I wasn’t born when this song came out but have heard it on radio stations. Every time I hear it I picture myself living back then when it first came out
If you watch any of the other Christopher Cross videos featuring "Sailing," you will appreciate how consistent and true he is to this song. He never sways from its beauty. He's a true music genius.
Just learned now that my younger brother who has autism loves this song, I played this video, and asked him to sing along w/ it and although he's shy sometimes, he sang it in front of me! I silently choked up inside and wanted to cry.. there is something about this song that touches his heart and soul.. it's a timeless classic. ❤️
I love how he looks like a high school football player, then he starts singing this delicate, nuanced song... it's kind of magical how that first impression just dissolves.
People definitely criticize his look but I have to say... Well, it's not far down to paradise, at least it's not for me And if the wind is right you can sail away and find tranquility Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see. Believe me. It's not far to never-never land, no reason to pretend And if the wind is right you can find the joy of innocence again Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see. Believe me. Sailing takes me away to where I've always heard it could be Just a dream and the wind to carry me And soon I will be free Fantasy, it gets the best of me When I'm sailing All caught up in the reverie, every word is a symphony Won't you believe me? Sailing takes me away to where I've always heard it could be Just a dream and the wind to carry me And soon I will be free Well it's not far back to sanity, at least it's not for me And if the wind is right you can sail away and find serenity Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see. Believe me. Sailing takes me away to where I've always heard it could be Just a dream and the wind to carry me And soon I will be free
"In February 1981, soft rock staple Christopher Cross found himself up for six Grammys, including the so-called “big four”: album (for his self-titled LP), song and record of the year (for “Sailing”), as well as new artist. His competition, especially in the album of the year category, was stiff and included Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, and Pink Floyd’s masterwork “The Wall.” And yet, against all odds, the 29-year-old Texan took up a permanent position at the podium, collecting all four of the top Grammys, and a fifth one for arrangement." -Variety
My younger brother dying brought me here. His name was also Christopher Cross . 😭😭😭😭😭😭33 years old Cancer. Today is 11 year anniversary. I miss him soooooooo much😭😭😭😭😭😭
He's a Texan, He was in his 20's, The Oilers were arguably the best team in the league with the best player he was repping, he was on cloud 9 because he made it. It's really not that hard to fathom why he reached for that jersey in jest and exhilaration.
Flying down the highway in my first car, in 1980 with no seat belt on, Windows wide open, I just turned 19. This song came on, I started to Thank God, for what was in my future. I want to Thank God for keeping me these 42 years and letting me have a future.
When this beautiful song came out in 1980, i was 19. Today i am 58. Luckily life turned out good for me. Still, when i am alone, i go back to this song and i am back in heaven.
In 1980 I was 19. I joined the military and I remember listening to Sailing in basic training as we were polishing our boots. Every time I hear this song now it brings back great memories of friends made at basic training.
You guys were all in your late teens when “Ordinary People” came out (Best Picture 1980). I turned 19 in 1999 and that movie had a big impact on me. Some works of art, like this song, transcend time.

The single most nostalgic song from my childhood. I somehow remember my Mom singing this song to me when I was very young. Always will have a soft spot for this song.
I remember when he won...I believe it was BEST SONG OF THE YEAR.. I can't remember the year... but, I remember jumping up and down... like I won the lottery... I was so happy for him... I was so in love with this song...

Still listening in 2022? This was one of the first complete albums my Mom played...I liked it so much I borrowed it and must've listened to it 20 more times before I gave it back. She had such a wide, varied collection- this was the 80s you understand; her collection was mostly 60s - 80s, but with some classical stuff thrown in for good measure. To date this is one of my favorite albums from the 70s...when you listen to something that has the ability to transport you somewhere else...well, does it get much better than that? Like a really good book, this album stands the test of time.
This is a song that does always brings relaxation and peace in my soul.....O how I love it.....thank you Christopher.....I am a big fan of you and your music.
This song tortured my mind until I found it. Im 15, but years ago I heard the word sailing in flushed away, and the voice just immediately made me fall in love. I had no idea that one second could affect my soul in such ways.
I was on a shrimpboat for five years with Captain of my heart. He passed away in 2012. Not a day goes by that I dont miss being in the middle of the ocean for two months at a time with an exciting destination up ahead. Nothing but the sea, the sun, the moon, the stars, the milkyway, the fishing, and the peace. Who could ask for more?
December 2028 - Not just watching and listening, but appreciating this man's talents and quality writing more than ever, just like I did waaay back in Dec 2019.
I went sailing a long time ago with a family in Northern California, the Buckinghams. I think I only met them once or twice but it was the time of my life as a young boy. This song is dedicated to you guys. Thanks so much for that day. :)
I TRAMPLED MY BRAIN trying to find the name of this song. All I kept googling was "take me way no no no no". Nothing would come up. I finally wrote "feelings take me away no no no no" and this came up as one of my choices. You have NO idea how accomplished I feel right now.

