloak. This was a very clear tutorial, I like it :)
I'm very much a novice (with a skilled wife), and managed to make this all by myself, thank you. Do you have any tips for helping the drape of the hood? It sort of just flops around at the top.
Hi Annie, I'm going to give this a try. I would like to line the hood only, do you have a tutorial for that, or tips you can recommend? I'm a beginner! THX
Hello! I'm pretty tall, do you have any tips how I should measure the size of the fabric according to my height?
Does this work for giants? Aka I’m 6ft and bulky
Two questions: What type of fabric did you use? Also, what size of fabric do you think I should use if I were to make it floor length? I’m 5’4”
The fabric I used is called sudeine- a fake seude. And to figure that out you would need to measure from the nape of your neck to the floor. I can't do the math off the top of my head as even a 5'4" person can have this measurement vary
Annie Chie okay thanks so much! I’m not into D&D but I just really wanted to make myself a cloak
Nothing says it has to be a DnD cloak ;)
I have the same cloak. And my question is, will it be okay to walk down the street in it? Ie, use it not only for cosplay, for example. I think people will look askance at me...
I have a problem with the sizing, can you help me? My height is 153
I had SO much fun making this! I am a beginner sewer but had no problem at all making it! Thank you so much for sharing!
I’m 5 ft 5 in. Should I use the same sizes you did or shorten it
You can just leave it as is! It would be a tad longer on you (I am 5'7") but it would reach farther down your calves, this is not a floor lenght pattern.
@@AnnieChieDesigns Sweet, that means it will be like a perfect height for what I want. Making a modified red riding hood costume and I prefer longer cloaks. (I'm 5'4")
I made the most awesome jedi cloak from this tutorial! Thank you so much for posting this!
I wish I watched this before I bought my fabric today 😂 I ended up buying like 7 yards of fabric
Thank you for this tutorial! I’m having a slight problem with my cloak however and I was wondering if you knew the solution!
The cloak itself is made out of this ribbon material, it’s stretchy but it has some weight to it, when I tried wearing the cloak, the bottom part didn’t reach the floor because the fabric was collecting in the middle and it almost looks like a droopy bag 😅 I have some ideas to fix this but I would like to hear what you would do before I try anything-
Thanks! :)
I wish I could help more but I can't really tell what the issue is from your description. Collecting in the middle - did you line the garment or was it caught on something? Or was it the way the fabric itself was behaving?
@@AnnieChieDesigns I have not lined it yet and I believe it’s how the fabric is behaving, the fabric is solid white rib knit if that helps, and instead of the fabric touching all the way to the floor, it almost folds in on itself and gets stuck near my lower back. I’m not sure if I didn’t something wrong but the fabric curls instead of going straight down 😥 I have a feeling that it has to be something with the material itself and if that’s the case I might have to line it with something that is more stiff or cut the cape and sow it back in a way that it keeps it’s shape better- hope this helps a little better!
Question when cutting the bottom, how do you not get it curved so even not with a dip on the sides?
I used this a year ago to make my wedding cloak and just recently found you again. Just wanted to say thanks for the tutorial and pattern! It made for a really special an nerdy day for me and my wife!
Oh I am so glad to hear this 💖 thank you so much for finding the video again and letting me know!
how to make cloak from Batik?? please
Thank you!! This is literally the only video I’ve found that makes sense to me! I can’t wait to try it out!
Fabric Name Please
Pointed hood you say?
The most easiest and clear tutorial thanks a lots ❤️
What if you are 6'2" tall? Will 60 inches be enough length???
Just measure what you need by measuring your body from your neck to your foot I think!
This is the best sewing tutorial I’ve ever watched! Your explanations are to the point and descriptive and concise enough for me to understand what you’re saying the first time around, instead of me usually pausing and playing and rewinding to finally understand it. Thank you!!!!!!!
Wow thank you for such a compliment. I struggle with tutorials sometimes too so I am glad my efforts to make this easy to understand paid off! You are very welcome!
Do I need to machine wash material first?
Its recommended to always wash your fabric before sewing with it!
nice love from me
Lovely tutorial, however, I am having a difficult time understanding the seems. Specifically the seems regarding the hood
At 9:01, do you mean that we have to hem just the bottom? I'm confused, there's just so much hemming lol. Also do you know where I can buy white faux suede 50in×100in??
thank you so much, that will really help me with my cosplay
You are very welcome. Very glad to hear it will be helpful!
nice
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!! I LIKED HOW YOU EXPLAINED THIS GARMENT AND GAVE GREAT written DESCRIPTION ❤
If I were to buy more fabric, like 6 meters, would it still work out? would it only be longer in the end? Or would the neck line be affected? Because I have to make a very long cape for a project...
