Hey i took some geology in university and i can tell ya that you dont need a volcano to create hotsprings, you could simply have a section of thinner crust. This would result in no volcanic activity in the area but still allow for hotsprings given the right conditions of the aquifer. What is most notable is that they obviously have a large aquifer and also the perfect conditions with the cave networks in the north that allow for deep running aquifers. Combine the massive cave systems full of water (which we also see in bloodravens cave with the underwater river) and the thin crust and you get some hot springs

Has anybody thought about the way the crypts are filled? To me, and I may be wrong, but I would think that crypts would be filled starting at the top. Then you would continue digging as more space was needed. But not Winterfell's Crypts. They are filled from the bottom to top. This means there are only so many tombs available. It seems that as this story starts, they are only a few generations of tombs left to be filled. Does this hint that the line of the Starks will be ending soon?

silversailer , personally I just do not how much bigger the Winterfell Crypts could possibly be , it seems they were made to be as large as possible for the area. Its said to be larger than the whole of Winterfell itself , which the castle / its grounds according to book size and scale (forget about the show's portrayal of that) are huge. The crypts are massively large , big enough to hold 8000 generations of Starks , not just the Kings of Winter / Lords of Winterfell who got the statue treatment but their family members pretty much all got buried in the crypts as well , most of which aside from a very few exceptions without a statue. Ntm the collapsed part held the Stark dead for however long up until what seems to be the First Long Night. I think being of the size to hold Kings and Lords and their families for 8000 years or so with still a bit more room to go is adequately large. Space for such things is of course finite but given the size description in the books and the sheer amount of dead it holds it seems to be of absolutely enormous size. Most likely the oldest part could have been part of or an access point to the CotF tunnel structure or some type of alcove of theirs and the Starks likely built away from that point around it as large as they could go.

I appreciate these videos, but I am also an amateur geologist... And... GRRM is no moron. You cannot have hot springs (or hot naturally occurring waters) without geothermal (volcanic) activity. Winterfell is basically a fertile garden with warm waters, Weirwood roots, tunnels, deep sod, and glorious natural lands in the nearly-frozen tundra. Lots of secrets to be had.

The Winterfell Crypts are certainly a fascinating part of the narrative not only the size , scale and significance to the area but it seems destined for some type of epic magical contribution towards the endgame. So much allusion and foreshadowing via textual clues in and around the crypts that the Stark dead will rise in some form be it the spirits or statues themselves In fact it is very likely inside the collapsed portion of the crypts is visual proof of this rise happening once before during the First Long Night and Brandon the Breaker likely broke / collapsed that area to possibly start anew building the next crop of resurrection reinforcements for the next conflict with the Others and possibly the Starks / CotF who were likely allied in that conflict could have agreed to cover up the evidence , so only certain parties would be in the know and prevent subsequent generations from in some cases frivolously raising the Stark dead.
The catalyst for their rise is more likely than not the Horn of Winter , the suggestions it took down the Wall are not likely as it did not seem to take it down the first time around and waking giants from the earth could be referring to the spirits or statues rising. This horn does seem to be the one in Sam's possession which was also being sought after by Mance. The efficacy of blowing the HoW and exactly who will blow it is up for debate , will it be Jon or Mance or someone else and how effective the risen Starks spirits or their statues will be in this impending conflict is unclear , though it will be an epic event regardless. Brandon the Breaker seems to not only have broken / collapsed part of the crypts but likely also broke the HoW perhaps magically and physically (one or both) with potentially a missing physical piece needing to be found. To me I just do not see any other purpose for the Horn of Winter beyond raising the Stark dead. TWoW , is looking to be the book of horns , with the Meereen convergence and imminent battle over there it seems very likely the dragon-binder horn will be blown which I can not wait to see the results of doing so. But also the graphic associated with the TWoW looks to be a horn and it looks to be the Horn of Winter itself which suggests the HoW could also be blown in the same novel. Personally , i have a feeling we will get both horns blown in the book , with the Horn of Winter very likely being used towards the very end of the novel potentially so late in the book that it could be one of the last actions in it and left as a cliffhanger for us waiting for ADoS to see exactly what transpires from blowing it.

Could the crypts be old tunnels of the children's of the forest? That some reason was made tombs of starks?

  • @jsizemore1449

Tinfoil theory of mine Bran, Meera, and Hodor don't escape thru the tunnels but with the underground river and it flows under Winterfell and feeds the hot springs the trio comes up from the river thru the crypts where we find out why there 🔥 and any other secrets they might hold and their arrival coincides with the white walkers to WF the dead rise and Hodor dies after he pushes Meera and Bran out the crypts and replaces the the giant stone that they used in the Clash to hide trapping himself on the side with the Stark corpses.
I got the idea after Ellia caught the same blind white fish in the Stormlands as Meera had in the BR cave and i wonder if the underground river runs from BR cave under the wall to WF and then to Storms End three places Bran the Builder was said to have been hell maybe it forks toward Oldtown too

    • @msanders777

That's an interesting catch about the fish 😉 I don't think I've seen anyone else draw that parallel.

If the horn of winter was split into two parts it would make sense that anyone could blow it and raise the dead, and that is why the horn was split in two.
What if the horn is “reforged” and Sam, knowing that he will die, blows the horn and brings the stark army to life? Which is possibly under the leadership of Jon Snow.

Hi there! Long time fan - first time commenter. The Stark dead may be the absolute definition of “valar doharis.” It fits with the theme that all of the inhabitants of Planetos seem to be bred for a form of everlasting slavery. It will be interesting to see whether the statues have any will of their own. In Jon’s dream, he senses that the Kings of Winter stir in anger, which hints that the dead may be seeking vengeance for their servitude. Of course, we don’t know who, or what, is causing this stirring. Jon assumes that they are angry at him for being a supposed outsider, but I think we can easily see that Jon is misinterpreting his dream. We don’t have a lot of concrete information here, but I would love to see the statues try to “break the wheel” by rebelling against the Stark curse.

I think the Ice queen is in the collapsed section. 13th lord Commanders' wife. She was captured, put in there and then the tunnel was collapsed on purpose. Then the dead Starks are put there to guard her with their iron swords

Hi I don't know if you will see this as im watching later but if the statues I'm the crypts do fail to work could it be because the north didn't remeber and they don't have the correct swords on the new generations statues, going along with someone else's idea could the eldest statues sword have had dragon glass infused to them or do you think them being a diffrent made of iron(?) Is important? Great stream thanks as always 😊

I had a theory: Targaryen names more often than not, end in a "ys" making the "us" sound. Ancient Roman names tended to end in "us" as well. Perhaps the Targaryens and/or the Valyrians symbolize the ancient Romans in a way, the rise and fall of the Valyrians or the Targaryens mirroring the rise and fall of the Roman empire.

    • @Victor.-.E