I thought he was a beautiful person with the most BEAUTIFUL voice. I met my soulmate and we fell in love listening to his first album and married 40 years ago. Thank you, Christopher, whoever you are. All your music was fabulous and so is your soul. ❤
My boyfriend was a sailor and loved this song. I play this in remembrance. He had a severe stroke in 2017 and doesn't live with me as I couldn't take care of him. But.....he loved this song...
Great Memories From The Summer Of 1980. The late 70s and early 80s were the greatest era for music. It was a sure bet if you turn on your radio you were always guaranteed to hear good music. Now I won't even go near a radio.
This beautiful song brings we such sweet sorrow. I experienced for the first time the death of a classmate in 7th grade from a terrible accident. This was his favorite song and so fitting to play at his funeral as it was beautiful. From time to time I remember back to that young boy and the full life he did not have the opportunity to lead. I try to cherish my life and my loved ones.
One word: TALENT! This is without a doubt the best way to describe how talent feels and sounds. Even though English is my second language, just by listening to his voice and the instruments with such unparalleled harmony and passion you can feel music the way it was supposed to be enjoyed regardless of the language barriers.
My soulmate of 40 years and I fell in love listening over and over to his first album. He's a gentle man with a BEAUTIFUL voice and a FABULOUS soul. Thank you, Christopher, wherever you are. We loved you and your music and still do. 😃
Love this song. It takes me back to the great times on our boat. Beautiful Michigan lake, fresh air, and no cares, out on the water. Just the music filling the air. Now he’s gone but we had 34 years together. I can close my eyes and still be there. Memories are a gift. Love you J ❤️ Hug your loved ones.
You're really presumptuous to assume all music is like that when you have to search for what sounds good and if they use autotune so what if people like it let then it's not hurting you and it's not like you're actively searching for modern hits
Doug Elick there were still pretty faces with next to no talent making it in the industry back then, maybe minus the auto tune, now it’s just more mainstream,. don’t be delusional
l love this music it reminds me of times were life was prure when people respected one another when people were happy a time when you loved life and what it had to offer I feel so blessed to have grown up in those days our generation knows what I'm talking about
Rebecca Thornton Agreed. First time I heard this song was on the 17th Floor of Watterson Towers, I was 18 First Semester in College, with a 26 year college roommate (Partied to much lol, to him a few extra years). I thought it was crazy to stay that long, “Stupid Me”. First Coed Floor, 12 hot straight from high school Rich family girls and 12 common guys. Booze permitted with at least 1 person. in room 21, no smoke alarms and my roommate showed me a thing call a “joint” lmao. He play that record and look out over the Campus by the huge window. I loved that song first time he played on Record player. The Ladies finally after having to follow the nerd rules got to experience life to that song. Sweet memory I had forgotten.
Brilliant song and it brings back memories when I used to go to a pub in Liverpool called the Hanover and this song was played all the time on the juke box and that's how I became a big fan of Christopher Cross he's just brilliant and this song is one of the best of all time.
Brings me back to where I need to be. Thanks so much for posting this song. Sometimes we are in control of our destinies, sometimes we just need to let go, ride it out and know we will be ok.... if the wind is right.
I was born in 1997 and I gotta say the music of before, specially this guy is so much better than the music of today, those were the days of good music, Metallica, Chris Cross, Air Supply, Elton John, Michael Bolton, those and many more, were and still are good music!!!
Franklin Taylor I didnt mean he was badly dressed.Just that rock and pop stars did things more down to earth and casual back then. Not like all the junk that Justin Beiber and Lady GAGA do and wear that kind of takes away from the music(if you even call the unmelodous stuff they put out music today)
that's amazing. he's sporting a genuine, 100% nylon, made in the usa, silk-screened, powder blue sand knit jersey of the legendary earl campbell! i've been looking for that damn jersey for many moons! good song too. and he's a texan like all my family in my tribe's home state!
As a Briton, I would like to say that he's one of the great US icons of my childhood-the ones that showed us that we were on the right side in the Cold War, and that we would win it regardless because we had Chris and his friends, and the goodness of the US that gave us hope in those dark times. God knows what happened since then, but at least we still have Chris et al and the memories of the happiness during those troubled days.
Adam Welton no one could have wrote it better, man. i'm sure plenty people in the u.s. feel the same way about the beatles and bee gees being from the UK and all. the goodness of the u.s. is more rare now than ever before. i hate to say it that way but i've been around in this country long enough to know that are greatest days are behind us. i wish it didn't have to be that way but that logic does explain why so many people are desperate for the old america to return and are willing to vote for Trump for that cherished U.S. past.
This song is PURE MAGIC!!!!! Well deserving of every Grammy award it won. This IS the definition of a TIMELESS CLASSIC. Possibly the greatest song ever, at least on my list. 1980 was the best year!!!! Thank u Christopher Cross for creating 4 minutes of pure magic.
Remember listening to this song when I was 11. I lived on lake Washington Blvd in Seattle, Wa. Where ironically I enjoyed watching a lot of sailboats passing time during the long summer vacations with my sister 😊
Karmen Hughes I lived on lake Washington Blvd too when I was younger, except I was in Kirkland side of Lake washington. I don't know if we're similar in age or not I just turned 40. Time sure does fly it almost brings tears to my eyes.
40 years ago this month this song was at #1 for one week. Say what you want but this song is timeless for those of us who grew up back then.
Agreed!
One of my favorite songs. I can almost see myself on the boat as a child listening to this song.
He has a beautiful voice and the lyrics and.musiic are tied together for a great song !
I remember it well sailing Peconic Bay in my Morgan 30
I wasn’t born when this song came out but have heard it on radio stations. Every time I hear it I picture myself living back then when it first came out
I could listen to this song over and over and it never gets old.

