    Just replaced mine this morning with the aid of your video. I had a complete failure. Removed the key and the key wouldn't go back in. The car was in "unsafe" mode to make things worse ( convertible top down, windows down, wheels locked ). As chance would have it, it failed in my garage.
    Took me 2 hours to remove those set screws. Very little space to work in behind the dash.
    I ended up building a 1" long screwdriver with a power drill bit and an 1/4" socket adapter that I wrapped in duct tape and some 22 gauge wire for grip. It worked well. Putting the replacement ignition switch in only took 30 minutes. For $10 I'm back in business now. Thanks for the video!

    Hi, just done my switch on my 986 Boxster here in the UK, without your video I would of struggled so thanks for that. I went through the vent like you but managed to get both screws. I removed the phillips screw on vent pipe and took the pipe out . Thanks again. Hope this helps someone else.

    Just did this last night. Mine's a RHD UK car. The difference is, those mini screws are accessible only from the TOP, so it's impossible to reach from the pedal area. I HAD to go through the side vent for all the unscrewing and rescrewing. Unplugging the purple connector and the ignition switch removal and reinstall was done from the pedal area with a bit of hand jiujitsu. Could not see any other way. This video was a huge help!

    Thanks for this. I had to do my 2002 996 C4 convertible today as was suffering all sorts of issues (centre consol stopped working - no heated seats, hood down, ear mirror demist etc - , key not removed warning, key sticking) and it fixed all. As I'm UK the car is right hand drive and the screws holding the ingnition switch in place actually face upwards. Taking the side vent off is essential and made the task so easy - I could do it almost all form the compfort of my seat! Thanks again Rick.

    Thanks for this vid. I've read loads of reports of people successfully removing the screws by going under the footwell, but no matter how hard I tried, just couldn't get the back one off. Was about to give up before I watched this. Removed the light switch and vent cover as suggested and there was loads of room to then get in and remove from above. Mines a RHD UK spec 996 so perhaps mounted slightly differently.

    Very helpful video. Removing the vent/headlamp switch trim assembly was simple and rendered the job quite easy. I definitely suggest that the air duct directly behind the headlight switch be completely removed (it nearly falls out onto the footwell). A 2" or 3" long common screwdriver would have been a nice tool to have. Next time; if there ever is a next time! Thanks for posting this instructional video.

    Fabulous DIY video on the 996 ignition switch. This is the second time I had to do this on my 2000 C4. I think the cheap part varies in quality and my switch got stuck when trying to start, forced the issue, and broke some plastic around the spring when turning, forcing back left. But the big improvement in doing this job was you suggesting to remove the left air vent apparatus, which gave me much more access. In fact I removed that back vent too with the philips screw completely and I could almost do the job on the top and not have to crawl under the God forsaken kiss the underside of the dash situation while arching my 68 year old back beyond norms, ouch. I could get one arm under neath while sitting in the seat and my left hand thru the vent hole, thus getting much more leverage. Thank you!

      Ha ha. :) " Under the God forsaken kiss the underside of the dash situation...." That made me laugh out loud! I feel your pain...crawling under the steering wheel multiple times was not fun. Thank you for taking the time to let me know the video was helpful! Means the world to me and keeps me motivated to keep trying to put out helpful and fun content. Glad you got her going again. Thankfully mine is still working well, but I think my left front window regulator is getting ready to fail. :(

    • @pschuepp
      @pschuepp 4 года назад

      @@AZdroptop And yes, been there done that. I knew my right side window regulator had a problem when one day the window just fell down within the door. There is a good diy on replacing. On mine the cable frayed until it just broke. The Chinese part I purchased via Pelican I think was better made than the original. Went together pretty smooth, tricky part is adjusting so it seals closed. Taking the door panel apart, many screws, careful with leather, and clips. Good luck. Thanks again for ignition switch instruction..... so if Porsche charges $1200 to do the job.... I can get work on this for $600 and do it in 30 minutes. Ha ha.

