Even though I wasn't the biggest fan of rareware games, I can still acknowledge their absence hasn't been replaced by a single studio.

Once they were with Nintendo, their output in terms of quality, quantity and mix of genres was just on another level. So yeah, no one else has replaced them for sure.

I wasn't around then so I never felt the impact of companies such as Rare, only what they accomplished looking back, but yeah I see what you are saying. The sheer volume of games they made in such a short time span that were huge is pretty nuts and I don't think any studio can replace that especially nowadays with longer development times and bigger teams!

I guess it just gives an idea of how much the industry has changed from when you could release as much quality content as Rare did in just a few years, to having someone like Factor 5 make (in my opinion) the best Star Wars game crammed with content and studio technology in less than a year. Crazy. Thanks for watching bro.

Thinking about how Rare was practically begging Nintendo to buy them outright to help their financial issues. Nintendo didn’t, Microsoft did.

    • @ClockedIt
      @ClockedIt  16 дней назад

@@Devdev009 @Devdev009 Heh Microsoft certainly didn't buy Rare to help them out with their financial issues. The reality is, Rare was already splintering apart by the time Perfect Dark launched and I think Nintendo saw those cracks, amongst other things.
The Stampers took a gamble arguably at the wrong time as their games were slowing in sales and certainly taking different directions. They thought Nintendo would bite, but they didn't. They regret this I'm sure.

Nintendo will never replace Rare, but the spirit of Rare exists in every indie studio trying their best to make the best game they can
Nintendo can't replace Rare, because what made Rare so special was a number of then unknown developers and composers, powered by a dream and a passion to make good video games - I don't know if anyone ever played Yooka-Laylee, but Playtonic Games who developed it is largely ex-Rare staff including Steve Hurst, Chris Sutherland, Steve Mayles, Gavin Price and Grant Kirkhope; Yooka-Laylee was... okay. It's clear that these titans of our childhood had become complacent, Yooka-Laylee wasn't a bad game, but it was an attempt to grab at nostalgia and ultimately failed in that respect for me, and it failed because they were no longer trying to make a good game, they were trying to recapture an old game, and that almost never works

@@AFlyingCoconut I'm from the UK, so Rareware to me were such an important studio, not just for the games I played, but also for the countries once thriving and world known video game scene; so personally I knew the names of most of the key developers from there.
Either way, those days are long gone and I agree in many ways that the free creative spirit of Rare is housed in a number of studios who indeed try their best.
As for Playtonic, I love those guys, but yeah, the puzzle pieces haven't quite come back together for them in the same way.
I follow many of them on social media and can see that Nintendo desire in their hearts to both return to the old ways and also return to Nintendo. One can dream. Thanks for the comment.

@@ClockedIt I'm from Scotland so I get it - I spoke to Grant not too long ago actually, to pick his brain about the musical process he had at Rare - Wanna know his answer?
I'll paraphrase, but he said he was basically just a kid who didn't know what he was doing, which was true for a lot of people at Rare - For games like DK or Banjo Kazooie he relied on traditional UK folk melodies that kids tended to grow up with, for games like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark quote, "I was watching a lot of X-Files and Bladerunner at the time"
I think that's part of the magic Rare had, just a bunch of goofs barely even adults, with all the creative freedom to make the kind of game they want, unshackled by any sort of biases of what "makes a game good"

Pretty much it. The industry has drastically changed along with the expectations of its consumers; consumers who unfortunately have been lead into the direction and mindset created by a select few larger developers who have now shaped the industry into what it is, especially from a western point of view.
Grants a good lad and still a kid at heart, which I can clearly see, something we should all hang onto huh, our youthful playfulness. Nice chatting, hope you enjoy my content if you stick around, as I don't recognise your name sorry.

Rare was basically the N64 for me. There wasn't much else interesting outside a few other things on the console for me. So sad when they left Nintendo. The Gamecube could have been even better than it already was if Rare hadn't been binned off by Nintendo! I was gutted when they were gone as Nintendo was the route I was on at that particular period (it didn't last 😂) Factor 5 were brilliant as well, Rogue Squadron 2 is one of my fave Star Wars titles of all time.

We even knew what was being planned for Gamecube from Rare; a new Perfect Dark, a new Donkey Kong Racing game, Kameo and of course Dinosaur Planet/Star Fox Adventures. To this day, I still don't understand why Nintendo doesn't trust Retro to make anything other than Metroid and DK games. They've clearly proven that anything they touch, is pure quality. It's a shame because it just feels like wasted talent.

I don't think it so much trust, but perhaps priorities for Nintendo and confidence in Retro to deliver on those priorities, but still, after over 20 years, it would have been nice to see more. But hey, I'm not compaining about the peak Metroid and Donkey Kong gaming we got from them heh.

@@Cilverkid456 I understand this and I think we know that Retro were working on other things, but the reality is that they've been with Nintendo since 2002, so in those 23 years we have both unfortunately and fortunately just gotten Metroid and Donkey Kong. Whenever people bring up Retrostudios I always say like, yeah, the quality of their work is undeniable, but they made like 2 games in 25 years, haha! Echoes is no, DK Returns is fine, Tropical Freeze they did the port, and they weren't even first choice for Prime 4, lmao!
