Mono vs. Braid - Which Fishing Line is BEST for Catfishing?

  • There are different schools of thought on which fishing line is best for catching catfish. In my personal experience, I do best with monofilament fishing line. There are pros and cons to using both braided and monofilament line. I hope you try both and see the benefit of using each of them. Thanks for watching!
    Pros for Braid:
    1. Smaller line diameter
    2. Longevity
    3. Sensitivity
    Cons for Braid:
    1. Not very abrasion resistant
    2. Expensive
    3. Can be difficult to spool
    Pros for Mono:
    1. Abrasion resistant
    2. It's cheap
    3. It stretches
    Cons for Mono:
    1. Larger line diameter
    2. Memory/Can't cast as far
    3. It stretches...but I also consider it a pro...it's like a double-edged sword

    I use a line called power pro its a braided mono it works really good when fighting big fish ,you still get the stretch of mono and u also get the strength of braid .

    My nearest lake has many small rocks. I like bottom fishing and I use a Carolina rig for that. I used braided line and it snapped when I retrieved the line. With mono I have no problem. The abrasion resistance of mono is better than braid.

    Great info. I use that 20lb big game that you have because I catfish, bassfish, surf fish etc with a lot of the same gear. Never hook anything big enough to worry about break offs besides the occasional gar.

    In my experience, powerpro braid handles abrasions best since it’s so much more coarse than the smoother casting braids. I use it in 40-65lb and haven’t had hardly any issues with structure 👍🏼

    Im with you on this. I used Mono to catch my first Wels Catfish few weeks ago (Riba Roja Dam, River Ebro, Spain) 55kg (121lb) 1 hour 26 minutes from hooking to in the Boat. Over rocks, against the dam wall, along the bottom, under sunken trees etc. I honestly think braid would have abraded though and I'd lost it. I use braid for many tasks, Pike, Zander (Walleye your side of the pond) etc, but not for Catfish in rough, tough condions. Subscribed :-)

    Thank you so much for being objective. I tend to fish on banks and I honestly hate monofilament. But, I think I'm going to use monofilament as a leader, now, just for the abrasion resistance. I do occasionally fish around dams and structures, so I think I may give mono a try in those areas and see if that changes my mind a bit.

    I use 65lb braid and a 50lb mono leader and it works really well. If fishing heavy cover I'll usually go with a longer mono leader unless I'm using live bait then I'll shorten the leader to help keep the bait from swimming into snags. When fishing the MO and KS river I feel the lack of streatch in braid helps get that hook set on big fish a little better then mono.

    most people here in AZ use braid with mono long leader. 140 lb. power pro braid. but state record had cable leader. 76 lbs. flathead

  • @austin72
    @austin72 6 лет назад +1

    Also like u said a flat head for sensitivity I use a unpegged floater so if it’s running to the right or my way the floater is my sensitivity so to me there’s no need for braid

    One reason for the mono backing is cause braid wont grip the spool very well, Some of the newer reels/more expensive reels we use for the surf have cross-lay cuts in the spool to better help with that (Example, Van Staal.) Me personally I like Braid with a floro leader, especially if I am bucktailing, I like the sensitivity since most takes are on the fall.

    • @ChattCats
      @ChattCats  7 лет назад +2

      I agree in certain cases. I fish below dams right in the turbines, wing walls, spillways, etc. I've had more breaks offs with braid from sharp objects like rocks, concrete walls, bridge pilings, etc. That's why I prefer mono. Of course with mono it will fraid. I like using braid in fishing heavy vegetation and if I"m fishing from the bank to get a longer cast. Thanks for commenting.

  • @jbolin105
    @jbolin105 7 лет назад

    I use 80# power pro with 50# mono leader. I fish alot of pretty rough structure rocks, concrete and wood. On fish the only break offs I have had is the mono leader and on snags 90% of the time I get my sinker back. So I prefer braid.

  • @JohnRidleyFreedom1
    @JohnRidleyFreedom1 7 лет назад +2

    I am definitely a fan of monofilament. Monofilament... especially fishing in current will break a fish down faster than braided line. You have drag coming from the reel and the current will create additional drag on monofilament line in the water. It doesn't work that way with braided line. Braid cuts through current like a scalpel. Go mono!!

  • @marquiasmathis3888

    I just bought the Berkely Fusion spinning reel n rod combo and can hold up to 25lb mono. So my question is this, I wanted to have one rod with braid on it for catfish. So I spooled it with 25lb mustad mono for my backing, then added 65lb power pro braid as the main line. Will this be a useful new method to fish for catfish in small community ponds?

  • @rebelborn811
    @rebelborn811 7 лет назад +2

    I prefer mono I use trilene big game solar green shows up great under black light for night fishing and as for the sensitivity of it that's where the rod it's on can come into play a more sensitive tip on the rod will show the softer bites

    hey for Braided line go on ebay type in 100lb Braided Fishing Line. then you pick any color you can get 500M for $8 and it depend on the brand and color but sometimes it's 300M for $10. it used it this whole year and had no problems even snagging on a rock or something. the rod would most likely break before the line. the best part is its equal to 20lb monofilament so you can spool a Catfish or saltwater reel with a large amount of braid.

    go to Tackle Warehouse and look at braided line it's a lot cheaper getting off the subject I can get a thousand yards of suffix monofilament for $18 they might change the price I need to have a look again yes the price is the same four 12 pound monofilament

  • @OldManCatfishing
    @OldManCatfishing 7 лет назад +5

    I have more hookups with braid. Just shop around and you can find braid at a cheaper price. Plus putting a row of mono on first works as a shock assorber for the reel and stops slippage of your line. Good luck with your fishing. I think actually that you should use what you have confidence in.

    The ez braid is not really a braid at all. Iv been using that for a while and I lost 7 lures in 1 day due to it being weak. The power pro in Walmart has been night and day. I can get caught in thorns, weeds, trees, and lily pads, and still have no frays or breaks.

    Thanks for a very informative video. Like you said it really is a personal preference thing, no right or wrong answers. On baitcaster reels (abu garcias) strictly mono for me. Spinning reels I strictly use braided except for my sauger/walleye set ups. I do put a mono or fluorocarbon leader on when using braid because of it's weakness with abrasion. I mostly fish the Ohio River and braid is more aggravating when it comes to snagging. Again, good stuff.

    I fish mostly from a kayak. I have heard that is a good idea to use a heavier line than you would from a boat. What do you think?

    • @ChattCats
      @ChattCats  7 лет назад

      Just depends what size you fish you are targeting. I typically use 50 lb main line with an 80 lb leader. I typically anchor fish and normally fish in moderate to high flow. The heavier line helps me pull the fish against the fast current.
