Good info. I've spent my life around rifles and often see vids like yours saying, "you've been doing it wrong" and I think, hey, I'm as willing to learn new things as the next guy, but don't waste my time. Often it's a waste of time, but not here. I learned something today, so thanks for that.
Great point Rich, I also orient my rifle so that the stock is to the wheels for when rolling the case. This gives the foam more surface area to sustain the weight of the rifle when on it’s end.
Super helpful info ! Ruger PRC (300 Win Mag) weights 15 lbs + scope, + bipod, + magazines. It’s enough to have a designated case just for that one rifle ❗️
Wow. I am just happy to have run into this how-to video made by a Navy SEAL Sniper. I will definitely heed your advice sir, even though I only transport my rifle to the local gun range to shoot at targets. I have no military experience whatsoever, so videos like this from pros like you are much appreciated.
Thank you. Good video. Especially with your learning experiences included. After my introduction to shooting with the SLR L1A1, I joined a smallbore club and was taught quite a bit by the guy who founded it, a Bren gunner from 2NZEF. One of the things I learned was never to store a heavy barrelled rifle on its side because gravity would wreck the bedding. I bought a small Pelican case and cut it out to take the receiver sight and bolt for my Anschuetz target rifle. That case stayed in the wooden rifle case. I am currently building a top opening case for a centrefire rifle. Typical carpenter, too many projects on the go.
One question. Why not the stock on the side of the wheels? If you walking and use the trolly the heavy part is up and not resting on the Buttstock. Rest is good info
The rifle is going to be balanced, there really isn’t a heavier end. The balance point will be slightly ahead of the mag well, which is right where his handle is.
I just bought my first hard case and the whole drive home after buying it I was like… “placing the rifle in the case with scope at the hinges makes zero sense and yet every picture online, the scope is at the hinges”. Made zero sense to me. So glad I came across your video, because it was driving me crazy.
HA! By the time I added a scope, my OEM case is too small. While shopping online, I kept wondering why others had their scope on the bottom and not the top by the handle. I felt it was wrong to do it that way. While searching reviews on cases, I stumbled upon your vid. Now, I know pretty much for a fact they have theirs upside down. THANK YOU.
Great video. I see a lot of people making this same mistake. One thing I would add though. If I was traveling frequently with a scoped rifle, I would remove the scope and pack it in it's own padded hard case. When dropped it will be under it's own weight (plus case weight) and not the entire rifle. Can't be too overprotective of a scope that costs upwards of $1000.
I don’t think I want to spend another $100 for an extra luggage. Plus that’s another box we need to worry about. I rather buy a bigger case and put everything together, with plenty of space around it.
Thank you for this video. I've wondered about this when I've seen it. I don't even carry my shotguns barrel side down in their cases, much less scoped rifles. Maybe it would help some if vendors didn't sell cases on their websites with a picture of the rifle in the case in the "scope down" position.
Good thinking on not loading your rifle upsidedown. One thing I like to do when I don't have cut out foam is to put the rifle in a soft bag then load that in the pelican case.
The quiet guy in the corner who doesn't like to attract attention but knows his stuff.Brief thorough info vs.tons of useless shit. Keep it this way Rich, never go mainstream.
It would also completely eliminate the point of this video if you just ordered a case with pick n pluck foam, or just ordered a sheet of pick in pluck foam to put in your rifle case.
BRAVO,BRAVO!!!! I’ve worked at at couple local gun stores and folks always have the rifle in the case with the scope at,what becomes the bottom of the case! And always ask them why. They be never think of it this way. Man, you’re resting your rifle on the scope turret!!! What could go wrong! Very good on the vid, hope plenty see it
I would take the Steiner on board with me, it's the value of the rifle. Bore sighting an ar frame by looking down the bore is easy, and gets me to 1 MOA.
You could also just use pick and pluck foam and then this wouldn't be an issue, or you could get some foam cut to fit your gun, and that would also make this a non-issue.
Anyway you can make a video of your 511 cams bag Showing how you use it and what you like and don’t like about the bag ? I’m debating if I should buy one myself I want know your opinion
I have always been told to keep the stock pointed towards the wheels. That way the barrel is at the top when you are using the wheels. Do you think it matters? You would still be able to have the scope on the handle side.
So funny I came across this video as I was looking for a new hard case for my competition rifles and thought the EXACT same thing...Why are people loading their rifles upside down in the case and letting that scope bang on the bottom! Nice vid...Sub'd.
I mean cut the foam so its sitting inside the case instead of on it. That has a huge factor in protection and keeping your zero more then the way its positioned
Hey man heard ya name drop deep south tactical. How are you liking the rifle. Just had them rebarrel a rifle for me in 6.5 CM as well. It shoots phenomenally well.
Another unnecessary but useful tip is to spray both sides and the interior of the cut foam with PlastiDip. Adds durability and reduces foam debris, as well as a moisture barrier
Great to hear you like the video, and that is a low vis gun case that looks like a guitar case I use for travel in un friendly firearms locations. Savior equipment makes it.
You need to flip your rifle to where the butt of the the stock is torwards the wheels...scope upwards torward handle...no sense in having the heavy end on the one you gotta roll threw the air port.
I have several that have expensive custom camo jobs, and they get scuffed amd scratched. I dont abuse them but i use them. They are tools, not fabrege eggs.
Problem is flipped, you can't check the action/chamber without pulling the firearm out, which means some minimum wage TSA guy is going to handle your gun. Use foam that fits key points like your forearm, handle and stock _very_ snug.. have room around the barrel and scope. include cut-outs for the mags. Done
Um.....because with the scope is already mounted, the optic is in harmony with the firearm and the shooter. Nobody wants to mount/dismount their optic all the time and probably re-zero.....
Respectfully, most of this information is inaccurate. It makes no difference how you orient the rifle in the case. If you have no custom insert, You can't count on TSA holding the case upright all the time. The case will be thrown around and will end up upside down at some point. Also if you have a custom foam insert, it shouldn't make a difference if the case is upside down or right side up. The foam spreads out the kinetic energy when hit around the rifle. If all the energy went into the scope then you have a poor insert as the foam should be contoured around all parts of the rifle evenly. I'm the Lead packaging engineer at caseclub.com
This a video we needed? It comes with foam to cut so just don’t be lazy and cut it lol you spend 5-10k on a rifle and you can spend another 200 on a case??
Good point, of course you buy a better custom case. IF I am going to spend a butt load of money on a rifle I am damn sure going to spend a butt load of money on a custom case that will protect the rifle. Just saying

