i use plasti dip for all my foam. works great... also if you use spray adhesive, there can be some spots where it is still tacky, go over with plati dip and bam, fixed.
If you want better results try the flex seal. I started with regular foam from Joe Ann's and got it to be nice and hard plus it makes the foam water resistant. Works great.
I tried this on a similar case from Amazon. It didn't work with one can. After spraying it all down good, it was better, but still began to fall apart. I tried it again, this time brushing on flex seal, and it's holding better. But really it could use a little more. Honestly, you'll need several cans of plastidip to get a firm hold (or several coats with a brush). This stuff is a basically a big sponge, made to soak up liquid, so that's exactly what it does.
Great Video! I have been using Pelican cases for years now and I have had the same issue with the pick and pluck foam and now that I have seen your video I will be able to setup both of my 1750 and 1720 cases up right. I have also been looking for a case where I could put a AR pistol or quick reaction setup and seeing what you did has given me a lot of ideas and turned toward the 1600 instead of the 1700 series case. I want a case that I can take with me on a plane and allow me to have a sidearm with me when I travel in states that honor my CWP. Bravo ZULU on your Case and Video!
Get a pc of 2"x 24"x48" kaizen foam $29. Shipped.it is closed cell foam.bonded 1/8" layers.hard to seperate layers but possible.but definitly the best bang for your buck.for a high end gun case.
Emphasis on "Well ventilated area". sprayed outside, but since it was only like 48-54 degrees out with a breeze, I brought it inside to dry in the basement and my entire house smelled like the spray even 3 days later.. very strong stuff.
Thank you for posting this video! I have used Pelican, and knockoff cases for 25 years to house electronics and computer peripherals. Love the pick and pluck concept, vs cutting foam w/ a hot knife, but the fact that the cubes can inadvertently tear off, is frustrating. So, finally have a solution!
Added tip for use with Plasti Dip - after shaking very well keep the can in hot water....the hot water allows the rubber particles inside to be VERY FINE. this will aid in a much smoother application and look.
Learning this the hard way: this is best done right away, when the foam is new and the blocks are together. I did the Plastidip spray a couple years in, when some of the blocks were very loose or missing. Do this the right away after you decide on your configuration. 2023 cost at Home Depot is about $10 per can.
I would spray first and then cut, not cut than spray. There are a multitude of different sprays / coatings you can use. 3-4 coats of flex seal works out really nicely.
Great video man. Other 'how to' channels should learn from you. Clear and concise instructions. Details presented without rambling on unnecessarily. No unnecessary camera moves. Background music is in the background, not competing with the presenters voice. Well done sir!
The only reason I don’t want to do this, is that as a photographer, my gear is constantly changing, so I want to make sure I can always add slots for lenses without having to buy a whole new set of foam
use some warm water in a bowl to warm up your plastidip bottle. Not boiling! Just hot tap. Then shake it well, it will loosen it up for a better spray. around 20cm (7.5 to 8 inches) is the best distance to spray from. About three coats. Let each coat dry.
Love plastidip! Used it for years on my car, blacking out the silver/grey highlights on the grille and bumpers and gave all the chrome trim a nice black matte finish. Been 4 years and still holding like new. Also rebuilt and refinished a hon lateral cabinet using dip on the handles for grip and coat the sharp edges. First coat is supposed to be a half spray dusting to give the following coats something extra to adhere to then lay it thick with wet sprays after that. Gonna go the extra mile by grinding & sanding with my Dremel for better shapes and cleaner edges after I pluck the cubes before dipping. Making a QuickDraw case for 4 pistols .
Would you recommend coating the foam with the Plasti-Dip before or after cutting it? I was thinking maybe I should coat it first as I feel that could make it easier to cut, but what do you think?
Bought some of this Plasti Dip to cover an Artemis P15 wooden stock... it's best to sit the can in warm water 5 minutes then a good shake before spraying as it comes out in a nice uniform fine spray :) ps nice idea on the foam I'll certainly be using this stuff on my gun case foam
I was inspired by your vids to finish my Pelican 1600 go box. The plasti-dip tip worked perfectly. My AR pistol is nearly identical to yours. Went with my Sig M11A1 for the handgun. I added a spot for a Howard Leight Impact Sport hearing pro. I also cut a small section in the second layer of foam for a desiccant pack. Thanks for the vid and the ideas!
I know this video is from 2016. I noticed in the video you said the Plasti Dip spray was $.5.99. Today in 2024 it's almost 4 times that amount of money. priced at $21.99. Holy crap inflations sucks.
Great tip, Kotaboy. I just started picking & plucking my brand new Pelican 1510 and already the pieces are coming apart. I’m going to get some Plasti-Dip. It might take a little practice. But a whole new set of P&P is only about $40, so if I screw it up, it’s not like I wrecked a $180 case. Also, you are clearly no fan of the factory P&P, so I give you extra points for not using a word that rhymes with “pluck” every time you call it by name! :D
this works great. nice job on the case. although the area you have blank seems a waster of the space. perhaps you might have been best served with a smaller case. for everyone bemoaning chemicals and moisture...you don't store long term in this situation. if you do, just throw a couple of silica gel pack in the case. also, you should check your guns every couple of weeks based on the humidity in your area. leaving this in the Florida area for months will be your own fault when it looks like a rusty anchor.
