I figure Daddy was mobbed up and got whacked by a joker in Hackensack, which is why he never made it back. "We know you're smokin' wherever you are". A hot place, maybe hell? Absolutely some of Fagen's best vocals.
Thank you for watching! You did a great job on all of your videos! We must have had a brain fart when we started this album, because we totally skipped Pretzel Logic. Will definitely check that one out soon!
I am by no means a big city guy but this song gives me that vibe. It's rather "stripped down" musically for a SD song. Very straight forward without change ups or layers like so many of their other songs. This is my first time hearing this song. I never owned the Katy Lied album and I don't recall hearing this song on the radio. I can certainly tell that it's a SD song but it's quite different to say the least.
Maybe Daddy is in jail, doing time? The Eldorado reference, he's a flashy gangster, maybe a made guy, hoodlum, that's also why he don't need no lock and key. He's got his piece well loaded and is connected. He went to do some deal in Hackensack, there was a rat in the house, the deal went bad, Daddy got pinched and might have been sent to Federal Prison, out of state. Maybe in Allenwood, PA?
@@dwgale01 You prolly right. On second thought daddy left and never came back, so he's either dead, killed by rival mobsters or he absconded on the lam and decided to change hi ID to star a new life, but that's no likely. Also if he's been pinched by the Feds and went into witness protection he'd surely would have taken Lucy along. So chances are he likely dead, and the culprits got rid of the body `a la Jimmy Hoffa.
@@sirezekiel6156 Most likely yeah, but given the mobster-like type that describes daddy and the vague references to 'daddy can't come', and most particularly '...where ever you are', indicates one of those classic cases where the subject left one day and 'disappeared', i.e. 'got whacked' but the body was disposed of never to be found, hard to prove the death legally speaking right away, at least for a while, to declare daddy 'legally dead' by the courts may prove difficult, even though most logical explanation given the facts and circumstance is indeed 'Daddy is Dead'.
glad you did this great old song,it's quite the story..not so much the Lost Weekend as..the *Last Weekend*.Ben's vid was great & cracked up over your reactions & comments!
I love love love your Dan reaction videos, but this ain't the 3rd album. It's the 4th. Again, much love to you both. From a boomer: I heard Do It Again in 2nd grade, it had a hook that even kids liked. I remember listening to the sitar solo on the back speaker of our station wagon, around 1973. I was taken by the lead singers voice, it was different from other bands. They never put DF completely in front, his voice just wasn't commanding enough. I always wanted more.

Lol his first mistake was going to Hackensack in the first place. Definitely agree on the vocals! Fantastic performance!
@@SightAfterDark Daddy's buried in a concrete support on the Lincoln Highway Hackensack River Bridge
My thought too!
"Daddy's fuckin' UP!"-- good one, Dan. Love you two, keep it up.
My favourite song from Katy Lied. Loved your guy's reactions.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed!
Thanks for the kind words. I love my Steely Dan. Don't forget to go back and do the Pretzel Logic album.

@@SightAfterDark Have you noticed that every SD album has the signature SD vibe, but each album has it's own unique personality?
Steely Ben you make some great videos
Steely Dan is perfection in Poetry....while it knocks your socks off with talented rock and jazz!
A fantastic character study in three minutes

Quite an under appreciated track, but a cracking good song none the less. It’s Steely Dan we’re talking about after all
Truth! Haven’t heard a bad Steely Dan song yet!
That pic of the guy in the urinal...is hilarious!
Haha yeah really took us my surprise
The true sound track to good fellas
Fantastic song. Fantastic movie!
One of my very favorite Dan songs. Best thing I can say is I wish it were longer...
Yeah
Daddy sounds like a bit of a lush.
Lol something like that
Donald and Walter- the OG daddies

One word: FUNKALICIOUS

Very possible!
I think Daddy got sent a lot further away than Federal Prison. Possibly several different places at once.

Daddy is dead.

SD does not do a lot of moralizing. IRONY rules supreme.
That’s for sure!

Thanks so much for watching Mr Zootalores!
If any one can relate to SD lyrics it’s you two cats !
Haha apparently
Witness protection or concrete shoes. Either way Adios everybody.!!
Somebody’s gonna be at the bottom of the river! Thanks for watching Matthew!

Thanks for the correction and thanks for sharing!
that solo.. chefs kiss
Lyrically, Fagan can't be touched when it comes to sarcasm.
We agree!
LOL... you guys are obviously born and raised here lulz
Steely Ben you're first discovering? Their 4th album gets a bit grittier with this song.
Steely Dan's name is a reference to an adult toy coined, by gay women. (You're from NYC...you should know that) laughs
Why? Are there dildos all over the streets somewhere around here☺️?
@@SightAfterDark Simply a bit of unverified lore, I suppose. Certainly didn't intend to rile the citizenry. Google it.
