Happy April Fool's Day!! Found this one in the lost time capsule of travel videos I had never put out and thought it might be fun for a Way Back Wednesday & April Fools Day video. I am glad that I now make sure I know how to pronounce things and I actually know how to count to 5. Notice there are only 4 "hates" I hope you all get a chuckle out of this Historic travel time capsule.
For April Fool's you should do the "Five Love and Hates of Ottawa" and you should do it in Ottawa . .. Ottawa Illinois - just a short drive to the State Prison in Joliet, Not only do that have a Walmart that have a Walmart Superstore, over 14 people have died in the great Ottawa Illinois vicinity from skydiving as the area is a favorite landing spot of skydivers.
The biggest thing about Ottawa I would say is to go during an event. The best part about Ottawa is that the city is great for everyday life for the locals, but as a result there isn't the constant hustle and bustle of Montreal or Toronto. The financial district shuts down at night so make sure to go when there's something to do and not just a random time of the year - and even get out to the Glebe, Little Italy or Chinatown they have great food and shops
I'm an outsider, and I find Ottawa very boring (even the fun stuff becomes repetitively boring), lonely (anti-social, not welcoming that much), too cold for too long, too governmental, etc.. At the sametime, I am thankful to God for being accepted, cared, and sheltered for here, due to the economic crisis, war, joblessness, very high prices, lack of insurance over somethings, etc. back home that my parents had to endure. My brother got arrested for defending himself against a bunch of thieves with knives in the Ottawa city area. The cops allowed the thieves to escape and accused my brother of the crimes, even though there was evidence that he was stabbed three or more times. The justice system here sucks. The police correctional jail place in Innes is much worse than the one's in America. They treat the criminals and parents of the victims with abuse verbally, physically, etc. in many ways. Harrasment, rudeness, etc. At the court, the Crown attorney only cares about the public and gives cares little about the falsely accused criminal. He even ignored the past crime scene and defended the thieves. He was against my brother ans mother and myself. The lawyer(s) only care about money, they don't care about if you get out or not. That just goes to show you how corrupt the criminal justice system is in Ottawa.
We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open. Thanks for sharing!!!!!
lol, “Ottawa is a ghost town with tourists” is how we locals feel all the time. no night life, all government workers coming in and out of the suburbs.
I was born, raised and live in Ottawa. so yeah if your going to ottawa for vacation uhhh i hope your a fan of museums cuz nothing much else to do here. The Byward market is fun along with Lansdown but other than that it doesnt have the snazz of Toronto although the Canal and the rideau falls are amazing for photography.
You can rent bicycles and see both Ottawa and Gatineau. There are miles and miles of bicycle paths. Now they even have the little electric scooters you can rent. FUN! Kayaking, canoing and shooting the rapids on the Ottawa River. Don''t forget that! AND THE food. Yummy, especially the French food.
Love these videos . The negatives are interesting- nightlife- fair enough before COVID, you needed to know where to go, it’s exist but doesn’t jump out at you like Toronto or Montreal. In comparison to Toronto, Ottawa is very clean downtown, and improving. It is a government town, can’t disagree, but doesn’t mean it’s expensive - don’t go to tourist traps (Byward Market) and you’ll find the prices drop fast and quality is good. Ottawa has extreme cold (-40 Celsius at worst in winter) and extreme heat (40 at worst in summer). So dress warm in winter, but pack light for summer. The Rideau Canal is worlds largest skating rink and very fun to skate into the downtown of a capital city. Ottawa’s proximity to nature is probably underrated, yes Gatineau Park is very close but lots of great hiking only about an hour away from downtown on the Ontario side a well. We like to think we are friendly too :)
Been there a few times. Byward is very busy and lots of activity in the summer. Lots of choices of food and patios to grab a beer. Lots of walking trails and mix of city and nature a great balance. Not overwhelming like the large cities. People always seemed very friendly/happy and seemed family friendly. Prefer Ottawa and Kingston over Montreal and Toronto.
Ottawa is my second hometown, but on the French side of the river..lots of nightlife!! 😉 but don't miss Chinatown and/or Little Italy! Ottawa situated on the Ottawa River, it still takes my breath away! Take a ride across the Champlain Bridge 👍

I live in Montreal and I like Ottawa! I'm not a 30 yr old so I could care less about the nightlife. Also, I never found Byward Market to be a sketchy area.