Was anyone else just looking at his collection and not hear a thing? Lol. Awesome collection dude! Thanks for sharing. This helps.
Love how thorough this guy is
I purchased an extra foam inset and cut out to match my rig- zero shifting and moving. Thanks for the tip for the scope up!!
Amazon run out of foam inserts after this video 😜
Super helpful info !

The same goes for soft or hunting cases. Scope up towards the handle. Great advice.
yes! even more important in the soft cases
Thank you. Good video. Especially with your learning experiences included. That is very solid advice. I would have never thought of that. That might explain a couple of times when my zero was off. Pretty cool video rich!
no problem! hope it helps
Thank God .... someone else realizes the proper way to place a rifle in a gun case. THANK YOU, SON!

Time to flip my cut out 180° Thanks for the pro tip..
Great video. I see a lot of people making this same mistake.

Then you risk losing zero? No thanks...
@@StefanSu91 Not if you run a good mount. I can qd my scopes and put them back on and holds the exact 0 as before.
@@StefanSu91 that's why you can't cheap out on the mount. A quality mount will retain zero after detaching it
To be "over"protective is not necessary. And to be "too" overprotective is just insane.
I don’t think I want to spend another $100 for an extra luggage.

My only comment to this is that I like to have the heavier part of My Rifle nearer to the Wheels.
Great video, great points, Liked and Subscribed! And the 18 "thumbs-down" are from those who already hot-glued their foam inserts in upside down!
The quiet guy in the corner who doesn't like to attract attention but knows his stuff.Brief thorough info vs.tons of useless shit. Keep it this way Rich, never go mainstream.
thank you!
So glad I watched this before starting cutting.
All that time getting a degree in engineering and I never thought of this 😂 GREAT INFO, thanks for sharing!
💯 percent! This is the (only) way to do it
Just changed my cases around! Thanks man.
Great to hear!
It would also completely eliminate the point of this video if you just ordered a case with pick n pluck foam, or just ordered a sheet of pick in pluck foam to put in your rifle case.

