Every single time YT gives us a surprise. Immediately after the first note I was drawn to this work. And I've never ever heard of this man. I'll google his name to find out what's going on. Hold my calls, I'm listening! Great so far. Thanks!
Yet another wonderful English symphonic composer. This is a powerful and gripping work with strong echoes of Vaughan Williams and occasionally a hint of Hindemith. Great performance too. Many thanks for the upload !
You have to ask why it is that this symphony is rarely, if ever, performed. I can understand Bate being totally ignored in post WW2 Britain as the only new music to be recognized had to be avant-garde but we live in more enlightened times now when the date of composition has little or no relevance. The more I listen to this symphony the more I like it and appreciate the talent of Stanley Bate.
Chris Breemer it could be the influencie of the twelve tone sistem . Many good componerse dont knew whar to do ; sadly .boulez and others are Guilty of this stupidity ( good composers)corrección)*. What no whar)* ah the corrector!
Encore un compositeur qui prouve, et avec quelle vigueur, qu'on pouvait être moderne au XXe siècle, sans changer de langage musical. Merci de me faire découvrir ce musicien passionnant.
Glorious symphony. I have not heard of him before. Thank you for uploading it. Seems hard to get on CD unless you're loaded. Ps. Now I have the CD, new product sourced from a Denmark dealer for £17.00 post free. I am happy with that. There are not many copies about it seems and although listed on the Dutton Epoch catalogue, is stated 'no longer available'. This should be re-issued and promoted.
Well, that was a powerful listening experience. I am not much on saying I hear so and so in a work, but on this occasion, at about 22:54 or so, Shostakovitch's 11th came to mind.
Doug Bower. I hear all sorts of other composers in different works, but because I listen to a lot of stuff, I can often not put a finger on who it is at the time. I agree with you here, in fact that entire 3rd movement reminds me of Shostakovich 11 both in the string sound at the point you mentioned, but also before (in the percussion and after that in the development of the idea. As I type I am listening to the fourth movement, and early in there are reminiscences of DS 7th Symphony, just hints but I hear it, and now around 32 minutes its there again (S7 4th movement) Still this is an excellent an work. Its my first hearing and very glad I found it. [ Seems difficult to acquire on CD, unless you're very well-heeled. Not I.]
Further to my reply to Doug Bower: On reflection I realise my comment about Shostakovich 11 is out of place, as this was composed many years before Shostakovich realised his 11th symphony. So can't account for any perceived similarity. However further listening convinces me that there is a very strong influence from DS'.7th, especially in the third and fourth movements of this. Bate would most surely have had opportunity to hear the Leningrad symphony which was performed in UK (June) and USA (July) 1942. A 1946 recording was also made by the Buffalo SO, so he might have had access to a recording of it, and also he could have had access to the score. Bate lived in the USA throughout the war years and into the fifties. Despite this very (to my ear obvious) influence, I like Bate's symphony and think it stands up in its own right as having integrity.
I feel influences of another composer is not relevant. Mozart was influenced by Haydn, Schubert by Beethoven and Shostakovitch by Mahler to name just a few leading composers but this doesn't diminish their achievements.
On the strength of this upload I've recently bought the Martin Yates recording of Bate's 3rd symphony. Both these symphonies (3 and 4) are well worth investigating and their omission from live performances is a total disgrace and indefensible. This is music from a highly talented composer which is more than I can say for some of the contemporary crap which manages to get a hearing, more often than not never to be heard of again.
Agreed whole heartedly. There is so much noise, nonsense pushed on as world premiere. This is a strong powerful symphony that is modern but doesn't abandon tonality. I'm just hearing of him and his music in June 2024 ! I've been listening to Classical Music since 1972. Tells us a lot about playlists at classical music stations and record and CD stores.
Thanks for uploading this symphony! Any chance that you could also upload the companion work on this CD, namely, Richard Arnell's Seventh Symphony? Thanks again!
I dare not upload any Arnell because the one time I did (I think it may have been his 7th) RUclips blocked it and I received a copyright strike - 3 strikes and they take down your channel! - But I was glad to discover and upload the Bate symphony - great work.
This is damn strong symphony by a composer i never heard of. This isnt Pastorale music. Fabulous 😊
I love this symphony.....It´is so good!

A powerful symphony new to me. Thanks so much for uploading!

Yes, I absolutely agree. Sadly, the same could be said for many mid-20th century composers.
Chris Breemer it could be the influencie of the twelve tone sistem . Many good componerse dont knew whar to do ; sadly .boulez and others are Guilty of this stupidity ( good composers)corrección)*. What no whar)* ah the corrector!
Couldn't hear much VW in that! Maybe his 4th & 6th.
@@smijification His style is actually very individual. In fact I prefer this symphony to RVW’s 4th.
Intéressant. Influence de Bartok !!!!!
what an extraordinary work --so passionately performed.

Merci de me faire découvrir ce musicien passionnant.
What vigor (vigour) indeed. ;)
Completely new to me and I'm digging it👍
Passionate and curiously riveting

Your initial remark "powerful listening experience" was surely an understatement! That chap knew how to blow all the cobwebs away . . .
amazing symphony...thank you for the upload...:) Blessings!
Between 0.30 - 1.30 mins I hear Bartoks concerto for orchestra very clearly.
Yeah, I hear the same thing. In my case it's my Bartok-loving neighbours.😬👍
❤❤❤ this symphony recalls of "victory at the sea", ost by Richard Rogers.

What's the painting shown above?
I've just added the painting info to the description. Sometimes I forget .......
danke!!!
Great!!

Oh brother, did you ever say that just perfectly. Thank you for having the courage to say it ! Agreed !!

OK, thanks.
who is the artist?
Yes, I'd like to know too.
Partagé sur Google+
Is he a master?
Shall we append that on the front of his name?
But Master Stanley Bate seems a bit long-winded.
Better miss out his first name.