Downtown Ottawa was somewhat unkempt for a number of years because of the subway construction. It opened in September 2019. Now, if we could just move past covid, so the city can fully revive.
Byward market is pretty happening at night. The only reason it feels sketchy or run down is because the homeless shelters are right down town in the tourist areas. So alot of homeless people.
My hometown. Glad you got a chance to visit. Most people from the US just pass by on the 401 between Montreal and Toronto. As for the parking, we got a new metro system in 2019, so don't drive.
Haha! I’ve been working in Ottawa’s nightlife for 15 years. We have an amazing underground... you just have to look for it. It’s not for the tourists so if you don’t know someone here, you won’t find the graffiti, the film festivals, the concerts, the really weird stuff like drag shows, pop up dinner parties in weird locations, the rap battles, etc... Forget winter in Ottawa though. I travel in the winter 😅
Very familiar with this city. I can't visualize large parts of its layout in my head, like with some cities, but my mom grew up there, I have a lot of family on my mother's side still there, and my sister went to university there, so I've been there a lot. This is a good summary. I especially agree about the winters, which are notoriously brutal. It's simultaneously cold, even by Canadian standards, snowy, and there's always a risk of freezing rain. There are nice byproducts of these winters, such as the Canal, but you MUST check the weather forecast in Ottawa all the time, especially if you plan on driving. Bus transportation in Ottawa is not bad, but there is little light rail and no subway, so you may need to drive depending on your circumstances. Despite that, I love Ottawa. Its museums are excellent, as you pointed out, it has a gorgeous downtown with beautifully preserved 19th century gothic architecture, it's safe, and it's actually not as boring as people think. Your mentioning of its natural parts, I should also include its integration into the Trans-Canada Trail system, is also a real plus. *Just as a side note, it's generally pronounced "By-ward Market" not "Bay-ward Market." Though I saw a comment where you now know. I know this was a throwback. No biggie. :)
I live in Montreal and tourist to Ottawa a couple times per year for work and friends-visiting. This video is pretty accurate (it's named Byward market Mark! After a Colonel By! Ahhh!), though night life has gotten a lot better in the last ten years. Gatineau is really where people stay up late and hang out, is the thing you maybe didn't emphasize. Hang out at a house party if you can; locals used to say that the best thing about Ottawa is the Friday train to Montreal, but that's a bit over-stated now.
That's relatable. I'm also from Montreal and I used to study at the University of Ottawa. I was, and remain, of the view that Ottawa is the superior city from Monday to Thursday, whereas Montreal has Ottawa beat during the weekend. Ottawa is the better place to work or study, whereas Montreal is where you get your fun, your culture and your parties.
@@woltersworld Oh, silly Wolters World Mark. Stop by Montreal again and we will feed you and make your face make strange noises correctly, when the party at our borders is again ready to accept USonians.
I think you captured Ottawa’s school field trip vibes well- you’re going to learn something and have a pleasant (probably not exciting) time. 😊 Ottawa Valley is gorgeous in the autumn too.
Visited for a day as part of a college tour in 1987. Sadly our profs didn't realize the day was Canadian Thanksgiving and it was rainy, so much of an our day there was at an indoor mall. I hope to get back someday.amd actually see the place. Quebec City.was awesome though as was Montreal.
I visited Ottawa, but needed to leave after two days as there just didnt feel like anything left. I am a native Ottawan. You missed a lot. War Museum, Museum of Nature, History museum, Rideau Hall, Laurier House, Science and Tech Museum, Royal Canadian Mint, Aviation Museum, Gatineau Park, Diefenbunker, summer festivals (music, ethnic and others), Canada Day, fireworks festival in August, Parliament evening light show, river and canal cruises, many others
Ottawa resident here. This video is slightly outdated and contains several inaccuracies.....for instance, it’s Byward Market, not Bayward.....nonetheless, nice to see Mark standing in front of my workplace (Parliament)...
You missed talking about the Ottawa Valley. I've been here almost 40 years. There are a lot of hidden surprises and hidden treasures. Of course most of those are not in view of those who are just passing through.