      Great to know thank you! My driver's side died last year and I had my Mechanic in Phoenix do it for me since he had the car for some other stuff. The big pain was when the Passenger side small regulator went out....The part alone is $800. Crazy stuff. I guess because it works with the top or something? Not sure, but it was a big heavy part for such a small window. Thank you Porsche tax. ha ha. Thank you again for the kind words and best of luck with your car. Despite the little problems I sure love this thing. Great fun to drive. Have a nice weekend.

      @@AZdroptop My 996 is a Millennium edition. I am the second owner, but purchased it with 5000 miles in 2000 for $100,000. Crazy. Yes, it was my mid life crisis but I also always wanted to own a 911. I love this car still, never get tired of it. Despite the under value of 996s on the market, we 996 owners know how much they are really worth. My brother in law has a 993 worth about $130K, and I don't like it, I don't like driving it, but it's market value is huge. Go figure. I love your video on the features of your 996 too.... good stuff. Eventually the market values will start to really go higher I'm convinced. @@AZdroptop I checked this afternoon, and with your clear instructions, I was able to do it within approximately 30 minutes. The main problem is the fact (like you said) that it is really really cramped in there and that the screws are difficult to see and reach even with a small flat short screwdriver. I succeeded though by removing the air vents and left front cover and by adding some artificial light in there to light up the obscured place. Then, even in this very tight space the two screws came loose and the multi-pin ignition connector as well. Just ensure that you don't screw the screws out all together because for one that's not needed to loosen the connector AND also it would be a PITA to get them back in. I've ordered generic VW/Audi/Porsche part 4A0905849 through my Porsche part seller locally here in the Netherlands, so that I can finalize this repair. Oh, almost forgot,in my case, there was another screw behind the black light knob that held the cover in place to the main dashboard. That needed to be removed as well and then the cover came off pretty easily. ANyway, thanks for your excellent help and video, this made my job sooooo much easier :-))

Then Team Parts NL located and sent (for free, thanks guys !) the correct replacement part, which I fitted succesfully yesterday. If I remember correctly removing the upper vent just gives more room down below to get to the really pain in the butt screws that are in the actually part you need to remove. I saw one comment on another site that after installing the ignition switch, the car would not start. They removed the switch, made sure the switch was rotated to “position zero” and put it back in. The 996 then started. Since my switch has gone bad, it seemed I had to turn it farther counter clockwise to turn off the ignition and get the key out. Is there a position on the new switch I will need to be careful to rotate to? Again, if I have missed something in your video, I apologize. Thanks for your series of videos.

      Rick Hutton
      At first, after starting I had to snick the key to the left to get accessories powered. It has progressed to the key being difficult to insert and remove. Which I’m told is the phase just prior to total failure where the key will not come out. And the repair expense goes up exponentially. So, sadly, the car is not being used at the moment.

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  5 лет назад

      Dennis, that is pretty much the same issue I had and I would bet that you just need the same part I replaced. Sounds crazy I know...I was pretty unsure when I changed mine out that it was my problem. Turns out it was. It is a very common failure piece and although a bit of a pain to change out, is pretty cheap. When mine started going bad the car would sometimes stay running when you turned the key to off, then It got stuck. I would give it a shot. Buy the part with the part number in the video, not the super cheap one that some places sell. I hear they go bad really quickly and you don't want to have to repeat the job anytime soon.

Sometimes when I pull the key out it's still registers that the key is in the ignition. There's a little message on the display that says the key has not been removed even though it has. Then today the key got stuck and would not come out. Some playing with it and wiggling I finally was able to get it to come out but I am not sure why that happened. Not even sure the two things are related. And thirdly not sure if this is the same problem you were having

    • @AZdroptop

      HI Michael, basically it began to be difficult to turn the key and then sometimes I would turn the key to the off position and the car would still think the key was turned to on. It would also get stuck like you mentioned. My guess is it is the same little switch. A bit of a pain to change out because of room, but the part isn't expensive and not all that bad to change.

