nice explanation of the strumming technique!! very useful!
But the c chord and the d chord are played on first string (strumming g) and the 4th and 5 th string! watch the video and you'll see mr Cahill playing 4th and 5th string. the c chord is on both 5th fret and the d chord is 4th string 5th fret and 5th string 7th fret. that adds more feeling into it.

I hadn't heard of Dennis Cahill until he passed away RIP. I listened to a bit of that clip. He seemed to use a very percussive, almost atonal style. You might get the same effect from the old washboards that used to feature in Jug Bands and Skiffle Bands. That's perfectly alright of course as the music known as Irish traditional music was never meant to be backed with diatonic chords - bad news for guitarists of course, but there are plenty of other genres where the guitar can feature. The beauty of Irish Traditional music is in solo or unison playing and its use of subtle variations on western tempered tuning. Did Mr Cahill ever play the melody of any of those tunes or was he always playing accompaniment?
Yes, he often switched to melodies- check out the live in Seattle recording, that's one of my favourites!
I thought that Dennis tuned mainly to DADGAD? I guess not? In any case, thanks so much. This was enlightening.

Haha no, he just plays perfect chords with very few notes!