LOL. If anyone comes to Ottawa, definitely ask a local. We can give you all the details of where to eat, night life and other things to do that aren't necessarily listed in any tourism brochure lol. Great vid! Any other Ottawa peeps watch this? 😆
I'm a little surprised to hear that Ottawa may seem unsafe and rundown. I've lived throughout Canada, and Ottawa is generally a fairly well-kept, beautiful city. Agreed, it can come off as dull and you need to look a little harder sometimes for excitement. Also, it's the Byward Market, not Baawyward.
I am from Ottawa... I keep hearing you say "Bayward market" It is "By ward" and yah it is so dead hear at night lol... Go to Montréal for a great night life... 2 hours away worth the drive. :D
Yes. There are seedy sections in Ottawa, and parking can be a nightmare. Definitely take the tour of Parliament Hill, and the War Memorial. Sample some local cuisine. Especially Poutine!
Pretty fair, nightlife maybe underrated, with two large universities and multiple colleges it can make a decent scene on weekends in the market during the school year as a young person.
My dad grew up right next to Ottawa. He said that it's not great to visit, but it's not a bad place to live. Then again he moved to the UK, which is where I'm in. So who knows?
Always funny when I hear tourists talking about Ottawa. I think most of the comments are spot on. I live in Ottawa and it is a rather boring city for night life. Don't come in Winter as it is bloody cold. Skating on the Rideau Canal isn't fun when the temperature is -20 Celsius in the open with the awful wind. Hotel is expensive for sure. If I were a tourist, I would spend my money in Calgary, Vancouver ... much nicer places.
Hi Mark! I'm from Ottawa, and there are things I could add or help understand better :) too many to write it (yes I'm a bit lazy right now) but if you would like a "local" to help as a consultant for anything and everything Ottawa, before your next Ottawa video, get in touch, I would be happy to help! Thanks for vids and for giving Canada some love! :)
It's not a kinda of a cool place It is a cool place . It's called ' the BY- WARD market Not the bay ward market Ottawa is not run down It's a beautiful and clean City
Great video, and very accurate, however, as a local, it is not the "bayward" market, it is the byward market, as Ottawa was originally Bytown. The best parts of the city are on the outskirts, along the river lengths.
Best things: biking; kayaking on the Rideau River or Lac Phillip in Gatineau park; cross-country skiing in the winter; live music at the Rainbow, Live on Elgin, Irene’s, or the Black Sheep in nearby Wakefield; restaurants in the ByWard market, Little Italy, Wellington West or Hull; Jazz festival, Bluesfest, and Folkfest; Film festivals, especially with the Canadian Film Institute, the National Art Gallery, day trips to Perth, Almonte, Westport, Merrickville, Aylmer; walking tours, especially the People’s history walking tours and Indigenous Walks tours; the Fringe festival and local theatre, especially at the GCTC and the National Arts Centre. Worst things: conservative/closed mindedness, reserved people, prices, public transit, lacks joie de vivre.
I grew up in Ottawa, Ottawa used to have good bars, clubs and just over the river in Quebec, not anymore. Ottawa is boring man, not too hot, it gets humid as hell.
As an 3 years resident of Ottawa I would like to say that : roads quality are one of the worst I've ever seen in my life! When driving my Audi I feel that I drive the old poor quality car somewhere in off roads mountains. Will stay extra few years but no more.
Hi! I like your videos. May I correct something in the description of this one? Ottawa is a city located in Ontario. On the other side of the river is another city located in Quebec, called Gatineau. They sure are neighbor cities but should not be considered the same culturally, politically, etc. Regards, JRB
I like going to the sugar shacks in the nearby countryside for maple syrup season. A sugar shack is family friendly (it's not like the bunny ranches of Nevada). It where maple sap is boiled down to syrup in the spring. March break time. Given an opportunity to do spring break in Daytona or Ottawa, clearly go to Daytona but the sugar shacks are interesting to see once. An Ottawa native.