God, Chris Cross in an Earl Campbell jersey singing Sailing. Best video ever
I love the jersey. Real human singing a song honoring a real human being that played real football.
that jersey brings back memories of the great Earl Cambell running over my beloved Cleveland Browns defensive line.
Hell yeah he's a texas boy san antonio to be exact
I love his look. He looks like a guy who would fix your fridge or help you jump start your car. Greatness
Or get you to sail!
Or the guy who is always told by a restaurant, "sorry we're out of broccoli and cheese. Tuna hasn't been delivered and milkshake machine is down"

Love you J ❤️
Hug your loved ones.
Back in the day when an artist had to be just that, not just a pretty face with Autotune to fix it all.
And that's why the judge on x-factor, AGT and other singing competition gets burned on for using auto tune
You're really presumptuous to assume all music is like that when you have to search for what sounds good and if they use autotune so what if people like it let then it's not hurting you and it's not like you're actively searching for modern hits
O m g
Doug Elick there were still pretty faces with next to no talent making it in the industry back then, maybe minus the auto tune, now it’s just more mainstream,. don’t be delusional
@@TheCitycat1000 Name a few of them....
One of those people that the voice isn't what you expect. Great relaxing song, Takes me back years. Thanks
Great song, seriously. Very imaginative. It takes you on a journey within your mind.
I have fond memories of this song; great album!
Quality music that is no longer a standard of today.
l love this music it reminds me of times were life was prure when people respected one another when people were happy a time when you loved life and what it had to offer I feel so blessed to have grown up in those days our generation knows what I'm talking about
+Holding Stephen Currys “Big N' Tasy” Nutsack Thank you
Yes we do Rebecca, Sailing , takes me away!
Sweet memory I had forgotten.
yep. i was in HS. i listen to old music from the 70's and 80's, back when people were so happy regardless to who was president.
Who is John Galt? @@cameron_fairchild
50's,60's,70's & 80's gave us such wonderfully talented people.
Then tech came in the 90's and the world became a harsher, colder place.
Brilliant song and it brings back memories when I used to go to a pub in Liverpool called the Hanover and this song was played all the time on the juke box and that's how I became a big fan of Christopher Cross he's just brilliant and this song is one of the best of all time.
Still on my mind to get me here 2019 💚❤️💙 who's with me?
it is 2020 1 MAY 2020 , I am still listening
I'm with you now 2021
Brings me back to where I need to be. Thanks so much for posting this song. Sometimes we are in control of our destinies, sometimes we just need to let go, ride it out and know we will be ok.... if the wind is right.
It takes me back to when I was growing into adult!
angela mullis Me too
Thanks for your continuous love and support Lisa Meier ❤️❤️
How long have you been a fan of mine Lisa Meier???
Magical song...Takes me on a journy still to this day!
Thanks for some cherished memories Chris Cross. My mom really loved this song 😓
An amazing song will love it forever :-)
Alicia13202 pretty good if i say...
Alicia13202 So true, it still resonates in 2015.
Alicia13202 Yep, a classic.
yass girl especially this version
Alicia13202 Well said Alicia.....a GREAT song. Beautiful lyrics, an ethereal quality, Regards Michael
Oh my God, the memories! I was three but i can remember singing this song every time it came on. Luv this and Ride like the wind.
Let's put this absolute wicked tune back into the charts 2019! :)
I remember listening to this song as a young boy , now I'm an old man! Seems like yesterday.
I was born in 1997 and I gotta say the music of before, specially this guy is so much better than the music of today, those were the days of good music, Metallica, Chris Cross, Air Supply, Elton John, Michael Bolton, those and many more, were and still are good music!!!
Ashen throw some billy Joel in there trust me
OMG 🎼 flash backs from the 1970 - 80's
Back when the music was more important than image
Indeed!
For sure.. I have seen people dressed better to feed livestock.. LOL am glad they focused on music more than appearances
MrJacMac1986 I hear ya. I don't mean to berate his clothes either.
MrJacMac1986 couldn't agree more!
that's amazing. he's sporting a genuine, 100% nylon, made in the usa, silk-screened, powder blue sand knit jersey of the legendary earl campbell! i've been looking for that damn jersey for many moons! good song too. and he's a texan like all my family in my tribe's home state!
It's 2019, I'm 22 year's old and even though this song came out 17 years before I was born, I still it. Gets me emotional 😭
"Sailing" is the greatest soft rock song of all time!!!
I love the song, but I wouldn’t go that far! 😂🤣😂
you must be gifted to even imagine this melody
Absolutely!
