Thanks so much from Australia, I am 75 years young with me/cfs and arthritis in right hand 2nd finger, and also thumb to hand joint so finger-picking difficult but not impossible, but strumming would be easier for me i think. Thanks to your marvelous tutorial of starting with 2 note chord shapes i think i can do it your way.Had a look at a few other sites, but find yours really easy to follow, and hoping with a bit of regular practice i can play a few tunes eventually. So thank you so much for excellent video tutorials.I just did 15 minutes after re-tuning guitar to DAGDAD and thoroughly enjoyed it so have subcribed have a great day!

Great video, very helpful! The Mode Wheel looks like a cool invention too. One note: check the tuning on your guitar, it's flat, so it makes it hard to play along with. Just letting you know. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks I seriously needed this since I tuned to DADGAD and now the locals are like ''hurr durr play a song like an actual song for us'' and I play doom metal so they don't understand the bassline IS the song lmao UHHHHH
Thankyou! Please have a look at the Free Playalongs section on the videos page at Https://folkfriend.co.uk/videos/ There are several tunes there you can practice with for free (Maid Behind The Bar is in D) and lots more with on-screen chords and explanations for all the substitutions if you sign up for the full pack by clicking "Playalongs" on the top menu bar :)
Lovely scale to play. Been looking for something like this ever since finding John Butler since he uses a beautiful modern approach to celtic melodies. Thanks
Not only was this video super useful after I played a few chords I discovered the voice recorder on my phone has a glitch where I can loop chords and play lead! Double joy lol!
Generally the easiest way to solo is using the minor pentatonic shapes. If you search for them online then you'll want shape 1 to start from the root note to go with a minor key and shape 2 to start from the root note to go with a major key. For example to solo over a song/tune in A minor (dorian, aeolian or phrygian) take shape 1 and start from fret 5 on the bottom E string. For a song in C major (ionian, lydian or mixolydian), use shape 2 starting from fret 8. I hope that helps!
Hi Heath. I think I did it in this video because it's easier to move the index finger down one fret to make a minor chord than making the big stretch with the third finger. Whatever fingering you like the best is fine though!
Hello all! I've had a few messages asking for further DADGAD videos, so I've decided to make the subject of this week's Folky Fridays live stream using DADGAD in keys other than D major. You ask me any questions you have in real time and hopefully pick up some tips by tuning in here: ruclips.net/video/EbvCVZhnAxw/видео.html
@@jordantaylor1988 Wow, get on it, there are quite a few good ones! I've been meaning to have a look at some of the other popular ones... Watch this space!
Hello! If F# is your root note then A is a minor third (3 semitones) above it, meaning that when you play the two together you will hear a minor chord.
?? Why not just play the correct chords? Em ? F#m ? G? Not that hard in DADGAD, and you get a movable chord shape from them. Why not help guitarists be better guitarists, instead of lazy guitarists?
just a beginner but know the chords in standard tuning, I always loved the Celtic music!

What a fantastic video lesson. I’ve just started playing backing for my 13 year old daughter who has found a love for fiddle music. Subscribed😁
That's brilliant, best of luck with it and looking forward to seeing the family band videos in a year or two's time!

This is the only way of playing i relate to chords in basic form, heavily influenced by Luka Bloom.
Nice video. Great explanation of this! You saved me a lot of time.
Cheers Bob! There are quite a few more DADGAD videos on folkfriend.co.uk as well along with a book of easy tune arrangements for the tuning :)

Wow, that's super handy! Cheers for watching 😊
@@folkfriend I'll be watching a fair few of your videos from now on :) Quality!
Just by chance, has anyone used your DADGAD method using a Baritone ukulele tuned DGAD?
Nope but there's certainly no reason why you shouldn't! I bet that would sound great.
good, what key should I solo in that it sounds good? Mixolydian?
Generally the easiest way to solo is using the minor pentatonic shapes. If you search for them online then you'll want shape 1 to start from the root note to go with a minor key and shape 2 to start from the root note to go with a major key. For a song in C major (ionian, lydian or mixolydian), use shape 2 starting from fret 8. I hope that helps!
This is for standard tuning btw... Soloing in DADGAD is a lot less intuitive tbh!
Thanks for this.
For the major chords, why do you slide your index finger to the major 3rd instead of using your middle finger for that tone?
Hi Heath. I think I did it in this video because it's easier to move the index finger down one fret to make a minor chord than making the big stretch with the third finger. Whatever fingering you like the best is fine though!

Dadgad is pretty sweet
Can be! Certainly make it easy to get the folky sound :)
I’ve been playing for 30 years. This is the first alternate tuning I’ve tried. I’m late to the game 😂

I don't understand how in the F#m the A note on the second fret is a minor??
But thanks for the video!!
Hello! If F# is your root note then A is a minor third (3 semitones) above it, meaning that when you play the two together you will hear a minor chord.
After everything you have said about DADGAD! Good stuff though.
What have I said?! "most versatile tuning" I think it was no? :P
Tapadh leat.
Brother, your guitar is out of tune...😄 How can you not hear how far out of tune you are??
