High On Life tells the story of an unnamed protagonist--whom everyone calls "Bounty Hunter," even their own sister--fighting against an alien drug cartel that's invaded Earth. The cartel wishes to round up every human on the planet and sell them as the drug, which other aliens can consume via elaborate machines. Our bounty hunter hero is armed with Gatlians, a race of talking guns, and each Gatlian possesses its own attacks and abilities. The concept is admittedly very weird, but it's a well-told story that kept me guessing until the end.
At this point, it bears acknowledging that this is 100% a Justin Roiland project, complete with all the hallmarks of his comedic philosophy. Rapid-fire monologues, fart jokes, demolition of the fourth wall, ad-libs, dark comedy--it's all intertwined within the game's narrative and presentation. If things like Rick and Morty, Trover Saves The Universe, or Solar Opposites aren't your cup of tea, this won't be either. That said, I have a very high tolerance for this sort of goofiness and I found myself laughing throughout the 10-hour adventure.

Aside from the Roiland humor which may not be to everyone's taste, this is just a soundly made game. The gameplay is fun, the art direction and music are lovely and original. I think it is getting unfairly judged by a lot of players and reviewers.

@@LeBeauFred23 Same. They put out a performance patch day one. I played it before the patch and it felt pretty iffy with the framerate, but after the patch, it feels great.
@RUclips Userman It came out day one, so you may of got the patch if you played since then? If you have the patch and it's still having performance issues. I would suggest maybe uninstalling and reinstall.

With a game this colorful, it's important to have a stable framerate and FOV sliders. I played and enjoyed this game but I did have to take breaks because it was giving a bit of a headache after a couple hours.

I just finished playing this entire game and let me say that I love this game so much especially the ending and the possible secret ending which could lead to a sequel for this game. If so I’m so ready for a sequel!
Compared to god of war ragnorak this is nothing. Oh and basically every ps exclusive 👍

A game like this deserves a 10 just for trying. Not often do you get a game with such excellent world building.

@@gobalexpress05 $60 is well worth it for 10 hours if the 10 hours are really fun. You can also replay games if you like them. Or spend more than 10 hours in the game instead of just rushing through objectives. Stop and listen to dialogue and interactions.

I absolutely loved the story. The second last bounty where your fighting through the office and you get drugged is insanely good. I wasn’t ready for how good the gameplay would actually be. That mission is seriously one of my top 10 fav missions in gaming history. What a game.
The talking gun is the best part in the game I have a feeling that we will see in games in the future

No. This isn't new tech. All you rock and Morty fans are boosting this junk way too much. Not saying you shouldn't enjoy it but to think this is peak gaming is a joke.
I finished the main story in about 9 hours. One time I found a game breaking glitch where I was outside the map and kept respawning there but managed to get back to where I was meant to be. I kept saying outloud "this game is freaking awesome" super enjoyable I really loved it. I didn't find the guns talking to be annoying or anything, I enjoyed it! It can be toggled in the menu too and I made sure it was as often as possible :)
I'm about to finish my 3rd play through of this game. That's how much I enjoy it, I'm playing through this more than once.
This is the definition of polarizing. Either the humor and the world clicks with you or you’re going to want to pull your eyes out.

It definitely seems that the humor aspect is the most divisive aspect of this game. I just beat this game yesterday and I honestly had a blast playing it. The game is solid for a playthrough especially if you've already got a Gamepass subscription
It's so dumb, but it's so good at the same time. Has many funny moments and it just feels like one of those games I used to play when I was younger. Yea it's not some masterpiece, but it's a silly fun time that entertained me throughout the whole game.
It's got a full commentary track from the guys over at Red Letter Media. I was kind of sold on it until I found that out, but now, I think I have to play it.

This map design reminds me of Crash tag team racing map where we got choice to do the mission or just freely explore each part of the map getting all of those collectibles and some minigames but this time it was in first person and shooting games ahhh such nostalgic

I just finished beating this game on Hunter challenge and I'd like to say this is probably a 9 out of 10 game so art style is very good on the series X the story was funny and entertaining. Game plays awesome and for what the game is perfect and the sound is amazing and some of the songs are bangers.
About 2 and half hours in and having fun with it. Just play it through Game Pass everyone if you like you like it, if you don’t you don’t.

This was hands down the best review I’ve seen for High on Life, so far. This is for one simple reason: The reviewer treated it like a video game with ridiculous humour, rather than an adult comedy that has some gameplay. The opposite approach was the exact reason why The Order 1886 failed so miserably. When it was first announced, everybody marvelled at the graphics, the story premise, and the overall tone of the game. When I first saw it, I was skeptic for the reason that I had seen no particularly interesting gameplay to match this beautiful steampunk world. Every trailer that followed gave me no reason to believe it was anything more than just a movie with a few interactive features; that’s not why I play a VIDEO GAME. It came as very little surprise to me that upon release, it was exactly as I suspected from the start - Pure style over substance. When High on Life was announced, I feared this would follow the same mentality from the developers. It was only once I started seeing a few gameplay trailers in the past few months, that I could see a lot more gameplay potential in it. Knowing Rick and Morty, I was very hopeful that it would be a unique gaming experience, given that the show is far more than just obscure comedy, but is incredibly creative and well thought out. I’m yet to play the game but from the reviews I’ve seen so far, they’ve definitely given as much thought to the gameplay as they have to the humour. What annoys me is that this is the only review so far that acknowledges the fact that aside from walking simulators, a VIDEO GAME (even point and click games are about creative puzzle solving) should NEVER prioritise story over gameplay, and that players shouldn’t be focusing on it either. There’s been a few games this year (Shadow Warrior 3, Evil West and now High on Life just to name a few) where the main priority has just been about fun gameplay, and countless players have said how we need more games that are just gameplay driven. In-depth experiences like TLOU are amazing, but sometimes players just want to kick back and have some fun! So yeah, all this to say that I’m really glad the reviewer opened by saying they knew what they were getting into humour wise, but they were playing to uncover what gameplay experience they would find mixed in, to go ALONGSIDE the humour. You of course cannot review this game without talking about the comedy, but please please PLEASE can we have more reviews like this that show developers that gameplay is still god in a video game!