      HI Joe, it has been awhile, but I believe they were normal threads so yes on the Tighten = Clockwise.

    Could you provide the part number of the switch? I have a 2001 911 Turbo. Thanks for the excellent video.

      HI Patrick, thanks for watching. The part number was in the description. :) Here it is. Should be the same as mine, but I would double check just to make sure. Cheers. Part Number 4A0-905-849-B-M56

    Unfortunately I completed the part change and it did not fix the ignition. I noted when I attempted to insert the part it would not sit flush. I was able to finally get it flush by rotating the part but the key did not function. The other piece of information is that I was never able to turn off the car except when disconnecting the battery. Any thoughts?

      Sorry to hear that. When you say you couldn't turn off the car, do you mean the key would rotate to the off position, but the car would keep running? Did the key come out and the car would keep running? I'm going to look around and see if I can find something for you. azdroptopty@cox.net

      The one thing I would make sure of is that the part is installed correctly. Sounds like you have it in right, but might be worth a second look.

      You know it has been quite a long time so I don't honestly remember. Here is the part number:4A0-905-849-B-M56 Try Pelican Parts or www.autohausaz.com Just don't buy the super cheap one as I hear they go bad again pretty quick.

    Hi Rick, thanks for the video. You mentioned twice that you had watched a DYI video. Don't you mean DIY (do-it-yourself)? Anyway, such a minor criticism. Cheers Peter

      It was definitely a weird one for sure. The replacement isn't bad, but it is really cramped down there.

    I’m afraid my impatience and adult ADD are wasting your valuable time. Next will be the headlight switch. It is very tight, especially in cold weather. If it has to pull out before depressing the pin that holds it, it may be a struggle. Anyway, I have a 2001 Turbo and while it has only 17,000 miles, it is suffering a few age related problems. At my age, 72, I can understand. I look forward to viewing more of your videos. Thanks.

      His Patrick, absolutely no problem at all. These jobs are a bit confusing and a pain in the rear as well. Rewatching the video I am a little embarrassed with the camera work also. I honestly am happy to help in anyway that I can. I bet that turbo of yours is a real blast...I have not had the pleasure of riding in or driving one. Best of luck

      Rick Hutton My 2001 Turbo was owned by a friend, the original owner. It was driven and stored in Punta Gorda, FL. The owner was in declining health and wanted to thin his herd. The Turbo is Polar Silver with Metropol Blue interior. When I purchased it December 2013 it had 11,764 miles on the odo. The owner was a real enthusiast, so he had the ecu flashed and installed an Evolution Motorsports air intake. He asked me after I purchased the Porsche how I enjoyed it. I told him every time I drove it it tried to kill me. I agree with your statement in another video that engine noises freak me out. While the Mezger engine does not have the IMS problem, a $20,000 engine frag scares me. I’ve had a few problems such as window regulator, ignition switch, rear tires, visor mirrow plastic covers breaking, but nothing horrible. I saw your comment regarding rear tires. After reading reviews on Tire Rack, I last purchased a full set of Sumitomos. I like the feel and price. I don’t feel I gave anything up after prior Bridgestone Potenza replacements, yet saved a good deal of money. Please keep your videos coming. I’m glad I found them and being able to communicate with you provides a support system. Thanks.

      That is fantastic Patrick, thank you for sharing the info on the Turbo. It sounds like a beauty. Great comment, "every time I drove it it tried to kill me." :) It seems all of these Porsches, no matter their age, have these little problems to deal with. I too had a window regulator go out just a few months ago, but had my mechanic take care of that one. The cost savings to effort just wasn't worth it. Glad you are liking the Sumiomos...they have been great tires so far and I don't feel much difference if any over the PS2's that were on my car previously.
      I appreciate your very kind words about the videos. Thank you for watching them. Have a great weekend.