Thanks for the video. I was hoping there was some solution like this! I am wondering how hard is the surface. How much does it harden up? I still need it to absorb shock to the product inside.
Is the plasti-dip rough on the firearm? If it is drying hard, wouldn't it scuff the firearm as it is being removed and reinserted? Just curious as I just got a case and this looks like a great idea as I was thinking of putting the pick n pluck on bottom and carving on the solid pice. Thanks, and great video.
Great Tip - just got a CaseMix for my Nikon Z6 and kit lenses and adapter (for non Z lenses) so we are talking about $4K and I was sticking it away with other stuff not good to keep near this equipment... but I will - constantly - be pulling and pushing at the sides of those grooves... this should do the trick!
I hate that "pick-'n-pluck". Wish they'd give you an option...Thanx for providing an alternative. Also, great idea with breaking down the upper from the lower - will have to try that.
Can you do an update on how this mod held up over the past year? A question, Is it soft and if so,, does remain soft? I don't want it scratching my gear. In my case, camera lenses and bodies. Or gassing off, which will fog/coat the lenses. TIA
I went the Apache route as well, as good as the case is i hate the pick and pluck foam, i believe ill use the Plasti Dip on it but im gonna order a couple pieces of the solid foam and use a hot knife to cut out the layout, i think it'll give a better look overall, thanks for the video
I used it on a Fde part that wasn't even close to the rest of the Fde parts. Worked great, holding up. If you like the heavier texture matte finish. I'd use it again.
Does the foam still have give to it? I don’t have a foam cutter so I just use the squares and it doesn’t fit exactly but I’m worried the plasti dip would make it too solid.
I concur, especially for us OCDs. Plasti Dip evens-out the appearance because it fills gaps, and stabilizes shape. Disliked having to buy it but at least it can be used on other items.
i'm assuming its good idea to have it all plucked out and set up the way you like it before you spray it down with the plasti dip. I thought about doing it on mine...but my set up in my case isnt' complete. My fire arms hasn't had its red dot put in yet and will need future cutouts for it.
Thank you for this video! I have a Pelican 1400 case for m,y DJI Mavic Pro. I fly my drone alot and after the first few weeks I noticed the Pick N Pluck foam as started to show some wear and tear. I would love to get a foam cut-out specific for my Mavic however its more than half the price of the case just for a foam replacement. I'll spend $6 or so on a can of plasti-dip. Awesome video!
That is amazing! I will try this when I buy new foam for my cast. Also, if you have a access to a laser cutter, you can cut out that same pattern into a thin piece of acrylic with color of your choice (preferably opaque) and glue it on top of the foam. It will make the case look uber professional. I got the idea from Tested.
Bacawaka acrylic defeats the shock absorption of foam. If I'm protecting anything with foam padding, I don't want to add a sweet looking but hard piece of acrylic for my gear to potentially bang against.

Help ! lol ok I've got a case with the same removable blocks. And had it so long they've broken down. Can you tell me where I can get New solid foam sheets from. I can't seem to find them. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for the video. keep up the great work.
Kotaboy32 Tactical Firearms Review well I tried to get the size I needed about 8 months ago and they only had narrow slips that I would have to place 3 side by side. I haven't looked since. but would love to get the size I need for my AR. Thanks for the help. ill go back and look again.
Hey Kotaboy32 what pelican case is that, I have a 7.5" barreled ar pistol and and ar 9mm with a 4" barrel, I would like to do a case like yours. Thanks
+Jon R also, if you have foam that needs replaced I found a place that has high quality foam for a lot less than the pelican brand stuff and they sell while sheets of it. They have charcoal standard and charcoal firm up to 4" thick. I'm ordering a couple sheets just to have for when my foam needs replaced. They also offer custom water jet cutting if you want to have the foam cut perfectly. Here is the link for the charcoal foam for gun cases as well as eggcrate charcoal foam. www.foamforyou.com/custom_foam_packaging.htm
You can buy closed cell foam for these cases. Going further, my Plano case has two layers of foam on the bottom part of the case. One of those is "pluck foam" and the other is just a solid foam sheet. What I do is put the pluck foam as the bottom piece that the items just sit on and I cut out the other piece for the items and it goes on top for the items to fit in. So you just reverse the foam sheets essentially. Also, and this is important for all firearms owners to understand, foam cases are not a great way of storing your firearms long term due to them having foam. Foam sucks up humidity like a sponge and moisture is not good for your firearms. This is especially true in humid climates. So if you are storing your firearms in cases with foam, you need to throw some silica gel packs in the cases as well and change them out regularly.
I've ordered two cans of Gun-Metal Gray Plasti-Dip to do my two Pelican cases. I already have my items set in my cases, so I'm just waiting to do the Plasti-Dip. Won't the Plasti-Dip bond the upper and lower layers together? Thank you for this Video.

That is a nice way to strengthen the foam as good job as I also like the way it looks with the black color....
Awesome how-to video, I like especially that you explain to adhere the two pieces together after plucking them both. Thanks Much!
Did this to one of my pelican cases a few years ago with my 30-06 & 300win mag. Hotwire cut outs and almost 2 cans later, it's still looks great.