If you like the comedy, it's a 9/10 easily. If you don't, it's a generic mid shooter 6/10. There are much better shooters, but I love Ricky and Morty / Solar Opposites comedy so this game is in my top 10 already. Funny af. Hopefully they make a second one with better shooter mechanics and AI, and keep the comedy.
I just downloaded it today off Gamepass and aside from loving Rick and Morty and the Solar Opposites I absolutely love the game even without the comedy. Such a great time

The fact that the gun knows that you press the paused buttons instead of fire button on quick tutorial was totally hilarious and it's totally breaking the 4th wall
Outer worlds on drugs
This is one of those games that's going to be real successful thanks to game pass. Hardly anybody's going to pay full retail price for this game.

This is a great game overall, definitely an improvement over the first game they made, I hope future games will improve even more, maybe make like this but open world? Imagine the open world with lots of random funny encounters, and stuff you can immerse to.

I loved it! Thought it was a fantastic game where the focus point was just: having fun.
Blade runner song also plays in this, also Redlettermedia voices which is freaking awesome, I won't tell you where but it's a pleasant surprise

$60 for 10 hours of gameplay? Uh, no thanks, that is way too little for way too much. I want it but not that bad. 10 hours.... sheesh.
It's more than 10 hours if you want to do other stuff in the game. IGN stated that they spent 16 hours. There's also the other option of Game Pass. To put it into perspective Uncharted can take about 8-10 hours for the main story.
Heard gamepass is free too. Try it before mocking it. Granted some “comedy” prob not for some

@@Energyone 8-10 hours is pretty standard for a lot of games unless they're sandbox or RPG games. How long were you expecting? Honestly I'm glad it doesn't drag on like Assassin's Creed Valhalla does. More hours doesn't mean a game worth playing all those hours.
@@Energyone It doesn't matter if Uncharted came with YOUR PS4, a lot of people bought that title. Point is, you can't say "that's a lot on money for a 10 hour title" when other games, like Uncharted is the same way.

Very good review, agree with everything, combat is fun but can drag from too many enemies, gun / npc talking can last too long etc but overall it's a very funny game with some interesting combat

I just hope 7/10s will start getting love they deserve, cause this score always seems to be the most honest for mainstream outlets. I love things like The Last of Us Part 2 and enjoy God of Wars but the overblown praise for them hides fun games like this and I'm saying it hating Rick and Morty style of humour.
If your playing this game and you actually get tired of all the dialog from the guns then your playing the wrong game

I'm like 4 hours in and i honestly feel annoyed and need a break, but it's really worth a go if youre into the humor, gameplay is serviceable, the world is surprisingly fascinating, and the soundtrack is excellent.

It’s a great game with great humor and great visuals. And the gameplay is plain old fun. Justin was obviously the magicac factor behind Rick & Morty because season 7 is obviously not as absurdly funny as the first seasons or for example this game is.
I actually had ...fun. Yes, enjoying the humour is part of it, i reckon there are alot of you who will. It's not an average game and reviewers are failing to categorise the comedy as a feature of the game. Yes, that means as a genre in of itselt it ranks highly.

Watching gameplay of this seems like listening to a band without drums, it seems to be missing a layer that creates flow. Maybe it’s the point of view disorientation with a gun looking at you but talking to npcs ? It just seems off
If Metroid Prime gets 10/10, this one is easily 9/10

Thats the problem nowadays. Every year a new assassins or cod, everyones hyped, fifa is basically the same every year since 99. now theres something different, instant hate. Sad.
its all the playstation Stans out in force along with sonys anti marketing money. they do it every time an original ip releases on xbox. they did it with sunset overdrive and sea of thieves just to name a few.
I just finished my first playthrough and I love everything about this game. And it's one of the few games in the past 5 years that I actually want to play through multiple times.
It really reminds me of the old 90 style NES and Sega games that were kind of off the walls bonkers and weird and I love that so much
For me its a 8.5 great game Inrecommend it and that hard boss that guy mentioned can be easier with creature making a flying bee to stay in the air, great boss fights at all oneof my favourite games this year.

Yes but the parts of him saying "here we go again" is making fun of games for doing waves of enemies. So it's going to do waves LIKE EVERY OTHER GAME THAT DOES IT(which is every fps) & they're making fun of it.

If you can manage to change region in Steam, it goes for 92 TRY in Turkey which is not even 5 dolars :) Also many games are waay cheaper in here due to unstabilty of our currency ahahah

The most disappointing reviews are the ones with a complete disconnect between score and actual review. The reviewer talks about having an absolute blast in the game, with a few shortcomingd. It doesnt read like a 7.

I love the 6th gen energy of this game.
I love the concept of guns that talk, that's silly and goofy, and the shooting is fun and engaging. But Roiland made this unbearable. There's no downtime, it's just Justin doing the same voice in different pitches.