The worst part about going to Ottawa: it's Ottawa. The best part about going to Ottawa: dear god do you know that nothing in supposed to survive the barren tundra, and look - it's a miracle - the lights are on, you can take public transit and see the capital of the most respected nation on earth who takes in people from all over the world and tries to show an example of how to become better and more decent for the rest of the world to see and my god, the lights are still on and you can go to a store and buy oranges in middle of January.
Uh. A lot of the down town core clears up in the evening because most of the employees live in the suburbs or small towns outside of the core. Not because they’re from other cities or provinces. Ottawa is geographically huge.

@@spaceman081447 honestly Montreal is the most bilingual city and you could technically only speak English and live there and be fine. The Byward market is not sketchy aside from the homeless shelter where people sell drugs out in the open. Only Rideau Street is sketchy at night at this one particular McDonald's which always has problems. There is a video of a massive brawl that took place there in front of the cashiers and a dude pulls out a baby racoon mid-video. There's been many times where I've been trapped on Rideau street because the buses only kick back in around 5AM. Don't talk to anyone and don't try and bum a cigarette and you should be fine. Other than that, there are a few night clubs in the downtown area, bars and restaurants, and a strip club if one were so inclined. If that gets boring, you can always try and find a night club or two directly across the bridge to Hull, Gatineau.
Reserve it as far in advance as possible. Right now I have reservations for all my vacation throughout the year and when I check rates now they are almost double

Ottawa, where we roll up the carpets at 8 pm! Great vintage Wolters find!
For real 🤣 my God its boring
I love your videos. Thanks for making them. Good info.
LOL. If anyone comes to Ottawa, definitely ask a local. We can give you all the details of where to eat, night life and other things to do that aren't necessarily listed in any tourism brochure lol.
Great vid!
Any other Ottawa peeps watch this? 😆
yes i'm from ottawa!!!
I'm moving to Ottawa in the next two months. Do you live in Ottawa? Can you provide me with some basic info? thanks
Thanks for your beautiful video.... ⚘👌🙏
The video is from 2014 :)
@@woltersworld Oh, I know
Stay away from Vanier
I am from Ottawa... I keep hearing you say "Bayward market" It is "By ward" and yah it is so dead hear at night lol... Go to Montréal for a great night life... 2 hours away worth the drive. :D
He's there with his wife and kids...you going to trust him to report accurately on nightlife?
It's not "Bayward Market" - it's "Byward" after Colonel By.
Sorry, it is the Rideau canal, or the curtain canal, named after the river that is named after the falls that exit just beside the French embassy
Yes. There are seedy sections in Ottawa, and parking can be a nightmare.
Definitely take the tour of Parliament Hill, and the War Memorial. Sample some local cuisine. Especially Poutine!
The pandemic has really turned the city in a shitty place. Ngl
Finally a USEFUL video 👌
Pretty fair, nightlife maybe underrated, with two large universities and multiple colleges it can make a decent scene on weekends in the market during the school year as a young person.
The first building shown when mentioning museums is Canada's Supreme Court building.
I noticed that....and where the H is the Bayward Market?
The second building which is shown is a convention centre 😂
Boring.
😂
His mispronounced words are bad in this vid
Who also here because it is it own city
Sadly i was born there
My dad grew up right next to Ottawa. He said that it's not great to visit, but it's not a bad place to live. Then again he moved to the UK, which is where I'm in. So who knows?
"Ottawa. The city that fun forgot"
yeah ottawa is really fun :)
Exactly 😂
3:08...the plate everyone's mom or grandmother had.
Wished I had watched before I moved here lol
Bye ward market, named after colonel John Bye, ingeneer of the Rideau canal.
"Ontario" and "Night life" are mutually exclusive. Ontario student come to Québec during spring break.
Been here for over an year! I like NOTHING about this city. Getting the hell out.
It's not a kinda of a cool place
It is a cool place
.
It's called ' the BY- WARD market
Not the bay ward market
Ottawa is not run down
It's a beautiful and clean
City
Great video, and very accurate, however, as a local, it is not the "bayward" market, it is the byward market, as Ottawa was originally Bytown. The best parts of the city are on the outskirts, along the river lengths.
I have to wonder if he bothered to read up on it’s history before coming
Ottawa was actually always originally Odawa by the Algonquin indigenous peoples. "Bytown" is the colonizer name.
thank you sir
Ottawa is boring and the market is sketchy!