Using this tutorial! Wish me luck, I'm nervous
Super helpful! Thank you! I’ve never sewn before, so this was quite a project for me. But I’m going to a Ren Faire in a week and wanted my costume to pop, I figured a cloak would be perfect for that “Mysterious Cloaked Figure” NPC look. I followed your instructions minus a few of the finer finishing things like ironing and did everything by hand, but it turned out great! So happy with my costume:) thank you so much for your simple explanations that even a beginner can do!
Thanks from İstanbul Türkiye.
Excellent and easy-to-follow tutorial. Thank you so much.
I was wondering I made my own cloak but it keeps sliding around and falling off do you have any tips to stop that from happening
Used this cloak for a Melina cosplay ty for the tips sewing DM!!❤️
Just used this to make a cloak for my friend and it looks amazing! He's really happy with it!
Thank you for this tutorial, I may be using a modified version for my Mujika cosplay
thank you so. much. i am young, and im hoping to make this for a renn faire. this looks simple and relatively lightweight, not too unbearable for spending all day outside during summer in texas. gotta try and keep cool, so ill probably go with a satiny fabric like youre using here. maybe ill even try and make the hood more rigid so it keeps its shape when its up. :)
I feel like 3D Printed parts could make this so cool, like maybe at the end of the cloak 3D spikes or something?
What type of fabric and where did your purchase?
Do you think I could make this cloak from suiting wool and line it? I need it to be warm for a partially outdoor event in UK winter
This was a super helpful tutorial. I am making a Harry Potter robe for my son's Halloween costume. The robe was okay, but I did not get how to do a hood or encase the seam so it would not show. You explained it really well. Thank you!
Loved your tutorial!
I accidentally made an enormous hood lol, is there a way to ajust the size once it's attached?
Can you sew 2 fabrics together to get that silky look to it, and it still look the same way?
best sewing tutorial iv seen yet, Awesome . Thank you.
using this video to make a raven cloak for halloween x thank u
this is such an amazing video, thank you!!
thank you so much for this video !! you make it super easy, i love my cloak. made it for my Raven from Teen Titans costume !💜
Great tutorial and I really liked the idea for stabilising the machine too . You're a good teacher.
Following this for Ren faire this weekend :D
I watched your video on your winter cloak and I live somewhere where it rains a lot 9n the winter and I was wondering if there was a way to make them water/wind proof?
Been expecting bdsm costume but that'll do
Thanks for this, it really helped me understand how to make one of these. Have been wanting to for a while now. :)
I’m making a cloak for a dark elf cosplay
It seems you missed how much fabric to purchase. Fabrics generally come in 3 widths, but you need enough length. The width is fixed of course, but how long a piece you purchase is up to you. Your design or pattern will probably fit most people, but some might have to trim more or have a longer length.
Your not considering shoulder width or height, but only talking about forming a square.
It is mentioned to purchase 2× the width of the fabric so when folded you have a square.
This pattern is meant to be extremely simplistic hence the lack of shoulder measurements, ect. It's meant to be easy for those who may not be very comfortable with calculations and equations can follow along easily.
@@AnnieChieDesigns Check out a video by Guiding Bolt called "How to make a cloak. No sewing required!" She includes measuring for height. She also uses folded cloth and trims off material in a semi-round cut.
@@frankvazquez4050 well glad you found a tutorial that works for you then!
Awesome tutorial definitely understood very easily will be doing something similar, going to incorporate some sherpa for an outside cloak
I want to make a plauge doctor so that you so much!!
Has anyone tried using a king sized sheet to make these
How much fabric do you need?
Great Video!
I really needed this. Much appreciated
You need to model it more. Wear it , get some good shots
Yeah big question what were you supposed to do if your hood edge and your cloak edge weren't perfectly matched????
I show that a bit in the tutorial I believe, but you pleat the larger of the two into the other. Pleats make it more billowy
How do I add pockets??
So you could make patch pockets by top stitching a pocket shape on top of the cloak. Or if you are wanting something a tad more advanced, a welt or double welt pocket. Both of these I can not explain in a video comment but there are many tutorials for on youtube
Any tips on how to add a lining to this?
cute! both the cloak and u ;3
I'm using this video to create my own cloak. But did you use both folded layers for the cloak? I'm a little confused if the cloak itself is double layer or just single?? I don't want to waste too much fabric because I have other intentions with the amount I bought.
The finished cloak is just one layer of fabric. The pattern instructions show how to make a half circle, which is why the fabric is folded when it's cut, since it's cut as a quarter circle
When you say ‘wrong side’ do you mean the inside? Also I love this tutoria it’s very clear and very helpful !!!!
Wrong side refers to the side you want on the inside of the garment yes! On my fabric I wanted the suede look on the outside, making it the "right side" in this case