Damn I have mine set up all wrong, good thing I came across this vid.
Awesome! Thank you so much for the advice. You ROCK!
What "old school shooting glove" is that? I like it
Just get stiffer foam. I cut military sleeping pads and fit them to the case. My scope doesn't even touch the foam and it is facing the bottom side.
Go figure. Sometimes the obvious escape us. Thank you. Question, how many inches, upper and lower, of foam do you have in the case with the cutouts.
Excellent points! Thank you!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Im just admiring your guns.
You could also just use pick and pluck foam and then this wouldn't be an issue, or you could get some foam cut to fit your gun, and that would also make this a non-issue.
You mean like he shows in the video?
Is the best way to store a .338 Lapua standing up, hanging up, or in gun case?
Anyway you can make a video of your 511 cams bag Showing how you use it and what you like and don’t like about the bag ? I’m debating if I should buy one myself I want know your opinion
yah we can do that
also..put stock end of gun over the wheels -- heavy end let wheels do the work.
Thank you for your wisdom.
never thought about it , it make sense
I have always been told to keep the stock pointed towards the wheels. That way the barrel is at the top when you are using the wheels. Do you think it matters? You would still be able to have the scope on the handle side.

Makes sense however I refuse to fly, I always drive. Too much bs at the airports and luggage gets lost or damaged.
I mean cut the foam so its sitting inside the case instead of on it. That has a huge factor in protection and keeping your zero more then the way its positioned
You mean like he shows in the video?
So my theory on the rifle bouncing around "settling the sights" is correct? lol
Hey man heard ya name drop deep south tactical. How are you liking the rifle. Just had them rebarrel a rifle for me in 6.5 CM as well. It shoots phenomenally well.
Excellent video.
Why not get a case with cutouts?
Thanks Rich! Love the “guitar” case as well! Haha
Using a Guitar Case to carry a Firearm can be viewed in some Jurisdictions as Concealment and can get you into a degree of trouble.
Another unnecessary but useful tip is to spray both sides and the interior of the cut foam with PlastiDip. Adds durability and reduces foam debris, as well as a moisture barrier
Great video man! I love the🎵Aaaaaaaa🎵
hahaha!!!
Is this the v770 model ?
great video thanks. btw is that a guitar? 👀
So am I crazy or is this problem solved instantly with better quality foam cut to the shape of the firearm????
I have several that have expensive custom camo jobs, and they get scuffed amd scratched. I dont abuse them but i use them. They are tools, not fabrege eggs.
Problem is flipped, you can't check the action/chamber without pulling the firearm out, which means some minimum wage TSA guy is going to handle your gun.

why not detach the scope from the rifle and put it on your hand carry?
Um.....because with the scope is already mounted, the optic is in harmony with the firearm and the shooter. Nobody wants to mount/dismount their optic all the time and probably re-zero.....
..SIXTY YEARS BEEN DOING THIS ...BEFORE THESE KIDDIES WERE EVER BORN! ..JUST COMMON SENSE...
Can't teach folks common sense tho. They have seen it this way for YEARS in movies and on tv
great video
You are a genius 🙄
TLDW: Put your gun in the case, with the scope towards the handle.
How about cutting the dam foam and the gun will never move!
custom cut out the foam -- 99% problems solved

Good marketing strategy lol optics up grips down always
Just buy a case from these guys and have them "Custom Cut" the foam for ya at a good $$$$ sign 👍
Makes sense
This is common sense or at least I thought it was.
Or you could get better foam.
It doesn't cost all that much
Cut your foam like it supposed to be so it doesn’t move at all. Problem solved
Or you can just cut out your foam
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
This a video we needed? It comes with foam to cut so just don’t be lazy and cut it lol you spend 5-10k on a rifle and you can spend another 200 on a case??
Common sense 101
No shit Sherlock
Nice room
Cheap husky tool box lol
Actually it's a very well built box. I use one daily at work loaded down with tools for remodeling apartments.
Good point, of course you buy a better custom case. IF I am going to spend a butt load of money on a rifle I am damn sure going to spend a butt load of money on a custom case that will protect the rifle. Just saying