Byward market not Bayward and Rideau canal (Re-doe) and should have been here in the 90’s, the downtown core in the Market was booming!
That was when I was hitting the clubs in the market. Fun times
Its quite dull out here not gonna lie
Canada is my home country. :)
I lived in Ottawa most of my life and planning my exodus in the near future.
As an 3 years resident of Ottawa I would like to say that : roads quality are one of the worst I've ever seen in my life! When driving my Audi I feel that I drive the old poor quality car somewhere in off roads mountains. Will stay extra few years but no more.
Do you think it can get very cold in middle of December? I am planning to go and I am little bit concerned about weather...
The best part about Ottawa is leaving it to come to Montreal! If you want to have a good time, this is the place.
Montreal and Toronto are the best place
Montreal blows
I love when he said "I mean its way safer than the u.s. capital" as a Canadian American I feel very conflicted on how to feel about this lol
But as an American-Canadian, I have to agree lol
Hi! I like your videos.
May I correct something in the description of this one? Ottawa is a city located in Ontario. On the other side of the river is another city located in Quebec, called Gatineau. They sure are neighbor cities but should not be considered the same culturally, politically, etc.
Regards,
JRB
I have not lived in Ottawa for 51 years but then the city across the river in Quebec was called HULL
Ottawa night life it probably not as crazy as mtl or Toronto but are night life is great
Uh. A lot of the down town core clears up in the evening because most of the employees live in the suburbs or small towns outside of the core. Not because they’re from other cities or provinces. Ottawa is geographically huge.
The Byward market seems sketchy? What?
This felt very dated! The city has evolved immensely in the last few years.
Its still just as boring.
@@philippe88 😂100%
Popped my cherry in 07. Thank you Ottawa!
I am Canadian have lived in Canada all my life im a 6 hour drive from Ottawa... great city but the best city in Canada is Montreal hands down.
Montreal is the best!
@@philippe88 True...Montreal is the best for the worst roads in all of Canada according to a CAA study - hands down!! Hahaha
@Justine Hietkamp
RE: ". . . but the best city in Canada is Montreal hands down."
But Montreal is in Quebec. What if you don't speak French?
@@spaceman081447 My french is awful lol... Last time i took french was is grade 9 which was in 04 lol...I speak 100% english while i am there and am 100% fine. You really just need to know your basic hello, good bye, and thank you
@@spaceman081447 honestly Montreal is the most bilingual city and you could technically only speak English and live there and be fine. Though learning some basic French is a good idea but a formality / polite thing to do. I usualy go every other month to see family and friends and although French is my first language, I have friends from there who speak English when we are out and it's fine.
Last call being at 2am sucks
Ottawa is good for visiting, don't live here, food sucks and people are not nice....
@@dennislewis4472 I used to say the same thing about Ottawa, then I moved to Montreal and it was much worse. Came back to Ottawa and everything seemed friendlier and more civilized
The most boring city i ever lived.
What up Mr.World ,when is the next Vegas trip? That was the first video that turned me on to your channel a few years back.
We were just there in February. Have 4 or 5 new las vegas videos. Just go to our channel page and look at recent uploads. They should be there
@@woltersworld yes already watched them all. Just wondering if you was hitting up again this summer it should be back in full swing
wolters can u do a video on renting a car... does the price ever go down for example or should you buy as far out as possible
Reserve it as far in advance as possible. Right now I have reservations for all my vacation throughout the year and when I check rates now they are almost double
Biward as in 'bye-ward' not 'Bayward'. Also, Rideau is pronounced 'Ree-doh'.
Great feedback and clear points of your personal view! :) You have ti come in Venice and give me help to develop informations for Venice... No no Mr Giant, Venice in italy...and we’ll talk about food. Ciao
We've had 2 trios to venetian canceled 2 years in a row. I will be teaching in Vicenza next year so I will be in your area
A more stimulating thing could be to create your own tour of Venice and a Venetian (me) who takes you by boat in search of a hidden Venice and the lagoon. Ready to ride a venetian boat?
What do you expect,?????? We love our Ottawa and I don't need a Yankee to remind me that it's a great city.
Defensive much?
