Why isn't this a thing in the US? We have road relays, but I have never seen a cross country relay in the US. Yet it is at the world athletics cross country championships. It sounds like it would be fun.
Nah, Hallamshire Harriers is just another Sheffield Team. The two main ones are City of Sheffield and Hallamshire Harriers. There is a Hallam University team as well
Intrigued by the comment XC spikes are just a gimmick and that you use track spikes with Nike pyramid XC spikes. I thought track spikes have a smooth back section so makes it even worse for grip?
The only decent XC spike is the Nike Dragonfly XC but even that has a waterproof upper and no hole at the back. In the UK water is getting in regardless and then that upper just means there's worse drainage

Fully smooth to prevent dirt accumulation, and just the spikes for the needed grip 👍
